Ok, it makes sense that the interface would be slow while you're uploading a file (these things are designed to use as much resources as they can to file transfers). I'm betting it's not that slow when you're NOT copying to the NAS.
@ivojvodicp try assigning a static IP, attach the NAS to your PC using a crossover cable. The only thing that will limit your speed writing to the NAS will be hard drive speed (either your PCs or the NAS, whichever is slower).
Thanks for posting this. You probably saved me a big headache. I'm thinking I might just take the other commentor's advice and build a cheap LINUX box and configure it for RAID1. Sure it will be a little more expensive and 25x the setup time, but should be worth the effort in stability.
just like KGPDK said set up your shit right and you wont have a problem. Im getting a good 22- 25MBps and 12-15MBps and im very happy. Now on my mediasmart server I get a whopping 85-95 MBps burst thru gigabit. So toss your mac and get a real computer ;) BTW I own 2 of these. if you dont want yours hit me up :D
i just bought this thing and tested it out alot.....
Me sending to the BA110... 26mb/s AVERAGE with 4gb files on cables 1gbit...... Whats holding back here is my laptops harddisc which cant go faster than this .....
Getting files from the NAS is the same story.....
With wireless to the BA110(thru router) i get about 10mb/sec :)
So...set up your shit right, and it works beautifully....
Also just wondering what did you use to record/edit the video because I like that blur effect and I just want to know the name of the recording/editing program since I use a lot.
Thanks for this man, I wasn't considering to buy since I don't have the money in the first place since I blew it on other things lol, but anyways I won;t be buying their shitty products ever plus there tech support is retarded as fuck from what I heard im not trying to be racist or anything but god get some damn American in their Support line or something because everyone their is ignoring us so they don't deserve to get our money. Well what ever fuck them and their stupid piece of shit products
Everyone has this problem, the speeds are stupidly slow, customer support is poor, and they blame my end...
It has a gigabit ethernet, gigabit? Like that would ever get used...
FTP access has now failed too, so i have to send it off. They said I will probably lose all my data. This is awful because most of it is priceless. I hope people read this comment and watch this video before they buy so they don't make the same mistake as I did. Please please make a micro atx server yourself, i wish i did
You might want to have a look at Seagate's forums. One member finally enabled SSH access and open source firmware might be on the horizon. I haven't had to use my BlackArmor in months, so I haven't been following the progress like before.
But yeah -- I bought a PC sans monitor or optical drive a while ago for probably $150. Slap as many HDs as you want in it and install Linux and save yourself some frustration, plus you'll have a torrent box and a web server.
@bobcurwen24 NAS are made to work in a gigabit LAN. At work I've a Seagate BlackArmor 220 with a gigabit LAN and it's very fast. I've tried with a 10/100 lan and it's slow as hell.
With gigabit NAS speed is similar to an USB drive.
I also use it in FTP mode with dyndns and it's fast.
Hi mate. Are you accessing the drive wirelessly? Have you found any firmware updates yet?
My company just purchased the same device and i am more than happy with it. It doesn't get hot like my WD MyBook and it performs better. Our admin GUI doesn't load slow like that, it's pretty instant. I have full ssh and ftp access enabled with no problems. In fact, only issue i had was without installing the discovery software, It would refuse a connection from Vista. But to be fair, so would i. ;)
I'm using it for c. one month and my one (BA NAS 110 1TB) work very well and fast. The only issue is (rare) changing of some filenames from "long name" to "short mismatch of letters". But generally - I'm happy with it as it consumes less energy than PC and is more quiet.
if you want fast nas, better pay up for it. those $200 ones are designed for home users, if you want performance, those Qnap raided nas boxes are the way to go. many of them offer over 40Mbyte read and write speeds.
You're right.. I have 2 laptops (XP and Windows 7), and it is taking me 2 days to copy an external 320 GB disk to the NAS 2 TB (directly attached) and I'm not done. Transference rate is a real disaster, I am considering returning it. I was aware before I bought it that it had big MINUS and big PLUS and I decided to take the risk.
The software that is supposed to make it easy to install does not work. It makes things more complicated. The guides are also poor.
@ivojvodicp LOL. You'll really love it when you open the logfile and find out many files didn't actually copy because the rsync script bugs out over certain characters and sequences of characters. You'll also enjoy knowing that it is incapable of doing incremental backups, so if it took you 2 days to back it up the first time, it will take you 2 days to back it up the week after. Also, the logfile never deletes itself -- or at least mine doesn't; it is just appended over and over . . .
@qahtani What NAS do you recommend? I only need FTP capabilities, torrent capabilities might be nice :) and to keep family pictures safe from any it-disaster.
@ivojvodicp Build your own Micro ATX computer. I You can then run Linux on it and run any server software you want, run bit torrent, apache, and as for a file server, you have endless possibilities. With a seagate nas, you're just stuck with what ever firmware they give you, which is crap...
@ivojvodicp I agree qahtani.... a cheap PC is best, depending on whether you want to RAID or not will define what kind of second hand PC you need, but overall, other than having just one (or two) external HDD whether it's Seagate or WD, most cheaper NAS boxes just don't seem to do what they say. I set up a HP rack server with FreeNAS with a total of 1.2 Tb RAID 5 storage ... works a charm. Not saying everyone has to do it but with FreeNAS ... was soooo easy. Using a PC would be a piece of cake.
I also have problems with BlackArmor Nas 220. I have no problem streaming hd movies (10gb) through my computer to my ps3. but if I try to stream one mp3 file from my BlackArmor it is so very slow and a movie - dont even think about it..
Not a particularly thorough review -- and I have a healthy disdain for mac people, deservedly so. Did you by chance, test this a Win machine? And, why do you think a NAS has a chauvinism for an OS? Did you CALL seagate? I am particularly interested in seeing their GUI, however, Im not entirely thrown off by a single persons dissatisfaction. And the first file (on linux transfer) seemed to work swimmingly.
I too disdain MAC users. Still, we have this product at work and it's a complete piece of junk. And no, I've not called Seagate, I don't call tech support, there's a reason those people work tech support, if they knew anything, they'd be doing my job.
what do you think about network-adapters to connect a normal harddrive to a network? they cost about 30€ (here in germany)...i'm considering buying one.
your work on a mac thats make problems xD
