The squid attacked the light or you? They go for shiny stuff. They have chemoreceptors in the arms to detect what is or isnt food. They grab stuff and if it is not food they let go.
@azuloceano Apparently he attacked the light and I would have just been collateral damage. These squid are huge and nothing to play games with.
I do however, realize that the squid are not looking for a human meal to chow down on and most stories are just exaggerated fisherman tales of the squid dragging people to the depths etc. I shoule have been more careful since I was in their domain.
nice vid! my gf is an underwater videographer (so i've seen more than my fair share) and we're thinking of heading to la paz in the next coupled of years. the manta/seal shot is absolutely mindblasting! :)
holly molly! this is awesome man... I am a fan of diving and I would love to have some recommendations from you on where to see all this, please!! I would appreciated so much
Hola Elayas! Those images were taken during many dives in various diving seasons in the Sea of Cortez where I live. Most of it was in the area of La Paz, baja california. The dive season is from May to November, different things can be seen at diferent times. Animals like Orcas are difficult. Others are easier, like sealions, whalesharks, fish and the night dive stuff. If there is something specific you would like to see, contact me at azuloceano@yahoo.com, may be I could advice you!
Thank you!!!! You might have a different year this time. It is a La Nina year and conditions are different. We have been having a lot of Mobulas around these last months. I dont know how it is going in the other areas. Im now in Pulmo and the conditions are not yet on summer time. Octover should be great!
Well, it is a Sea that has been overrun by fishermen. They have taken care to empty what before was a very rich sea. Amont the things they have eradicated, are sharks. Sharks eat humboldts. No sharks, too many squids. But they are abundant in certain areas only. They are amazing, interesting beautiful animals. I have dove with them (I have a video of them here) and they are not the dangerous beast people think they are. Sea of Cortez is still amazing though.
Where exactly did you shoot all of that? We are planning a trip in April from La Paz to around Aqua Verde - if you have suggested dive locations I would appreciate you sharing them.
Yea... a lot of quality gets lost when the videos get transformed for downliading here. But at least people get an idea of what images I have and of what can be seen here. Most of that anyway was done in DV. Most of those images I got years ago. I see you dove in the Revillas! I need to get myself some more footage there!
We were just there in La Paz and Loreto etc. Great video and I like the way you connected the music. Really great artistry. I have one question. Between 1.38-1.40 of the movie there is a "day of the dead character" in the background of all the sea creatures wiggling about ... did you insert that or was that actually there. Thanks for a great video. Dave
Hahahaha! I was so worried about that day of the dead caracter! I was wondering if someone had added something to my video! In fact that is a diver there. She was there looking at all those worms. I guess the quality of the video is so low when put in Youtube that it can not be seen very well that it is a real diver!
Sorry for the delay answering, but I had limited internet access for a while! I live by the shores of the Sea of Cortez, so I have done more than a 1000 dives here! The images you saw in the video were taken in various years and in different places. This sea is amazing, very rich, very generous!
The one shitting??? It looks amazing! I had to use that image! Hahahaha! Or if you ask about the Mobulas? THey are here in Winter in a place caller cabo pulmo, but somtimes can see them here in La Paz
It's an opinion "Templekids" had on a public forum, r-e-l-a-x. You may not agree, in fact I can't say that I do even, but I'm not gonna piss on his wheaties just to show my Manly Superiority and how Witty I am. Go back to your cave :-)
Genial!. loved the music that matches for sure the excitement that is diving here at the Sea of Cortez, always a surprise to discover!. Loved your piece on Humboldt squids! one of the first I have seen that talk about their not so agressive behavior.
Great image quality, precision on editing as well!!.
I didn't need to watch this for long before I knew this had to be one of yours .Yes!Another five star + all the way .I could watch this every day and not get bored .
Thank you for your comment! Those manta rays in schools, they are mobulas, a smaller species than the giant mantas. Sometimes you can see thousands swimming toguether. It is a very beautiful sight.
Had the Japanese not fished it out 50 years ago, there'd be a lot more fish.

@mwb78 Indeed. But now the Mexicans are the ones wiping out the life of this Sea.

I damn near lost my life when I encountered a humbolt squid in sea of Cortez, luckily I was able to escape with my camera light broken.
