@arcteryxequipmentinc Hi. I'm new to Arcteryx. I'm looking for equipment set for winter hiking at between -5c ~ -20c. Can you give me some recommendations?
is the atom lt jacket more efficient than the solo jacket? i am searching for a layering piece under the alpha sv. whats the difference between thermatek and coreloft?
@tomstockinger: The Atom LT is designed as a mid-layer, and is not as warm as a Solo Jacket. The Solo is more of a stand-alone jacket (but also a great warm layer under a shell), as it is engineered to deal with precip/moisture better. Thermatek insulation has a very robust loft profile (long lasting loft with repeated compression), and the insulation fibres are DWR treated. That means water will not be absorbed into the fibres and it can dry very fast. Depends on activity levels.
Trying to decide between the Atom LT and the Atom SV. I'm planning on the Atom underneath a shell, most likely the Venta SV Jacket. My guess is that the Atom SV might be a bit excessive as a mid layer? I'd be snowboarding in mainly -15c to 5c weather.
I purchased an Arceryx hardshell at the end of last season and now I would need a warm midlayer. Is the Atom LT the best option? I would be skiing mostly in the Canadian north east and the occasionnal trip out west or to Europe. Will I be fine with Atom LT (midlayer) + Beta AR (hardshell) if the temp is windy and -30C ?
@mediteranno Skiing at -30c...you're tougher than me! The Atom LT is a fleece substitute mid-layer, which means it is the same warmth/breathability as a mid-range fleece- only more versatile because it blocks more wind than a fleece. If you are lift-skiing @ -30c, at a minimum you'll need a good warm base layer under the Atom as well. Backcountry use is different as you are working harder for most of the day. The Atom LT is super versatile, but not considered a "maximum warmth" layer. ^SM
@arcteryxequipmentinc Obviously I wont be skiing at -30 too often, just wanted to know if Atom LT was good enough for worst case scenario because sometimes it could get really windy on the chairlift. Which midlayer would you recommend for really cold skiing days or better yet which arteryx midlayer is the warmest?
how come arcteryx doesnt do a down jacket.. i had to get a North Face down liner/jacket when i was looking for more insulation in a midlayer... there really isnt any substitute for down.
@JogBird There are many situations when you don't want a down jacket. If your back gets sweaty when you're climbing with a backpack or backpacking in cold conditions, and the down gets wet, you're going to be a lot colder when you should be celebrating on the summit. Of course there are environments where nothing but down will be good enough (8,000m peaks). Why doesn't arc'teryx make down for situations when you need down? Couldn't tell you.
@JogBird - @recon455 got it right, down is great in certain situations, but you can't beat advanced synthetics when you are dealing with moisture (precipitation or sweat). We design our products for active use in bad conditions, and we know though experience that a dry body is a warm body. I can (unofficially) tell you that we have played with down over the years, but have not incorporated it into our product line. Check out our DUALLY BELAY PARKA: warm, breathable, compressible, & hydrophobic.
@arcteryxequipmentinc i already have 3 arcteryx shells and a bunch of mid-layers.. i just wanted a down midlayer for when im not that active, and not another insulated shell or that dually which is way too bulky (huge advantage of down is insulation/weight ratio). sure it may go against your philosophy, but theres a market for high quality, down midlayers
@JogBird Down has a high insulation:weight ratio? How about ThermaTek? Twice, if not three times as much, heat retention p/oz than down. You'll find this insulation LAMINATED (meaning reduced weight because of no stitching baffles) to the face fabrics of Arcteryx's Dually Belay Parka (which - by the way- isn't bulky, or heavy and stuffs down to a scarily small size in your pack) and Fission SL, an amazing, lightweight, low-bulk, waterproof WARM jacket.
@JogBird ... Synthetics really are the way forward, regardless of the condition; Coreloft, Primaloft and ThermaTek outperform respective Down fills in every scenario, be it wet, dry, warm or cold. And the whole point Arcteryx use them is because they reduce the weight and bulk of every insulated jacket whilst still providing the heat retention (and BREATHABILITY during exercise) that Down could never offer at the same weight/warmth.
@uknowwho889 down is unbeatable when you just want to stay warm.. ie. like when im walking into work in the middle of winter. if im out xc skiing of course i wouldnt use a down liner/jacket. in terms of bulk of down, the tnf down liner i have is incredibly light, compresses and is compact, so no issues for me.
also, merino wool is unbeatable as a nts layer, which is used in the rho line whereas some synthetic is used in the lower phase line.
@JogBird The reason natural fibres are used in BL design is because of their NTS comfort properties, but the Phasic range isn't 'lower' than the Rho, it's purely more output based. Down IS beatable when it comes to warmth; your TNF liner might compress well and keep you warm, but claiming there is '[no] substitute for down' - especially when Arc'teryx are designing the most accurately constructed, durable and efficient garments on offer nowadays with synthetic insulation - is a touch ignorant.
is it good for 0 degree Celsius in windy condition?

Which is better...purple or blue? I can't decide...the yellow trim round the hood kinda ruins the purple for me, the blue with purple lining is dope.
