African countries don't need "good leaders" to become free and prosperous, they need to be recolonized by whites or the Chinese. Sub-Saharan Africa is poor because black Africans possess little human capital and the production process there is labor-intensive. They have universities in Africa that teach engineering, medicine, and economics, but for some reason, Africans seem unable to apply it. Vietnam was colonized by France and waging a war not too long ago, and they seem to be doing fine.

If you've read the book, then read Michael Levin's rebuttal of it. Diamond doesn't show that the conditions necessary for a civilization to flourish (domesticable animals, arable land, etc) are also sufficient for a civilization of the kind Europeans created to flourish.
