For me the soap bars (p90's) on my 56 reissue is the sound I have been searching all my life for. Advice to young guitar payers. Forget buying tons of effects .... All you need is a quality p90 equipped les Paul through a decent valve amp. The sustain and clarity of the tone is awesome.
@CamilleJacob it isn't the strings; it is the pickups; what you hear is the natural P90 pickup's 60 cycle hum. that style pickup was made before humbuckers; humbuckers have 2 coils that essentially eliminate the hum, though not all of it. humbuckers "buck" the hum. thus the name
yes... no. can't believe 60 cycle hum from a p90 is so loud. That hum I hear at the begining is way to loud and seems to come from the fact that gibson cavities where not isolated. But as you touch and untouch the strings nothing changes, that's what makes me say your strings are not grounded....
@CamilleJacob P90s hum varies from the environment. Lightnings and etcs, when i play p90s on stage with high powered lights, the hum is much more significant than playing in my bedroom with one lamp on. So it might be the certain lightning or things around his environment making its hum louder than usual. But its nothing that a noise gate cant take care of
@McScottson I had one; it robbed the tone and made it sound like the guitar was running through a processor. In the end I preferred to have the hum with the natural sound of the guitar.
@JohnnyAce07 interesting, which noise gate did you use if i may ask? I've been using the isp decimator and have fell in love with it like many others have. It got rid of the hum, but the tone still stayed in tack with minimal differences. But i can sure contest to the hum adding to the tone of the p90s, kinda the flavour of this beast that some can people can be in love or hate it.
@MegaBarger Those are P90s. They were Gibson's original solid-body guitar pickup. They switched to the Humbucker (which is still standard today) around 1958/1959. Before then, all their guitars had P90s.
@TokeHuge The 68-72 Gold Tops were re-issues of the 50's Les Pauls so it would still de-value it if he put the humbuckers in. I have a 72 Gold Top Deluxe and I often thought about putting them in mine but even though I'm never going to sell it, I just keep the P90's in. I'm looking for another old Paul with the buckers and I suggest anyone looking for that sound should do the same with a 2nd guitar & leave these the way they came.
@twiggymac Heck no! That is a $25,000 collector guitar, near mint! The P90s sound fine. Page recorded the solo with a Fender Telecaster, similar pickups.
yeah i know. but i am not a fender guy. although, i might get an eric johnson strat. the double neck is too large & heavy & will not hang on my wall. i have another video where i am playing the aged jimmy Page Les Paul which has the push/pull pot in the up position (single coil bridge).
Johnny, Is that 68 all original? Man, where did you get that? That is one of my dream guitars. Forget the 59, I'd rather have yours! She's a REAL beauty! Oh yeah, Nice job on the solo! I'm just extremely envious... nah...jealous!
I envy that guitar.

nice guitar but throw some humbuckers on it. especially if its a 1968.
if it was a 1958, it would be an exception to leave the p90s, but no man.
