Unfortunately, communists don't make for free anything y only the gov't has anything good...It's a tragedy...so sad.
@bobcyra. Just out of curiosity, were you a US citizen living there in '46-47? I think the embargo is a harsh reality which doesn't make life there easy for many. It is an excuse for some things but the reality is that with the collapse of the USSR and the embargo Cuba became royally screwed. I agree with the top comment. You don't see homeless people. FIDEL HAS KILLED CUBANS WITH BULLETS AND HUNGER< HE HAS STOLEN THEIR RIGHTS AND HAS KILLED ANY HOPE OF FREEDOM... those who believe the contrary are LIARS AND HYPOCRITS.
@elizabethfaraone and I have not said that american presidents havent killed lots of people with bullets and hunger, but the fact that someone kills four people and another one kills one doesnt mean either of them is morally correct... just think about it for a sec. ;)
To all you assholes...if Batista had kept on ruling, all these places would have been torn down and modern casinos and bars from the wealthy mafia would have taken over the whole country. There would be prostitutes and hookers in the streets instead of children. Go screw yourselves if you don't believe me. It would be a bastard playground for the very rich white Americans today. America's bitch. Think about it.
@203207ab@203207ab ONLY THAT STREETS ARE ALREADY FILLED WITH HOOKERS, and there are no casinos, but hotels for tourists or that tourists only can afford plague the country. Also, I think you have ignored the fact that fidel castro's mafia is far larger than batistas. and although I agree with the fact that the U.S. has abused other countries since its emergence as a world superpower you MUST ADMIT, as a sane and knowledgeable person, that the castro dictatorship has done no good
Well actually today in the Communist Island, with the perfect ,there are planty of prostitutes/jineteras and hookers in all havana,if you didnt know,ASSHOLE
@203207ab so to keep hookers and casinos out of the area, which as i far as i know there is no evidence of such a move as you claim batista wanted to do, the entire country and the entire population should suffer like they do now???
as far as ur racists statement about whites, well it is NOW the playground for RICH WHITE EUROPEANS
@203207ab So basically now Cuba is screwed over by left wing assholes, 50 years ago Cuba was being screwed over by right wing assholes. Either way Cubans are still being screwed
@203207ab 100 % right brother, even though there are prostitutes today in cuba like in no other place, it would be fucked up to have a government like batista he was way worst than fidel, but i dont like cuba with a communist government, both were assholes. But i like your comment it is very true what you say
@203207ab Modern casinos, bars etc create workplaces. No matter who runs them. Maybe if Batista kept on ruling Havana would have become another Las Vegas not a shithole that it is. What's better? Rich tourists coming to visit expensive casinos, restaurants and spend a lot of money or kids starving on the streets and poverty all around? Think about it.
@UnforgivableMen They dont starve your capitalist swine. People in Cuba enjoy TRUE freedom, there are food, clothes, free health care and university for all.
@squathacker They were starving at the time of batista. There is a saying in Cuba.."In South America there are 30 Million homeless children...None of them are Cuban".
@203207ab You're an idiot. To say this is insulting to all Cubans. Cuban people were the economy, not Batista--THEY were a proud people who were industrious and thrived under Batita's benevolent dictatorship. Why? Because Cubans were smart and not lazy--they were given capitalistic tools under which to operate and from this came the undisputed fact that in 1959 the Cuban peso was equal to the American dollar--Cuba was no one's B####! Now it is a different story.
@203207ab Absolutely 100% agree with you. The problem is that the wealthy Cubans who fled were wealthy on the backs of the peasants and feared reprisals. Now they long for the good ol days much like a white supremacist longing for the good ol days of 1940, and try to convince everyone here how great it would be if not for Castro.
And the US is headed slowly to the same fate when 98% of the wealth of the US is in the hands of 2% of the pop.
@zenbrenzz thank you for your comments. Also, Cuba has taken great efforts to make literacy for everyone almost to 100 percent and health care for women having babies as a top priority. They are now equal to that of the United States in babies surviving childbirth and above any south american country. Even better than Haiti and the Dominican Republic nearby which is supposedly free but full of corruption as well. If for nothing else, that is a great accomplishment in Cuba in its own right.
@203207ab My opinion of this comment is Insulting to someone who lived under the system in Cuba, like me i was born there. All of these are lies, i dont know how can you people believe Fidels lies, godd i lived there i could tell you how everything works, i go every few months and visit my family. Everyone wants to leave the country a %98. Please if you dont know about how it works stop contaminating other peoples mind with your lies and Castros lies.
Wow this used to be my old neighborhood. It is a ghost of its former glory. Even the proud ceibas have withered away. Guess the Holy One decreed water was to scarce for them. Crumbling historical buildings... makes me sad.
this is the havana of 50 years ago, fuck all the communists, people there have no rights and cant have anything emprisoned in their own country, only rich tourists are allowed to come, becase the corrupted government likes the money
At least is a peaceful country with children playiong in the street here in Ca;lifornia you go to the street you find drogs, gang member and criminals
It still looks wealthy to me. This isn't compton or watts or detroit in the usa. Wealth is judgemental. To you it may look poor or inadequate or ugly. It looks just fine to me pal. You also have small kids playing in the middle of a busy pedestrian walkway...playing baseball. In America you would see them walking in the malls or lying around their asses looking at a computer screen while eating a big fat mcd's hamburger and very greasy french fries with a sugary coke soda or fat milkshake.
@203207ab When I was young, my mother always said we were "rich in love." That is true wealth. Unfortunately, I know of no country that is rich in love, but you'll find examples of love everywhere. I love Havana, New York, Rome, Tulum and so many other places and you can find fault with every place. But I do find it difficult living in the US, knowing its destructive historical and present behavior.
If it wasn't for the revolution...this place would be one big casino full of prostitutes for rich American tourists. There would be a kfc and Mcd's burger joints on every corner and people hawking silverware and drugs like the do in every other country when an american goes to visit and spend their money.
Poor thing! You don't know what you're talking about. The old areas have always been untouchable because of their history. They are in the U.N. registry of historical places. Furthermore, now, people hawk their bodies and drugs. which is worse than silverware and drugs. I know, I still have relatives there and I have visited. I want to set the record straight without getting angry because I'm sure you have been planted to diseminate propaganda. You're not worth it.
The old buildings have only been placed on the "protection" list by the UN recently. I'm not here to argue...but had batista stayed in power...i'm sure a lot of these old places would have been torn down or turned into McD's restaurants with the influx of money from the U.S. had they continued their close relations at that time. I'm not here to argue. We have a difference of opinion. I live in los angeles...this place looks clean and crime free to me. i don't see any graffiti either.
@203207ab I have family over in Havana and I also live in los angeles. One thing that really struck me was the fact that there are NO homeless people there. Everyone has a roof over their head and has secure food. I'm sorry to say, but in los angeles it makes me sad that my people here are starving and sleeping on the streets while the rich oligarchs and politicians decide to invade other countries and kill innocent women and children with our tax money. Cuba does not squander their money.
@203207ab And, unfortunately, when Cuba had to encourage tourism, prostitution was present once again, as predators flew in from all over the world to have "sex" with the beautiful young men and women who were struggling to survive. I'll never forget sitting on the beach in 1998 with a friend and we were surrounding by beautiful young women (prostitutes). My friend was very sad because he they had been his schoolmates.
all people around the world aim for quality of life. fortunately, quality of life cannot be secured by money. you have to have good dance, good music, good books, good exercise, good health, etc., to have a good life. i wish to visit cuba one day. viva de la revolucion cubano!
You're right but the human race isn't advanced enough yet to make Karl Marx's dream a reality, communism is the highest & final stage of development, the human race is not even half way there, in a Marxist society everyone must govern themselves, the entire human race has to be 100% self sufficient, until man improves we still need leaders & government & laws.
Batista was the evil dictator that Castro overthrew, Batista was an executioner, a puppet for organized crime & gambling, when Castro took over he drove all the gangster's out of Cuba & took all the money from the organization & casino's & funded heathcare, education, housing & transportation, Castro decentralized by 1970 & helped numerous 3rd world nations in Africa, Cuban life was improved from 55 to 85%, until Russia collapsed, Batista was the monster not Castro, LONG LIVE THE REVOLUTION ! !
Communism is a great political ideology, but what I hate is how people like Fidel take advantage of that idea and become authoritarian. That is not what Karl Marx wanted.
You are the biggest ignorant on this forum. This is exactly the bullshit that Fidel fed me in Cuba. After I came to the US and had access to free press and reviewed Cuban figures pre-1959 is exactly the oposite. Go dig for a little info and you'll be surprized.
Rublor, before Castro Cuba was a Republic. It had a Constitution, laws, civil rights, a President, a Congress and law courts. Cuba had a large middle class. Cuba had the third highest per capita income in the Americas exceeded only by the US and Argentina and acccording to the US Commerce Department Cuba was the most heavily capitalized country in Latin America. Was Cuba before the Revolution a country without problems? Of course not but the average Cuban had a better life then than now.
jajjajaj another stupid american! IT IS VERY OLD,my friend, Cuba has a place called GUANAJANI which is the first place where Cristobal Colon (called Christopher Columbus by ignorants)landed when they discovered America (called The Americas by ignorants)well a little bit of history wouldn't make you bad.
ive been there last christmass.. people there are extremely friendly depite teir poverty... LUV the streets, the buildings ...i wanna GO THERE AGAIN...
America needs to lift this pointless embargo on Cuba and let them join the 21st century. Fidel is out of power, and now they're just suffering because their economy is in the toilet since they can't trade.
@agentfazexx They can trade with any country other than the US. They could get Toyotas and Hyundais and VWs. Why can't they? Because they don't produce anything except cigars and sugar, so they don't have anything to trade. Why can't they produce anything? Because they are not free. Why aren't they free? Because they don't have capitalism. Liberty, freedom, and private property rights are the solution to the human condition. Until they have these three things, they'll always be frozen in time.
@pete5668 You're an idiot. Plenty of countries don't have that, and the USA trades with them. Look up the Cuban Revolution, and what Castro did, that's why. But this was almost 60 years ago. There are no political interests in Cuba, and the USA is VERY conservative, that's why they're not doing shit.
And FYI, the USA fines anyone who trades with Cuba.
@agentfazexx agree. But no unless they American government still believe the Mob is good business and want its stupid casinos back. American governemt is a bunch of cry baby bowing to a bunch of terrorists in Miami. America will not lift the embargo as long as they bow to a bunch of cry babies like the Miami Exile Community and Hillary Clinton the biggest cry baby of them all.
@agentfazexx If you love it there why dont you go live in that nasty Socialism. Cant you see that system does not work anywhere. By the way did you take that course in college called English, i think you skipped that class, you dont make much sense.
@agentfazexx Whatever you say Mr. Jew. By the way too bad your socialism cant get to govern the greatest country in the world. And yes i support nazies rather than a FAILURE= SOCIALISM.
I have been to Cuba 6 times...Love the street action...gave Nikons and Hi8 to 4 young men...12-22years and let them document their own world...wonderful experience...Cuba is a generation ahead of the US in biodiversity and permaculture applications...changing rapidly herself...thanks for the post...
Peruana: You know why Cuba its better then most latin american countries because thats how the Cuban Culture is we have selfsteam,we like to better ourselves we like to exceed in everything we do BUT keep this in mind is not because of the Murder Castro cause its probably what you were thinking, before Castro we still had 1000's of doctors we had professional sports and the cuban money was ahead of the dollar n everybody wanted to live in cuba!
those idiots that think that Cuba is better now AFTER CASTRO than BC, are full of it!... or were born after 1959, when CUBA WAS FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!, and not under the clws of the CASTRO BROTHERS with the help of thje other idiot now dead!!! Yes, the one with his picture on the t-shirts.
its true it looks like a city that has been under the sea for 50 years. but it is still so beautiful. i hope those old buildings will be rescued and remodeled one day to their past glory. As far as the people outside in the streets... thats the way it has always been. just notice that 98% of the city is what it has been for more than 50 years. the only difference now is that the habaneros have no future and the culture of ignorance and awkwardness has prevailed along and after 50 years
I agree the ruin is a misfortune yet simultaneously a beauty. And the restricted media access has forced socialization obviously from this scene. People are more likely to get up and go out it seems. There's more a sense of community atleast on this street but I don't know it all so I can't say much. But maybe we're the ones that need to be freed from the bondage of our living rooms and chairs.
Can you imagine a free Cuba? This city is beautiful and is in ruins, imagine those avenues with new buildings, light, beautiful gardens and happy people enjoying a gorgeous and special country? It is going to happen, I know that it's going to happen, Cuba will be free and happy!
Maybe U should compare B4 and after the revolution. I think it was B4 the rev, about half the people didn't have water or education. Most people were incredibly poor, the beautiful gardens were for the rich people, and multinationals were ripping off Cuba for all they could get. I'm not saying that Cuba is perfect - the system leaves a lot 2 B desired and needs some (more left wing) changes. But its better than capitalism. e.g. everyone gets a minimum ration of food under Castro.
U wouldn't be talking like that if U were starving. Guess what's becoming a staple food in nearby Haiti (still a US satellite like Cuba used to be)? Mudcakes. There's no food so they eat mud. If U think that minimum rations of food R irrelevant, try eating just mudcakes 4 a week. I'm guessing its not fun
I'm Haitian and all i can say is YOU SIR IS FULL OF SHIT. I dont care who u r there's no way somebody can survive by eating mudcakes. Few of us eat it not outta hunger but CRAVE,its a crave thing, theres only much u can eat, maybe a quater size.... Stop being blinded by the media, FOOL
5) Yeltsin came to power by a power struggle at the top. Ironically done by really hardline Stalinists who thought Gorbachev was too right-wing. So not exactly inevitable
6) Crucially, E. Europe and USSR wasn't true communism. Neither is Cuba, but its much closer to it than USSR. The wealth differential in USSR was obscene. Worse than most capitalist countries.
Even so, interesting that in a poll over half of Russians wanted USSR system back; it was better than present rip-off oligarchy system. Many people in former USSR are poorer now than B4. In E. Germany, Die Linke (Left Party) is now the largest party
Political freedom is good and it will come to Cuba but it is not all. It's possible to have political freedom and still be opressed by the economic system, like in capitalism. Capitalistic economy may work because it appeals to mans primitive instintcts, but it is also a robbery system where the few exploits the many, it is a licence for the richs to steal the poor. Working man in a capitalistic system is not much more than a slave without a certain master, he has many, including the government.
I lived in La Habana in 1945 and 1946..near the corner or Calle "L" y Avenida 21, cerca del Hotel Nacional and Capri. It was a different world. Some things were good...but the poor needed a lot of help y Batista didn't provide. La Concha was wonderful as were all of the Big Five Clubs.

203207ab 2 years ago 71
@203207ab @203207ab ONLY THAT STREETS ARE ALREADY FILLED WITH HOOKERS, and there are no casinos, but hotels for tourists or that tourists only can afford plague the country.

People in Cuba enjoy TRUE freedom, there are food, clothes, free health care and university for all.
squathacker 1 year ago
@squathacker They were starving at the time of batista. There is a saying in Cuba.."In South America there are 30 Million homeless children...None of them are Cuban".
THESTAFFIECHANNEL 1 year ago
@203207ab You're an idiot. To say this is insulting to all Cubans. Cuban people were the economy, not Batista--THEY were a proud people who were industrious and thrived under Batita's benevolent dictatorship. Why? Because Cubans were smart and not lazy--they were given capitalistic tools under which to operate and from this came the undisputed fact that in 1959 the Cuban peso was equal to the American dollar--Cuba was no one's B####! Now it is a different story.
MCHAMMA416 1 year ago
@203207ab Now is FIDEL'S BITCH!
osdiel 1 year ago
@203207ab Absolutely 100% agree with you. The problem is that the wealthy Cubans who fled were wealthy on the backs of the peasants and feared reprisals. Now they long for the good ol days much like a white supremacist longing for the good ol days of 1940, and try to convince everyone here how great it would be if not for Castro.
And the US is headed slowly to the same fate when 98% of the wealth of the US is in the hands of 2% of the pop.
zenbrenzz 7 months ago
@zenbrenzz thank you for your comments. Also, Cuba has taken great efforts to make literacy for everyone almost to 100 percent and health care for women having babies as a top priority. They are now equal to that of the United States in babies surviving childbirth and above any south american country. Even better than Haiti and the Dominican Republic nearby which is supposedly free but full of corruption as well. If for nothing else, that is a great accomplishment in Cuba in its own right.

You're not worth it.
marquesadepr 2 years ago
The old buildings have only been placed on the "protection" list by the UN recently. I'm not here to argue...but had batista stayed in power...i'm sure a lot of these old places would have been torn down or turned into McD's restaurants with the influx of money from the U.S. had they continued their close relations at that time. I'm not here to argue. We have a difference of opinion. I live in los angeles...this place looks clean and crime free to me. i don't see any graffiti either.
203207ab 2 years ago
@203207ab I have family over in Havana and I also live in los angeles. One thing that really struck me was the fact that there are NO homeless people there. Everyone has a roof over their head and has secure food. I'm sorry to say, but in los angeles it makes me sad that my people here are starving and sleeping on the streets while the rich oligarchs and politicians decide to invade other countries and kill innocent women and children with our tax money. Cuba does not squander their money.
briavila113 1 year ago 14
@203207ab And, unfortunately, when Cuba had to encourage tourism, prostitution was present once again, as predators flew in from all over the world to have "sex" with the beautiful young men and women who were struggling to survive. I'll never forget sitting on the beach in 1998 with a friend and we were surrounding by beautiful young women (prostitutes). My friend was very sad because he they had been his schoolmates.

America needs to lift this pointless embargo on Cuba and let them join the 21st century. Fidel is out of power, and now they're just suffering because their economy is in the toilet since they can't trade.
agentfazexx 3 years ago 29
@agentfazexx They can trade with any country other than the US. They could get Toyotas and Hyundais and VWs. Why can't they? Because they don't produce anything except cigars and sugar, so they don't have anything to trade. Why can't they produce anything? Because they are not free. Why aren't they free? Because they don't have capitalism. Liberty, freedom, and private property rights are the solution to the human condition. Until they have these three things, they'll always be frozen in time.
pete5668 1 year ago
@pete5668 You're an idiot. Plenty of countries don't have that, and the USA trades with them. Look up the Cuban Revolution, and what Castro did, that's why. But this was almost 60 years ago. There are no political interests in Cuba, and the USA is VERY conservative, that's why they're not doing shit.
And FYI, the USA fines anyone who trades with Cuba.

its true it looks like a city that has been under the sea for 50 years. but it is still so beautiful. i hope those old buildings will be rescued and remodeled one day to their past glory. As far as the people outside in the streets... thats the way it has always been. just notice that 98% of the city is what it has been for more than 50 years. the only difference now is that the habaneros have no future and the culture of ignorance and awkwardness has prevailed along and after 50 years
aloanaloan 3 years ago
I agree the ruin is a misfortune yet simultaneously a beauty. And the restricted media access has forced socialization obviously from this scene. People are more likely to get up and go out it seems. There's more a sense of community atleast on this street but I don't know it all so I can't say much. But maybe we're the ones that need to be freed from the bondage of our living rooms and chairs.

But its better than capitalism. e.g. everyone gets a minimum ration of food under Castro.
left888 3 years ago
"everyone gets a minimum ration of food under Castro" (left888) Fucking WOW!
carol2334 3 years ago
U wouldn't be talking like that if U were starving. Guess what's becoming a staple food in nearby Haiti (still a US satellite like Cuba used to be)? Mudcakes. There's no food so they eat mud. If U think that minimum rations of food R irrelevant, try eating just mudcakes 4 a week. I'm guessing its not fun

left888 3 years ago
tell me wy in ussr and all east europe comunist countries, comunism dissapeared...?
mirage1956 3 years ago
Many reasons. I've only got time to do a few of them.
1) The USSR had economic collapse and didn't have the momentum to hold the thing together.
2) Some of Gorbachev's reforms were reforms in the wrong direction and made things worse
3) The USSR split up according to nationalities. There was so much tension, it split up. Whereas Cuba is truly united against US imperialism
4) E. European system was much worse and more oppressive. Nothing along the lines of the Gulags
left888 3 years ago
5) Yeltsin came to power by a power struggle at the top. Ironically done by really hardline Stalinists who thought Gorbachev was too right-wing. So not exactly inevitable
6) Crucially, E. Europe and USSR wasn't true communism. Neither is Cuba, but its much closer to it than USSR. The wealth differential in USSR was obscene. Worse than most capitalist countries.
left888 3 years ago
Even so, interesting that in a poll over half of Russians wanted USSR system back; it was better than present rip-off oligarchy system. Many people in former USSR are poorer now than B4. In E. Germany, Die Linke (Left Party) is now the largest party
Not at all clear cut.
