Happy to say I went to see them pretty much every opportunity that occured, even had the chance of hanging out with them, very nice guys, not self centered in any rock hipster kind of way.
I'm forming a math rock/post rock band with an awesome drummer. I play mathy-tappy-psychey guitar and sing. We need another mathy guitarist and a female singer. Listen to examples by searching for 'The Still Lives' on myspace and reverbnation
If SLINT and SHELLAC got together and had a kid (and ate junk food and smoked pot while pregos) it would be a beautiful bouncing June of 44. Sweet video! "On this day... Ive lost (angry great white shot) FFFAAAAAAAACCCCCCCCCCCCCE!"-nice. P.S. Slint concert=probably the greatest experience of my life.
I think a lot of the bands who were originally labeled 'math rock', like Slint and Chavez, were just good indie rock bands. They experimented with time sigs a few times per album, but honestly, I think a lot of fans just wanted to sound cool by claiming to listen to math rock. There is some metric playfulness in this song, but it's not like Don Cab or anything. Zazen Boys is a good japanese band, they experiment with meter a lot, depending on the song.
this is such a beautiful song! hey, pls check out our band, we are still on the process of figuring the right tune for creating our own ambient music.. just type, "jam experiment video file 3 (feb 2, 2010)" .. you can also check our past videos on my account.. leave a comment, thanks!
The best part is at around 6:20 when it gets fast and all the people are thrashing around in the water. The video fits well with the audio at that point.
Great song. Great vid. Do me a favor and send this to every "emo" band that is currently sucking kids into a fashion statement. Fall Out Boy...you are first on the list....
@MuleSkinner01 i like the evens but i just cant get into it sometimes. its too nice and kind. its hard to listen to ian when he's not yellin in passion. long live fugazi, lond live june of 44,.
@cliquehop I challange you to listen to their lyrics. I won't win anything on their demographic, bass player, record company suckupness and willingness to endorse anything. I will however say for "pop" music the lyrics are quite good and the music plays off quite well the themes. Disclamer: I share this profile with my siblings, the favorites list was not made by me.
Nice video, thanks for uploading!

June of 44 was tight as hell. Post Big Black, Polvo ~ Pre - Isis Harkonen Hydra Head stuff that now defines Math Rock.

Ghik1987 1 year ago
This was on an EP shaped like a matchbook. Even the vinyl packaging. It was called Sharks and Sailors.
blacklevanter 1 year ago
@blacklevanter nah, I'm pretty sure it was called Anatomy of Sharks. Still a great EP though.
macklemoreosis 1 year ago
I can't help but bring up the distinct lack of sailors in this video. The song is clearly not entitled "Sharks and Seals." I came anyways

If you like this, make sure to check out Rodan's album "Rusty." Great stuff. It was the guitarist's first band. Dig that Louisville scene!

I love how the arguements on this video are way more civilized than say a metal video.

Umm, Slint? hehe, Slint and June of '44 were sort of label mates. Slint on Touch and Go, J'o'44 on Quarterstick.

@cliquehop Actually, Meshuggah formed in 1987, and June of 44 formed in 1994. Not being a smartass, I just love both bands x)

As much as I agree with your assessment of Fall Out Boy, June of '44 isn't emo.
Send the kids some Rites of Spring or Sunny Day or something :P

Correct, they're Math Rock. They are way too complex to be any form of 'core' as that refers to hardcore punk and it's multitude of sub-genres.
Ian MacKaye quote on 'Emocore'
It's "the stupidest fucking thing Ive ever heard in my entire life."
God I love Ian! Everyone check out 'The Evens'
