Who`s the doll playing keyboards, making like she`s trying to squat on a sybian machine? No offence meant? I just thought she looked rather fetching!What-what!?
Anyone remember JJ's appearance on a Sat morning ITV kid's show with Steve Jones (?) from The Pyramid Game?
I think JJ was promoting the single. All I remember was him climbing up the studio wall and they went to a break. Not sure if it was a set up or not but it was exciting to watch. Shame it's not on youtube.
@NUCLASH Blimey, you're the 1st person I've come across in 30 odd years who saw that too! I was 12 at the time and vaguely remember the show. Steve Jones had a record player next to his chair and would play the track then review it. In this case I remember him slating it and then JJ jumped down from a wall in the studio and their was mention that JJ was a black belt at which point, if it wasn't a set up, a smell of fear should've entered the studio from Mr Jones' vicinity!
Remember everything about this song/album/video. John Ellis is in the video but Brian James played on the track and all the guitar on 'Euroman Cometh'
got this album on vinyl in 79, never new he had made a video to it . saw him at manchester apollo on the euroman tour, he took his triumph on stage and almost choked us to death with the fumes!!! . sat in on the soundcheck with him, great friendly guy. thanks a lot for posting.
I like JJB, and this song, but never knwo its lyric. could you please add it into this informatioin? (English translated) . I just up loaded "Triumph".
Still one of my favourite videos...... I noticed a while ago there was a debate about the colour of JJ's bass. The official name from Fender is Antigua Green.

The best may i say when it came to using the bass as a lead, notice jj has the euro stars on before any of us saw it on number plates, the man's a phenomena.
hi,im bassist and i like this video and this song,is 1 of my favorit,i want this bass tabs, some one please tell me where or how can i get that bass tabs, thanks
WOOOW!!! THAAANNKS!!! This song and video literally blew me away the first time I saw it, back in 1981 or so. It is really great to watch it again after all these years. Influential.
This green bass was the one JJ bought from Hugh Cornwell fo £35. It had a unique sound until he karate chopped it at the Paradiso Club, and it splintered into pieces. It was repaired and still gets used, but has lost its sonic qualities that made that sound so special in the first albums.
I so want to say that it went straight in at number 1 and stayed there for ten weeks. I'd also like to say that it has been used in the soundtrack of nearly every Hugh Grant film. However I don't think that anyone is gonna buy that. It got a lot of airplay on my Dad's stereo if that counts, ha-ha. I must get the album again...
There aint avf been some clever bastards,I was working in Parsons green i kept seeing this strange looking fellow wondering around I later found out it was Norman watt Roy LOL.
I was told by his neighbour he's a really nice bloke and like's a smoke shame I never got the chance to talk to him, another great british bassist.
Shuker I don't know them I always thought he played a Steinburg cricket bat bass,I started on a fretless Honer copie like the steinburg it was all right till it got soaked.
Reasons to Be Cheerfull: The night I met him he was working with Wilko Johnson and they both signed my copy of 'Laughter'. Turns out that Wilko used to share a house with JJ back in the day. Small world, innit? The Shuker connection is recent. I read the name in a YouTube comment under a Stranglers vid. Looked it up online as it was all news to me. I had the fretted version of the Hohner. Great sound and playability, but it was so lightwieght that it felt like a toy. Wish I still had it though!
This is JJ Burnel (bass & vocal) from The Stranglers doing his first solo project. The track is taken from an LP called Euroman Cometh which was released in about '78/79. The lead guitarist is John Ellis who was in a punk band called The Vibrators at the time. He toured with Burnel when the album was released and then joined The Stranglers as a second guitarist, initially for live work only. When Hugh left he stuck around for a few more years and then left too.
No worries. I'm old enough (sadly) to remember this stuff as it happened. If my wife sends me to the shop I need to write a list, but ask me who played bass on some obscure new wave track from way back and I'll more than likely know. Yeah it seems that The Stranglers now sound like The Stranglers again; And why not they're bloody good at it!
the vocals need major work? didnt freddie laker actually put the blockers on the vocals? hence the printed vocals on the video (which was also banned i think) that`s what the whole song was about? concorde and boeing and Mr Laker and loads of tax payers money and where is concorde now? just been de-comissioned after making some bastards billions in profits ....nice one!!!... i always thought it looked ugly & stupid anyway...and it scared all the cows in India....bastards!!
What are you talking about concorde is amazing, who give's a shit about India when cow has higher ranking than a child,oh I need to make some money iv got an idea ILL chop my childs hand off that'll do the trick, they are scum like CFC.
Is that the official Fender name for that colour? I have never seen another one like it. I know he bought it from Hugh for £35! It's a shame he doesn't use the Fenders anymore, but when you consider how many people took up the bass cos of him and yet he's never been offered a signature model (and some of the people who have?!?!).
Iv no idea I don't even know where I got it from'would they call it Avocado in America,Don't they call it Eggplant there?
Your point about the signature model is right he's a great bassist I noticed there's loads of models of players I never even heard of country players I imagine lol.
I was into the drums as a kid until I heard Jean's bass and thought what is that cool.
PS if fender were to make as signature model it would be shit I feel I was ripped off with my A.S.Jazz Bass a lot of hype.
The only reference to the colour I've read was either JJ or Hugh calling it 'green sunburst'. I know Fender did a lot of custom colours back in the 60's so perhaps it's a one-off special order.
With me it was the guitar first and then bass after hearing Rattus. Great era for bass: Burnel; Foxton; Bruce Thomas; Barry Adamson. I love how they all decided to play lead, but lower, haha. Currently putting a Black & Maple P-Bass together out of custom parts. Guess who inspired that....
Im into the J bass these days I have a 75 I defretted and a piece of crap Califoria corona standard J bass,id never buy a new American made fender again badley build.
You made the right choice making your own bass
im sure it'll end up being better than a factory mass produced new one.
I took the scratch plate mine its shocking with exposed wiring a hole and a huge great channel routed out from the knobs to the pickups I was cutted.
What you've got there is one of the Mexican built Fenders: the basses (P and J) all have that style of routing cos they're built to a price and that's the cheapest way of doing the wiring. If you get an actual USA built Fender the quality is much better, but you do have to pay more for it. No sorry mate your wrong my Jazz bass is a California corona factory built Fender made in the USA.Its also supposed to be the American standard with through the bady strings, delux machine heads and reinforced graphite neck.
I bought the bass while I was on holiday in New york so you can imagine I was thinking WTF when I took the scratch plate off if id bought it in London i would of returned it back to the shop.A lot hype around Fender these days and whats with the custom shop bollocks,MusicMan
Wow, really? I'm disappointed to hear that. I'd only ever seen the MIM stuff routed like that. Most of the USA stuff I'd seen lately looked okay, but thanks for the warning! Both my Fenders are Jap ones from the 90's so the quality is excellent. My custom (when assembled!)has an Allparts Maple Jazz neck (I prefer the nut width on a Jazz), a WD black alder body and Hipshot aluminium tuners. I managed to get an 'F' stamped neckplate , but I'm still deciding what pickup to get.
You should get a Jazz pickup for the bridge and a P bass pickup in its normal place the best of both worlds plus a mixed tone of the two, coool, smokin, the early single pot controls are supposed to be better than the stack pots, you'll need a volume control for each pickup.
I imagine you'll be able to get 4 or 5 differnt tones I can get 4 on my J bass.
It take's much longer to get up morth the slow way Ian Dury..LOL a brass nuts helps the sound 2.
Knock me down wiv a feaver, Clevor Trever! I met Norman Watt-Roy when we played at the same venue a few years back. I held his Shoreline Gold Jazz while he tweaked the amp we were both gonna use (not at the same time obviously!). Funnily enough my main bass is a Precision with P-J pickups fitted. I rather like bone nuts myself, but still thinking on that. You could always buy the JJ Burnel Custom Shuker Bass! Stick Shukerguitars into Google for a look.
You gotta love Jean!
