Just a tip for ya brother. The only need for raising a slurry on a synthetic stone is to increase cutting speed. Synthetics usually cut pretty fast without a slurry. If you do use one however, finish with clear water and you'll get a keener edge. Abrasive slurry particles are pushed down the stone in front of your cutting edge in a wave. This swarf washes against the cutting edge and to a small degree actually abrades the edge. You'll really be able to tell if you ever start sharpening razors.
could i do this with a partially serrated blade? it is smooth from the tip to aout halfway down, then it is serrated. it holds an edge extremely well. if you have time than thank you for answering my question.
Also u have ceramic which cuts a little slower than diamond, don't know how it compares to water stones. But u can get the best edge with waterstones, better than ceramic.
when you buy new stones in the future use a peice off of the old 1000 stone for a slurry on the 6000..no need to buy a nagura stone..waste of money. The only thing the nagura stone is used for is to create a slurry to cut the steel faster.
Why do you sharpen from the tip to the heal one side and then heal to the tip the other direction. Sharpen the exact same way both sides you'll render a much stronger and sharper edge.. But hey to each his own if that works for you good job.
LOL you can't check for burrs with all that grit on the edge my young padawan
i have a waterstone (not japenease, just a double sided waterstone) and are you supposed to soak in water befoe you use it? if so howlong do you soak it for? aswell can you tell me the different types of blade (convex etc) i tried to sharpen my knife earlier and it did nothing to make it sharper so im wonndering was i sharpening it the wrong way for that type of edge?
@cianw10 Yes, you do soak them. Soak them for around ten minutes. For most waterstones bubbles will rise from the stone when being soaked. Wait till the bubbles stop and it is ready. For different types of blades i dont know so much. Just find the angle and sharpen.
@cianw10 Convex edges are a bit are to sharpen.Check out Murray Carter sharpening them or use some sand paper on a mouse pad or on a flexable surfice.

You are soooooooooo awesome !
Just an FYI:
Waterstones above 3000 grit have been known to disolve if left in water too long.
