I to did an engine swap to my rx7, love the car hate the power train. So I chose the 2jz engine, that will make me good power and get decent gas mileage.
Are u running an electric of mechanical fan? Putting 1 in my 1st gen right now and well, I will be having a hell of a time with the build but it will be well worth it.
I dont mean to be a dick about this, but that car is built with a rotary engine. it's unique because of that. Putting a v8 in it kind of ruins the authenticity of the car :)
mines 2600 lbs with me in it after the swap, got the car for 500 bucks due to a blown rotary and just so happens my friend had a 350 4 sale and my uncle built me a 700r4 for free so thats how my swap came to be.
As someone who has owned an 88' rx7 with a rotary engine I would swap that pos rotary engine out for a 350 anyday. Fuck the rotary engine only made 162 hp and like 130 ft pounds of torque. Lol that 350 is probably putting out 350hp and 350 pounds of torque.
i am doing the same thing only mine did not come with a motor and maybe he did not just wont to go around corners fast or anything and it is his car he can do what he wants
and all of your comments are going to make him pull it out and out a rotarie in, arnt they? bith engines have their reps. i think one person should be able to choose what they do to their car. it's not like your going to be driving it.
a 1.3L rotary has the same performance of a 4L v8 but the rotary will pump out alot more power and 10 times more fun with a fat turbo boost rather tan a big v8. nobody would ever ruin a RX model in australia by putting that big piece of shit under the bonnet
First of all this is America, 2nd of all my "big" V8 only weighs slightly more than the rotary motor I removed because it was ruined with a whopping 90,000 miles on it and with less than 5k into the project I'm making about 400 horse NA so excuse me for insulting the Australian RX pride but i'm just trying to exercise some fiscal common sense and make some power, so go wrestle a crocodile or something and keep your assanine comments to yourself
"First of all this is America,.." after this sentence i stopped reading because i knew where this was going. so with that said, after you quit being so ignorant and realize that this is only the United States because America runs from canada all the way down to chili. Also, just got done installing another 13b bridgeported, easily 400 hp NA, so get your facts straight, quit being ignorant, and your comments might get brought into consideration.
Jported 13b's MAYBE make 400CRANK hp. No way you are making 400 with a bridgeport. Hell I have a dom carbed 12A with a big bridge, and only makes 280whp. You Have no idea what your talking about. This is coming from a person who owns a rx7 that runs 5.8 in the 1/8th.
@stevestick1 Don't worry about him mate, we're not all rice burning wankers over here. Great conversion. You've solved the problem of making a rotary sound like a real mans' engine. Now I want to build one for meself!
@thegoodguy001 Yeah I think you forget to mention that the rotary sucks at making torque. That 350 will easily speed ahead of a rotary with the right gears.
@thegoodguy001 Rotaries get shitty mpg for the hp they make and there's no torque to speak of. An OHV V8 will go 150000 miles with minimal maintenance and OHV V8's tend to weigh about the same as the 1.3 turbo, so the whole big power from a small engine point is moot. There's virtually no reason to stick with the rotary.
congrats, another lazy bum that doesn't wanna learn about rotaries, instead they take the easy way out..."hell the only damn way to fix it is to put a 350 in it"-redneck mechanic when i first got my Rx-7
i never said they were good...they are GREAT... haha, but the way i see it is why take the rotary out? you're killing the whole point of the car, if you want something light to put a v8 in why not get a fucking metro or something that doesn't have a rotary.
well said. only rednecks don't understand the true power of rotaries, and they never will. "If you are unsure of something, you will hate it. Even though it may be better then what you think is better. Change is scary yes? But change is sometimes good" That's what I think they are thinking. Just cuz it wasn't thought up by an American, they dispise it. "Rotary engines have only 3 rotating parts." Compare that to a 4cyl. V6 or V8. Now count the many ways they can break..
This IMPORT, is now defiled by that engine. What are RX7's worldly known for? Now take that away and what do you get? Take the rotary out of it and it just turned into a POS RX7. Even a pure RX7 with a lightly tuned rotary engine can keep up with it, if not bet it like nothing. Small and powerful those engines can be, just in the right hands.
Nice sleeper, don't worry about the rice rocket haters. Did you do the conversion yourself? How long did it take you? And what kind of motor specs and transmission did you use? 0-60 times? And what's it do in a quarter mile? Was it a stickshift or auto before the conversion? Thx
i have a T5 right now but would much prefer a T56 but there a little more spendy, i still am going to buy one, hopefully this winter i am able to find something reasonably priced
yeah thats true, the 13b's are crapy engines anyway. youll be lucky if you make it to 100k miles before the seals wear down. 12a's arent the most powerful but they more relieable, ive seen them go to nearly 300k and still running strong.
i understand its instant power for little money but still...it deserves a rotary, its not really an RX-7 at this point...more like a px-7. it not just a v8 that makes the heat rise about a 7, its any piston engine, the rotary is a concept/inovation over pistons.
this is actually the 4th rx i've owned and the previous 3 all blew up before they reached 130,000 i realize that the rotary engine is innovative and capable of making a lot of power however my pockets aren't that deep switching to a reliable cheaper chevy engine with pistons gives me more power for less money and it was fun i don't mean to undermine mazda or the rotary concept i was simply more interested in the conversion
it's easier and cheaper to do it to an RX7 and i have a limited budget i'm a senior at the university of north dakota and money is very tight also the mazda car was given to me, So i'm into the whole project right now for only about 3500 dollars
i have footage from start to finish i build the motor in my basement while stripping the car in my garage i'm new to this whole you tube thing but like and to answer your question i will be posting vids about the build

how difficult was it to drop that small block v8, into that tiny engine bay?

Maybe someone should take a Cutlass and put one or two or seven rotaries under the hood. That would be... annoying.
