It should be understood as:
1. Every one is going to die, wheather kaffir, murtad, mushrik, munafiq or mu'min.
2. When dead they live a live called "barzak".
3. There are a opinion that say that the shuhadah live in green birds in paradise. Have no more info about this thing yet. But As Allah said in the Quran that they can not hear you and even if they could they can not help youp you.

There is a difference between someone who is Shaheed and someone who is dead. Ali was a Shaheed. If The Quran is to be taken as literally as The wahabbis take it, without room for metaphore, then Allah has hands, a face and eyes. 2. the dead are in a state of barzakh. This is both the kuffar and the beliver's state when dead.
3. No dead can hear you, see you or know about you. Ali do not know you even exist let then hear your DUA or see you doing sujood for him.
