This is why I don't watch the news hardly ever, because... all they show is NEGATIVE stuff. Maybe they would show positive stuff if people only tuned in to watch the positive things. We control what they air by our ratings given to them by watching their show, just having it on and not watching even...
What it boils down to is interacting with the world in productive ways. Wasting time on TV or on the computer or anything really is just either hurting yourself or it's feeding the pockets of somebody exploiting you (like the news people or the company selling you their 'service' or 'product').
Everything exploits. We exploit the earth. We exploit plants and animals. We can't prevent it. But we need to figure out where the exploiting crosses the line and rapes our humanity.
About 5 weeks ago i decided to stop watching/reading local, national and international news altogether, i advise everyone to do the same as i never felt so good in my head, i don't feel guilty about the past or feel worried about the future, i only care about the PRESENT nowadays! News are sadomasochistic in pure nature and the media/governement use them for their own agenda!
@QUANTUMBIPOLAR feels good don't it? I stopped watching TV all together about 8 years ago more or less, about 4 years ago I got married and managed to get my wife and her daughter to stop. we get our news from the internet as well as the rest of our entertainment.

Due to the fact that the internet has replaced real socialism (which requires policing) with cyber socialism, perhaps it does need something to compensate. To clarify, I'm not talking about the CIA reading your e-mail and unconstitutional shit like that, but the internet should be policed in the way you would be subject to policing if you were doing something illegal off the net.
I don't think getting rid of the television has to be the answer. It doesn't have to be all or nothing. I think as long as you understand the effect that television can have and remain conscious of that fact, you can still enjoy it from time to time but not let it brainwash you. Everything in moderation.

But a huge portion of the human species lives in dire poverty. I think, according to the UN stats, one person dies of starvation or malnutrition roughly every second. To see those magazines, you'd think American women only cared about five things -- food, dieting, clothes, sex, & failed Hollywood romances. I call their focus the Pentagon Pinnacle of Dullness.
I enjoy shopping at Raisin Rack, a local health food store. The magazines in their check-out line are soul food! Ideas, spirituality, health, nature, & love.

But what the case with this is, is to bring A presence(live in the present moment)in everything you do.
For example: You go to Haïti to save and help these people. You bring them food and save them from death. At the time you do that, it's better to stay present, to bring peace in what you do. Then your peaceful from the inside and people can feel that.
Then you don't just help them on an external level(hunger, roof above there head)but also from A internal level so the speak. If you live in the moment, your peaceful from the inside and people can feel that.
Spirituality is not telling you what to do(it's no religion, it's A teaching). Spirituality is all about living in the moment and making consciouss(non judgemental)decisions. Am I going to Haïti or not? Am I going to react to that person, or not?
Watching the news is doing as much against the bad things in the world as not watching them. But a person who is not consuming the media (and is thus not unconsciously exposed to propaganda) will be more happy, grateful, serene and loving. And a more happy, grateful, serene and loving person will do more against the bad things in the world. This is our all responsibility.

What it boils down to is interacting with the world in productive ways. Wasting time on TV or on the computer or anything really is just either hurting yourself or it's feeding the pockets of somebody exploiting you (like the news people or the company selling you their 'service' or 'product').
Everything exploits. We exploit the earth. We exploit plants and animals. We can't prevent it. But we need to figure out where the exploiting crosses the line and rapes our humanity.

The mainstream media is not representative because it's controlled by the same people who own everything else on this planet, and those people are selfish, beyond wealth, and only care for increasing their own power.. they want people to be in conflict or feel like the world is fucked because that keeps people distracted from realizing they're being fucked every day by a system that is owned by a small handful of powerful men! Mainstream media is just hypnotism..

Funny thing is that when I canceled my satellite (didnt do cable), the provider asked what they could to do keep us. Told her it wasnt them and when the networks and other execs start putting out quality we would come back. She totally understood. LOL

i understand what you are saying, but you can't save the world by going to these horrific places and see what happened and then try to help them. Because you might help A hundred people, but you will never help the entire world. You can only do that when you first make your own life better and show the rest of the world that the only way you can create world peace. Is if you first help yourself and make A better life for yourself. If we do that, then the rest of the world will follow.

I see what you mean, many people who don't understand this fully yet make the same misinterpretation.(I did that too)
But what the case with this is, is to bring A presence(live in the present moment)in everything you do.
For example: You go to Haïti to save and help these people. You bring them food and save them from death. At the time you do that, it's better to stay present, to bring peace in what you do. Then your peaceful from the inside and people can feel that.

Spirituality is not telling you what to do(it's no religion, it's A teaching). Spirituality is all about living in the moment and making consciouss(non judgemental)decisions. Am I going to Haïti or not? Am I going to react to that person, or not?
Spirituality gives you free will.

I think you want to misunderstand...
Watching the news is doing as much against the bad things in the world as not watching them. But a person who is not consuming the media (and is thus not unconsciously exposed to propaganda) will be more happy, grateful, serene and loving. And a more happy, grateful, serene and loving person will do more against the bad things in the world. This is our all responsibility.
