  • i dont see the point i n worring about what other think HEMArtist are doing. isnt functionality all the matters.

  • Okay, this is a nice knot....but then again, why the hell training with a gi?!? It does NOT resemble medieval clothing. And why that annoying Synthi-sound all the way throuzgh like in a cheap hoirror-flick? Again, nice knot, but why not establish something new, if you desperately need a sort of official-looking training-gear?

  • @Schwertgosch

I see one good reason for using a gi. Wrestling. We train a bit in kampfringen in my club and some of the techniques use grabbing your partners clothes. Normal training clothes don't like this and I feel that they may be torn apart. A gi is made to be strong and many who practise western martial art has done some eastern martial art before and therefore already have a gi at home. So I think that wearing a gi can be practical.

  • Why don't you guys just get your own uniforms and belts instead of copying Japan? lol

A Gi was traditional Japanese funeral dress. A Samurai would wear a plain white Gi (Funeral dress in Japan) under his armor to show he was ready to die in battle. It makes no sense why European martial artists wear a Gi, Jujitsu and Judo is Japanese martial art, it makes sense they wear Gi, as these arts were create by samurai. Why don't European arts wear tunics or something? =P

  • @GuamKomudo

The most commonly used uniform in HEMA is black knee-lenght pants, knee high socks, a t-shirt and/or a fencing jacket, not weary unlike th kind of uniform used by HEMA-entusiasts during the 19-century. This video shows a good substitute for a leather belt with a metal buckler when such a belt can't be used.

    @GuamKomudo

Because nobody manufactures "HEMA grappling tunics" and we would rather train NOW (in a uniform that is readily available) than wait until someone makes one that doesn't look "too Asian" for you.

  • Why don't you just do it in "no gi" grappling. That's usually what my Jujitsu class does anyway... =P

I just hate how it seems that people are putting Asian martial arts into European. I hate seeing movies of people sword fighting in Europe, like Knights, and then someone throws a spinning back kick or something... It's just annoying to me... Not saying you do that, I understand what you mean.

  • @GuamKomudo

Like gurkfisk89 said, many HEMA throws require you to grab clothing (just like in SAMBO/Judo/BJJ). If we only did "no-gi," we wouldn't be able to do all of the techniques.

FYI, the HEMA community has debated this issue at length. The problem is that if we wear medieval-looking uniforms, people think we are doing LARP/reenactment/SCA, whereas if we wear gis, people understand that we are martial artists (at the expense of looking "too Asian").

  • I think you should NOT use Gi, it kinda makes it look like you're just doing Judo or Jujitsu... If you wanna get the name of this style out there, you should wear some not so common medieval looking uniforms, not a gi... The gi has nothing to do with this martial art, and "no gi" doesn't mean naked, you can wear sweatshirts and stuff, it just means not a gi. I just think it makes it look like you're doing a form of jujitsu, and that's lame cause it's not... =P

  • @vaingloria in your single leg takedown, are u appling a light arm drag-ish maneuver?

  • it's like tying a tie, but wrong and on your waist, cool anyways.

  • tttttt

  • I saw some kempo guys wearing their belts like that years ago, and I have been trying to figure out how they knotted it since. Thanks!

  • That is way cool dude

  • Neato.

  • Actuary pretty simple =p but good work 5/5

  • Cest très instructif !

    Merci !

  • As a martial artist who has worn the Asian-style knot for all his life, I find this to be quite enlightening. Great stuff! 5 stars.
