she is one of the greats that help to break the racial divide during her career thank you gladys i learned alot about people of color in music during this era it was a great time to be in America
She definitely IS the best singer on the planet, but Eydie Gorme, in her day, was right up there on top too. Of course we also have Celine today. Patti Labelle has quite a range is is great when she's not screaming; ditto Aretha. Chaka doesn't belong in that group at all.
@dhenderson116 You are really telling on yourself to say that Chaka doesn't belong in that group, BUT CELINE does...over CHAKA KHAN????? I think you need to study your Chaka a little more... Try Naughty!!!
Gladys is lovely & has always had a great voice but this nut "Kaalec" arguing that Whitney Houston could not sing in her prime is either tone deaf, insane or one of bobby's baby's mommas consumed with hate. Anyone with even a halfway decent ear must give credit where credit is due regardless of style / taste differences. For example, I am no country fan but the moment I heard Leanne Rimes sing live - I was impressed by her awesome voice. People are born with a voice or not. It cannot be learned!
I never said you werent a professionial or good if u werent famous I said being a professional dosent make you good renee fleming may be a soprano at the met but you cud b a professional wedding singer c the diffeerence n "professions" an thank for reconizing my genious at "17" I may b young but i do know a thing or 2 about vocal production considering i've studied voice for over half my life short as it may b and age is jus a # weather ur a 60 yrs old of 16 if u say whitney screams ur an idiot
@16ondablack Half your life? Really? Wow, I guess I should shut up then because that 81/2 years must be soooo much more valuable than my measly experience. Thank you for the benefit of your many, many, many years of "vocal production". (Do you mean "singing", child?) By the way, you should try taking up English – it's reasonably close to the language in which you attempt to communicate.
I've met this lady twice in my life. 1971 and 2002. At the TP Warner Theater in Washington, DC when I was a radio announcer and in Salt Lake City at the Latter Day Saints Conference Center. I have to say she is my favorite singer of all time.

Gladys is a legend and one of the best soul vocalist ever to walk on Earth but I never thought I'd say this; "She just doesn't have to cords to take this song on and do it justice"
What a magnificent singer. Where are the Gladys Knights, the Arethas, the Etta Jameses, the Koko Taylors, and all the other soectacular female singers of that generation? All we get are either watered down versions, like Beyoncé, or overblown versions like Whitney, or the just plain tacky Mariah.
True but I would say Whitney is one of the old timers to a certain extent. She is known as, if not the best, one of the best female voices in history and made incredible history. I wouldn't say she is a modern substitute for these fabulous ladies.
@dagll Everyone is entitled to like who they like, but to me Whitney yelled her way to the top (and, unfortunately, seems hell-bent on drugging her way to the bottom. I hope she can get clean and stay clean). I know she has tones of fans, I, however, am not, never have been, never will be, one of them.
@Kaalec Of course; everyone is entitled to their view and I similarly wish that ladies like Gladys were widely listened to show us how it is done. I just feel Whitney is more than good enough to be seen in the same light. It's a shame that she isn't what she was but no one can ever take away what she did nor her title the voice. Anyway, I'm so glad I found this live recording; it's fantastic.
@Kaalec Actually if you know music you will know Whitney NEVER yelled, Whitney belted, Yelling is when you sing outside of your comfort zone, Patti and CHristina Aguilera goes into yelling at times, but Whitney never yelled, she belted, and it always sounded great in her prime.
@numonemofan Since I have been a professional musician for 30 years, I think I might have a slight understanding of music. In my opinion, Whitney's belting sounded a lot like yelling. Mind you, whenever she came on the radio, I knew where all the neighbourhood dogs were from their howling (which wasn't nearly as annoying as Ms. Houston's alleged singing).
@Kaalec Oh your a hater and a fool, and definitely not a professional muscian. Whitney was amazing in her prime, what an idiot, clean your ears. With those kinds of comments, we know why your so caled muscian ass is sitting behind your computer commenting on You Tube!
@Kaalec 1st off yelling (screaming) is a technique (not a sound) in which your dependent on your larnex and throat instead of the diaphram fyi Whitney (b4 crack) never screamed also being a professional means you get paid 4 what you do dosent mean your good and it certanly dosnt mean ur qalfied to adjudicate sum1 whitney famous 4 control and tone i hav a feeling ur nt as "professional" as u say which explains y uv been preformn 4 30 yrs and wait who r u again right lol!
@16ondablack Renée Fleming, s soprano at the Metropolitan Opera, described singing as "controlled yelling". But perhaps you've never heard of her, so that wouldn't make her a professional. But then, at 17, you're obviously an expert on the arts and music industry, so the thousands of WORKING musicians around the world are clearly not very good because they're not as famous as Whitebread Houston. Child, why don't you just shut up until you're out of diapers.
@Kaalec WHAT? A musician is NOT a singer and while singing is akin to playing an instrument, the type of instrument that one can only be born with or without, so you obviously prefer instrumentals if you can not hear the beauty of one the greatest vocal instruments of our generation. Go blow your horn and wish God had blessed you with a voice ... you are just another hater. So sad :-(
GOD ITS TRUE HOW ON EARTH DID WE GO FROM THIS TO LADY BLOODY GAGA!!!!!!!!!!! EVEN FROM ORIGIONAL WHITNEY!!! i mean come on Music Industry sort urself out!! xx
@hand2gland You are so right. I know that sometimes these great singers are forced to mime, but at least they can do it live. So many of the singers now mime the entire time to cover up for being shitty singers in the first place. Can you imagine Cheryl Cole even trying to do this song, or even doing anything live? There are others just as bad as her also
@solidboi87 I feel the same way...I've always wanted to meet Gladys..Its one of my dreams..Her voice is pure soul...I would cry like a baby if i met her though...I'd break down i know it
Why couldn't she if she had an older child 15 years old. It happens ALL the time. Her son could have had a baby at 15 yeas old and the baby could be born at the same time that she had a third child. THAT IS NOT IMPOSSIBLE.
Jennifer Holliday is the original singer of this song she sang it in Dreamgirs the musical for 5 years straight and turned it into a pop song recorded it and won a rammy and performs it live to this day like no one else could ever do it (except J. Hud)
being in the industry a word to the wise never repeat what someone else has told you to be true unless you yourself know it is true. No such lawsuit has ever taken place and as much as I love Aretha she can be very stand offish and attitude served up now I am giving facts from personal experience so let's just love them for giving us great voices and great songs!
You must be the biggest dumbass in the history of the world if you don't know of Jennifer Holliday (by now) the ORIGINAL singer of "And I Am Telling You".
Jennifer is the original artist to ever perform this Gladys covered it awesomely I am such a fan, but all credit goes to Jennifer Holiday for being the first one to have recorded the song!
I could really see Gabrielle Union playing her! I thought the same thing for years. The tone of her speaking voice is close to Gladys'. Think about it. Angela Bassett didn't have to sing herself when she played Tina Turner in "What's Love Got to Do With It". Tina did all the singing, so for any parts in the movie where Gabrielle (as Gladys) has to sing, Gladys can just stand behind the camera and sing while Gabrielle mouths the words. Gladys' recordings can be used otherwise.
Interesting...I swear just about everyone has done this song. From Whitney Houston to Sammy Davis Jr. I love Whitney's and Jennifer Hudsons. The original is a killer too.
I remember Aretha stating, in response to Gladys' saying she wishes Aretha and she could have been closer, she gave GK&P a ride in her jet. Also, from Gladys' autobiography, whether real or perceived, she felt Aretha historially snubbed her and was intentionally rude. From Aretha's autobiography, she was very offended by Gladys' repeating things her mother said about Aretha's mother and her abandonment of Aretha prior to her early death.
You know it, and just think, Gladys was hoarse during this concert. And that song is usually a one and out; but she sang "And I Am Telling You" during her extended set.
The lawsuit thing is news to me, so I'm going to research that. But most of my info comes from Gladys' and Aretha's autobiographies. Gladys' came out first and Aretha had some pointed responses to claims in Gladys'.
Gladys doesn't care for Aretha's conceit...Gladys is a very humble and real person, and Aretha really takes that "Queen" nonsense seriously, as demonstrated by her vexation at the Grammies this year with Beyonce over her introduction of Tina Turner. Gladys is as real as it gets in the entertainment industry...Tavis Smiley asked her in an interview when it was that she realized she had truly made it in the business; Gladys's response: "I never did [think of myself in that light]."
Damn, this was good!!! I can't even imagine what she might have done if she hadn't been hoarse! She would have laid the crowd flat on their backs even MORE than she probably did.
DAMN!! I've never heard Gladys sing this b4! I love it!! Since I'm a fan, and own lotssss of her music, I have heard her in her best voice and in a not-so-good voice. She is a bit horse here BUT it's a excellent version!! I would love to hear another version of her singin' this song, puttin' the staaaank on it :) She is just so awesome to me!
WOW!!!!!!!!!! The Empress is putting it down once again! Thanks for sharing...THIS IS WHY SHE'S THE EMPRESS!!!! The slideshow if fantastic by the way!

Empress of Soul Gladys Knight was born in 1944
Kelly was born in 1976, Gladys was 32
Gladys 1st child Jimmy was born in 1961, 15 when Kelly was born,
2nd child Kenya was born in 1962, she 14 and her 3rd child Shanga was born in 1976, so she could not have a grandchild the same age her child. OK!

I love the hoarseness in her voice here it adds to the desperation in the song. The woman is supposed to be broken that the man is trying to leave.

She is a bit horse here BUT it's a excellent version!! I would love to hear another version of her singin' this song, puttin' the staaaank on it :) She is just so awesome to me!
