  • Also, no need to reverse the hidden partition steps to re hide the pqservice partition, cause after the recovery it puts everything back to factory stasus, with it hidden again!

  • I used meathod 1 and could not find it in the pqservice partition in windows. Tried #2, and it worked. There was no tools directory. The file aimdrs.dat was in acer in sda1. Saw the password and this let me access the eRecovery partion and restore computer. In windows I did a search for all ,dat files and it never showed. What confuses me is why is that file only visable in a Linux environment? It was created on Windows. Anyways, thanks for your help!

  • it says ''special device /dev/hda1 does not exist '' HELP PLEASE

  • Im sorry i cannot find Linux CD on that site anywhere

  • I agree, worked like a charm, password was exactly where it said it would be. I knew nothing about this stuff and I still managed to figure it out. I used Slax btw to create the Linux bootable CD and as i type my Acer is recovering...thank you so much for the help!!

  • hey man!! i have a hp laptop but i lost my password , and i want to do my recovery

cd's, can you help me? Thnx!!!

  • i downloaded the slax thing on a cd

when i boot it up to tha cd some other things come up

    theres not pure text interface

  • Cool

  • Works perfectly on Aspire 2920.

Run Slax in full graphics (suggested below by "thefunshack")

Go to Menu then Find Files and Folders

Enter aimdrs.dat as your file but CHANGE search location to file:/

Double click on the resulting file and there is your Hint and Password.

    Thanks to all, especially Thefunshack.

  • HELP ME!!! Please i recovered it just before i did that i had wifi but now the pc says my internet card is broken i can still get internet on the "Connect to a internet" List but i can't connect to it

  • Thanks for the help, the tip is working !

But just think about replacing "vfat" by "ntfs", and change the number after "sda" ( or "hda" ).

  • hey, this is useless info if someone can already access the BIOS to run setup. how about something for those who can't access bios or setup to boot cd! jackass.

  • i used method 1 with Partedit32 thing step by step but in the command prompt i cannot find the file aimdrs.dat, i tryed to type "Copy aimdrs.dat C:" but this file dont seems to exist to me. any help?

  • Used this to recover my wife's Acer laptop. Much appreciated!

  • @thefunshack thanks bro you are right. and thanks to britec as well.

  • im using acer aspire5610 btw

  • @britec09 pls help me why it say when i type cat /tools/aimdrs.dat no such file or directory :(

  • didn't work for me so DID THIS INSTEAD

ran Slax 6.1.2 in VESA graphics mode

when loaded, hit the start button (a letter k over a cog) then find files and folders,

type 'aimdrs.dat' and CHANGE SEARCH LOCATION TO file:/

when found double click the file and your password is displayed as PD=XXXX (where XXXX is your password)

seemed easier and less fuss than command prompt which as this video is now outdated, doesn't run as described here.

  • @thefunshack this is by far the easiest method, takes a few seconds, have used this on numerous gemstone models etc easy as

  • @thefunshack thanks this worked for me an aspire 5630

  • cat /tools/aimdrs.dat

does not work, instead use: cat /mnt/acer/aimdrs.dat

    thank you britec09!

  • britec09<<-------what if i cant boot from cd becoz i also forgot my bios password???

  • Iv got an aspire 4920 with vista.

iv tried this method, and a method from "eHow". Both methods seem to work up to the point where the "aimdrs.dat" file is accessed, at which point both methods say that the file does not exist..... any ideas how to get round this??

    big thanks

  • thank you that was very helpful

  • No need for the pure text interface...

I just let slax boot up, clicked on Adminstration, then Tools, then Find File. I typed in aimdrs.dat and slax found it in about 5 seconds.

    Outstanding!

  • i cant find this pure text interface where the hell is that?

  • I was beginning to think i'd never get to find my password. at first i was unable to mount the drive but slax seemed to have already mounted it. the drive was set to /sda1 and the file i needed access to was in the root not the tools directory.
