@Supergungun I wouldn't call it rock either. Rock and roll maybe, but not Rock. Original rock and roll pretty much came to an end when the Beatles had their first hit here. I'm talking Little Richard, Eddie Cochran, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, etc. "Rock" hit the scene sometime in the 70's and had a much harder edge than the original stuff. The "innocence" was gone and in came Kiss, Alice Cooper, and that cheeseball who bit the heads off of bats supposedly.

However, "payola" started back in the 30's and early (original) rock and roll was still being played well after the scandal in the late 50's and early 60's. At any rate, The Shirelles were probably the best of all the girl groups back then. At least I thought so, and I'm actually from that era. (I just don't understand how I got so old so fast!)
