Sowell, the writer, is one of the most respected economists in the world, and a senior fellow at Stanford University; he doesn't work for Fox News. Too many kids are lazy today and have no work ethic what so ever. Problem is too many parents, particularly inner city parents have no control over their kids.Period. Listen to Philadelphia mayor Michael Nutter discuss take on absentee parents and minority kids roaming the streets when they should be in school, working or doing homework.

@msmithstud There is a drug arrest every 90 seconds in the U.S. and when you compare sentences for "inner city" drugs like crack to "suburban" drugs like cocaine, the sentence length is like 3 times as long, not to mention the racism inherent in the system that allows for the stopping and arrest of African Americans more than crackers along with the privatization of the penal system which is now a very robust industry-it is no wonder that so many African Americans end up in prison.

Crime was lower among african-americans in the 1930s, as was illegitimacy rate and unemployment, when there was more discrimination so discrimination today cannot underpin the bulk of the disproportionate rates today. It's part of a cultural decline.
