I saw the road company of Dancin' in Mpls around 1980. It was the most enjoyable show I have ever seen. It was absolutely thrilling. I consider it at the top of my favs.
It's not that these dancers look any more "healthy" than today's dancers. What they look like is "Fosse dancers." Fosse preferred taller and more statuesque women dancers, while some other choreographers had a preference for leaner, petite women dancers or no preference at all beyond the dancer's ability to perform the choreography. Dancers today come in different body types, as they did years ago. This was a great show, by the way. I still have my Playbill.
I don't know if we were "healthier" but we were STRONG as horses in body and spirit (Bob always referred to us as his Thoroughbreds) and driven by his passion for perfection. We danced nearly non-stop for 2 1/2 hours, 8 times a week...STAMINA and Pacing were essential. This video contains shots of most of the original company (there were only 15 and 1 swing). Eventually we ended up with 6 swings in order to cover all of us for vacations or injury recuperation.
@gbenedi1 I'm so stoked that I came across a woman named Donna Cerio. She is an excellent Fosse dancer & teacher (and my mentor). I've studied dance my whole life and I absolutely LOVE Fosse... my favorite style. I took to it so well... too bad there are no longer musicals like his.
You're so lucky you got to work with him... I've heard a lot of stories and I know it was brutal, but so worth it. Thank you for sharing your awesome talent with the world :))
You are right, they are wonderful, and looks realy healthy and pretty. Dance makes you young and healty. And its a commercial, so I am sure they selected from nicest dancers.
LOTS OF HEALTHY DANCERS IN THIS COMPANY//I WAS TRAINED IN BALLET MY WHOLE LIFE-BUT IT WAS ALL i COULD DO TO KEEP UP WITH THESE INCREDIBLE DANCERS (I WAS THE 1ST REPLACEMENT AND DANCED WITH THE ORIGINAL COMPANY-LUCKY ME)---AND YOU ARE RIGHT (MAVENSBABY)YOU HAD TO WORK WITH BOB DIRECTLY TO REALLY UNDERSTAND THE SPECIAL EDGE YOU HAD TO PUT ON EVERYTHING IN ORDER FOR IT TO BE **HIS**!
@rocky362 Different time, you have good dancers today, but back then they were more than just good they were...it's hard to explain. But It's all going to be the original routines, and Fosse's stuff you had to act with you whole body while dancing, if that makes any since. I just hope they veteren dancers instead of the "sytycd" type
I was very fortunate to see this show in NYC when I was 8 years old. They did a routine where they nailed wooden shoes to 2x4s. Dancers entered the stage in black body stockings and stepped into the shoes. The lights went out and they had glow in the dark striping down their legs and arms, like stick men. It was absolutely amazing and I will never forget it.
@EllieFerris Hey Ellie---You liked "14 Feet"//I was the 1st replacement on B'Way so I danced with most of the original company// so funny about that silly number--after breaking or backs with "sing-sing-sing" and other numbers-this blacklit number was the audience fav every night--DUH? Fosse knew!
What with the NYC cab driver voice doing the narration?

Oh, I think they definitely look "healthy". Todays dancers are emaciated and anorexic and that is not healthy.
