@NauticalDisaster I'm positive that I've put more time into fixing linux than I have ever put into fixing MSDOS all the way through 7, including 95. Linux is far from stable. When people say that it is 'stable' they boast about their "uptime". But hey! That's what linux is "all about". I agree that it's a great concept, and I used to love linux and being a part of the community. I was a part of the Fedora Dev team btw, as a packager and bug tester. I just want something that works now.
@wslx0195 I agree. Windows just works. Linux works if you want to take the time to make it work. They really need an extremely user friendly Linux distro with an extremely well designed GUI. Ubuntu is a nice first step, but it's far from achieving that goal.
@pcgod8 Funny. The other day I installed windows 7 and it didn't "just work". I had to hunt down a bunch of drivers, configure the sound, and do a bunch of stuff just to get it to do more than what it did "out of the box"; that being opening internet exploder with transparent title bars. That's all you may need, but many others need more. It takes time and work to get windows to work.
@xyzoneon I have news for you, every operating system requires drivers. If the drivers aren't included with the OS or downloaded automatically, you're going to have to hunt them down. This is as true for Linux as it is for Windows. It's even true for OS X, but mostly only if you're installing it on non-apple hardware.
@pcgod8 Your reply doesn't refute the invalidity of the notion that "windows just works" which you made.
And of course linux has drivers, but they are included by default the vast majority of the time, so what's your point?., If not they're either some kind of winhack which suck anyway, or they're experimental drivers under development and typically will arrive by default in time. The point is linux strives to contain every usable driver possible, while in windows it's 3rd party driver chaos..
@RetroShinigami yes I know "wine" very well, but it can´t run that and many others games....but I could instal even ofiice 2003 and I have been trying to run chessmaster 11th I had no success. (chessmaste 10th it´s ok on wine)

Hmmm... You guys still using the terminal? Time to let go. Yes Linux is getting better, hot chick, but users are all working way too hard to make an OS work for them. The terminal's been around for over 27 years, but seems it's to be the flea Linux can't shake. I thought computers were made to make our lives easier? I'm no Mac fan, but I get why they're extra creative - more damn time, less terminal. Oh yeah, Ubuntu's 8.04 LT outs today, think there will be any typing? Can I get a "Hell yeah!"
In Xubuntu 8.04, I could if I wanted do everything I needed to do (other than running physics simulations in ROOT, but most people don't need to do that) without opening a terminal window once. Download and install software through Synaptic, and it's automatically added to the menu. I actually do most of my work through the terminal, though - it can be considerably faster if you know what you're doing, and you don't have to switch between mouse and keyboard.
The terminal is something you'll miss when you actually learn to use it.. For a desktop user just looking to browse the web, read e-mail and play a game of solitaire, it's pretty much useless. For a coder or systems administrator working with a huge network, it's an invaluable tool.
Just because you don't need a CLI for starting up Counter-Strike in Windows (or whatever you kids today play), doesn't mean it's antiquated or in need of dumpage. Shit, even Windows Server has a CLI as a Feature...
@ortlikasealion the terminal is what makes linux awesome, it saves time, and it allows you to communicate complicated commands to your computer in a much better way, most people need to realize that just because it is text based does not mean it isn't a thousand times better than the more gui based operating systems, you can't judge a book by its cover
@ortlikasealion YES. Exactly. I don't need to say more about what you said because this is well put! I'm sick of using a modern linux OS and having to use the terminal to do anything lower level. It's not "difficult" or "tidius" but it's annoying to know that after all these years, FOSS developers can't spend a little more time and effort making more complete GUIs so that the user can spend less time working with the OS, and more time working on their projects.
@wslx0195 get a modern distribution. and if you think you know what it takes to make it better, you can join the development team. we make linux together, and if you think there's something wrong than you can help us by fixing it! that's what opensource is all about isn't it?
@ortlikasealion In my opinion, Terminal is easier. I mean, which of the following is faster? 1. Open Terminal. 2. Type in "sudo apt-get install name". 3. Type in your password. 4. Wait for 15 seconds. Or: 1. Open Ubuntu Software Centre. 2. Search for "Name". 3. Double-click it. 4. Click install. 5. Type in your password. 6. Wait for 3 minutes.
@ortlikasealion The terminal is necessary. But you technically can install Ubuntu and install all of the software you need through Synaptic and never have to even look at a terminal (unless you elect to click that little arrow while it's installing the packages (to show you Apt, working)).
@ortlikasealion Embrace the Terminal! After so long, it is still Linux's most powerful tool. Why shun it because it is intimidating? Once you are familiar with it, it can be faster than any GUI.
It's quite pretty, but really the reason I like it most is because it uses quite a bit less resources than GNOME or KDE. My laptop was a bit clunky running GNOME, so I switched to xfce for my desktop environment and it runs like a dream.
nice, ill give it a try :D i think ill like it cuz im all about performance, not to much about GUI or eyecandy, and u said it looks good 2, so i will try it :)...and thax for da info
