Listen, first off I am actually a big fan of the books and as such I'm not sure any movie would ever do the series justice. Or rather, shall we say that the world is still not ready to see the books brought to life as they were intended to be visualised.
As for this movie, I enjoyed it on it's own merits. I watched it, didn't find myself reaching for the remote after the first 10mins and got to the end feeling I hadn't entirely wasted my time.

Watched the first 15 minutes of this on Netflix out of curiosity. Beyond terrible. Whoever sold these people the rights to do this should be beaten. When i read that they were making this movie i was psyched. I had read the story as a kid and still remember it clearly. I read the books as a kid. About the only things I remember was that Dejah went around naked all the time and the green guys had six arms. So right in the trailer they've already got everything I recall wrong.

Did you actually read the book this is based on? Everything you mention is in the book. I have not seen the movie yet, but I doubt that I will be too disappointed with it like you are. You may not have liked the movie version of the "lord of the Rings" trilogy too. Unless you use total animation, there is only so much you can show on screen when dealing with characters and creatures so different from real-life.
There's a better movie for this coming out, with better actors and better visuals. Yes I have read the book, actually I've read almost all of the barsoom series books. And for that matter, looking at the trailer, they haven't followed the story. The woman I assume is supposed to be Princess Dejah Thoris. She was never held captive by other martian humans in the first book. And the Tharks in this don't even look like the Tharks. Don't give me limitations bull crud. Look at Hellboy.

This is not a trailer for the new movie... this is a straight to video thing made back in the 90s (I think) that is currently on the shelf at Blockbuster... I would not rent it, cause it looks terrible... B ut i look forward to the new one... (me n my kids are reading the John Carter series right now... I had not read them for maybe 25 years...

When i read that they were making this movie i was psyched. I had read the story as a kid and still remember it clearly. Now having seen the trailor i sit in disbelief at how they have ruined such an amazing story. Still, Im sure ill see the film when it comes out just to see just how bad they destroyed it.

I read the books as a kid. About the only things I remember was that Dejah went around naked all the time and the green guys had six arms. So right in the trailer they've already got everything I recall wrong.

I think even Asylum forgot its sales gimmic; trick people into watching the movie by having a similar title and cover art in a video store. This seems like they were contractually obligated to do a rippoff and realized "shit, we can't fake this"

I have been a life-long fan of the John Carter of Mars series. It should be against the law to crucify someone's work this way. I'm sure they did the best they could with the budget they had, but damn.
Dejah Thoris, although very old by Earth standards, is still very young by Mar's standards. She also has black hair. Jeez. At least they could have gotten that right.
Traci Lords is still a good looking woman, but this was not the part for her.

The best part of the trilogy that forms the first three books of the series is that they are all naked. Dejah is BUTT ASS NAKED. All the characters are BUTT ASS NAKED. John Carter is running around with his penis in everyone's face. Dejah's got her tits bouncing around. Is this in THIS film? Noooooh-ooooooo. Is this in the DISNEY version? Nooooooh-oooooo. Did you actually read the book this is based on? Everything you mention is in the book. I have not seen the movie yet, but I doubt that I will be too disappointed with it like you are. You may not have liked the movie version of the "lord of the Rings" trilogy too. Unless you use total animation, there is only so much you can show on screen when dealing with characters and creatures so different from real-life.

There's a better movie for this coming out, with better actors and better visuals. Yes I have read the book, actually I've read almost all of the barsoom series books. And for that matter, looking at the trailer, they haven't followed the story. The woman I assume is supposed to be Princess Dejah Thoris. She was never held captive by other martian humans in the first book. And the Tharks in this don't even look like the Tharks. Don't give me limitations bull crud. Look at Hellboy.

In all the rush to get a better version out, they seem to have forgotten something. "Princess of Mars" started the Barsoom series not "John Carter of Mars." "John Carter of Mars" was the final installment of the series. This is almost like when the James Bond series was started with "Dr. No."
