Had same problem for over a year. Had crank sensor and map sensor changed today. As soon as I turn key it starts now. Mechanic told me its very common with clios's. Did you ever get problem sorted?
Had the exact same problem man mines was the emboliser in mine has almost gone but when you turn the key push the button at the same time this send the signal and starts it ever time
I've had the exact same problem with 2004 clio II. Sometimes using the spare key works, sometimes wiggling the wires in the upper left corner of the engine and sometimes turning and wiggling the key in keyhole with excessive force.
Annoying as hell when you're in a hurry or far away from home
Yep definitely the TDC sensor as mine's around the same age (2003) & did this.
Fixed the TDC sensor, & went for about 3 days & now it has totally died & won't fire at all. Not the battery as the voltage has been checked but now the wretched thing won't lock, start & the clock has reset.
Never buying another French car, I'm telling you! Second Clio, both with big problems when they're not very old!
solution1: put ur key into the solt with the button faced down. now listen carefully; turn your key to a full ignition point with the button pressed(do not let go of the button) do this quickly. u will hear the cental locking work.
solution 2:leave ur car in ignition, i.e let the red light flash. open ur boint, u will see a white wire wid ablack clip thing connect to the immobilser, take it of and put it back on, then go back into the car and start ur car.
@need4speed102000 Thanks for the help, however this last weekend i took the TDC sensor off (notorious for this issue) and cleaned it slightly, literally just brushed some dirt and what not off with my finger than a piece of cloth, put it back and the car has so far started perfect!!!
@need4speed102000 You may be right or you may be wrong, but when i had the same problem with my clio, (exact same make / model) the little red light in the middle was flashing, meaning the immobiliser is kicking in, on this car i don't see the red light flashing.
@meda638 i called a guy out, who disabled the immobiliser so you won't ever have to worry about the issue again, only thing is you can't use the keyfob to unlock/lock your car :(

That's a common issue in renault 1.2's. I bought a new crankshaft sensor, It's easy to change it.
