  • "Ce nez, ce n'est pas un nez, c'est un menhir!

    - Astérix :)

  • haha gracious is a funny one.

  • Action heroes like Major Dutch and Kratos stand on the shoulders of Cyrano de Bergerac.

  • Rostand was believed to be the greatest author that had ever lived on this planet during his own lifetime. And I know of no work in any language that was praised as Cyrano was. It is plain genius, in every word, sentence, scene or act. Not a single coma would require adjusting!

  • Merembor, you're right of course, you can't fully appreciate it. But I've gotta say, Brian Hooker's translation does a dang fine job.

  • Isn't S O T supposed to be like A S S or something?

  • S.O.T?

    What's that mean, I know S.O.B

  • @RedneckYachtClubber

    “Sot” mean stupid.

In subtitle, there is dot between the letters because those are the only letters (or diploma, or patents of nobility) the arrogant man have.

  • @RedneckYachtClubber SOT is french for "fool"

  • Do you enjoy birds? Well you've provided them a place to rest their feet. lawl

  • SO good!!!!

  • What is the main actors name in real life...is that really his nose or is it fake?

  • @arham06 The actors name is Gerard Depardieu, he's a very successful actor in France, he crops up now and again in Hollywood films he was in the Man in the Iron Mask a few years agb. You should definately check him out, and no it's not his real nose

  • One of the most entertaining and romantic plays ever written. Move over, Romeo and Juliet.

  • This is not the original dubbing I have seen this and it is all wrong! Someone must have dubbed this alone

  • What happened to the entire movie people? I've watched it on Youtube before...is it gone?

  • where is the rest of the video?

  • what is sot

  • @wasup510 basically means idiot

  • it means stupid

  • i played this in high school as cyrano (i am french) and it is the most fun play to play

  • act 1 scene 4.

    wow the translation is bad.

  • like a theter, everythig are described while acter is acting as center of this story.

  • Traduction is pretty good

  • the traduction is bad. i speak french and its rly bad.

  • The translation isn't perfectly accurate because it's done so as to rhyme, like the original French. There are other translations that focus on accuracy, over the rhyming.

  • No so bad. It's my mother tongue and I think it is quite accurate for something that seems (or is it ?) fanmade.

  • I would like to add to what Cyrano said about his nose-

Literature: How many times did you have to lie to get a nose that big?

Sexual: Hey, when you lose your penis, you can always use your nose!

Tool: Dude, I need to make an ice sculpture for my art class, can I use that chisel on your face?

Now if you excuse me, I'll be in hiding.

  • And I would add:

Historical: Oh ! So that's where the Sphinxs' nose has been gone !

  • rien a dire

    piece magnifique et depardieu grandiose

    MERCI GERARD !!!

  • 1897...one of the ever vest story, book, movie ...

  • just read the book today! great story yet tragic ending :(

  • So do all the French

  • Espectacular!! BRAVO GERARD!!!!

  • is the full movie posted somewhere on youtube? or on the internet?

  • a la fin de lenvoi..... je touche :P

  • Edmond Rostand le genie....

  • Consejo:

  • wht does "what a sign for perfumery" mean?

  • They say bigger nose can smell them better, kind of like with wine.

  • ic thx

  • I'd be sad that the subtitles aren't literal, but they were done by Anthony Burgess (who wrote A Clockwork Orange) and read incredibly well.

  • There's no way you can translate in english a masterpiece like this one without losing half the charisma and grace of such a chef-d'œuvre. The only way to apreciate it at it's fullest would be to learn french.

  • been learning french for quite a few yrs

lots of vocabs in it tho

u know if there is the e-text of the script of this film online? i can find the english version but not the french

  • True, I am learning french for that reason. Just at the beginning, but I can feel it's equally good and strong as Shakespeare. Is there a book like "Frequency dictionary of French"?;

Something like ISBN 3-484-24008-3 , but for French, not for German?

  • @Merembor yes i accept what your saying but it's probably going to be a lot quicker for me to read the subtitles :-)

  • Steve Martin did it in the Roxanne screenplay.

  • "panache" is sth central to cyrano

    whts "SOT"

is A clockwork orange gd? wht is it about?

without even a pair of gloves, let alone ribbons and lace

theres a soft and sensitive quality to despadieu's voice that suits the cyarano's vulnerable side of cyrano when he talks to roxane and when he said "je ne vous aime pas " just before he dies

and his reply to a list-nsults

et moi hercule savinien cyrano de bergerac

    love cyrano

  • A sot is a drunk or a fool.

I'm not a fan of a clockwork orange (even though I can recognise its brilliance), it's very intense.

  • These subtitles are horrible.

  • I love this scene, but the subtitles of this version don't say anything about a scissors-box! It doesn't translate "boite de ciseaux" at all. It's supposed to ask whether it is a pencil-case or a scissors-box.

  • This is one of the best movie I have seen in my life! And I'm french!

  • Great film, great Depardieu

  • I love this scene!

  • does anyone know where i can download the movie, its been a while since ive watched this.. [=

  • Could somebody please tell me or send me a link to a video where brings food to the soldiers Roxane says that she does not care about the beauty of Christian? She says that she wouldlove him even if he was ugly and Cyrano is about to confess that it is him that has been writing those letters but Christian dies. Which Acte and scene is it please?

  • This would be Act 4, but I'm not sure wich scene it is...

  • wow wut a kamikaze lol... he wants to duel cyrano... he fought 100 man himself alone -.-

  • Well, that happened after this fight, so it's not like Valvert could of known :P

  • Depardieu is awesome ! So strong, fearless and so sensible !

(If your french is not fluent, you can't feel it truly)

  • omg saw this in french, awsome movie!

  • *suberbe*

  • suberpe, rien d'autre à dire.

  • Great film, great Depardieu!!!

  • That's Gerard Depardieu, he's an amazing actor.

This is, I think, the 2nd best Cyrano out there, but I'm really partial to the 1985 version with Derek Jacobi, and Burgess' translation.

  • The man who plays Cyrano... Isn't that the same man who plays Columbus in that one movie??? (wats it called?) 1492 Conquest or something??? I LOVE this play!!!

  • Magnifique film. Le Depardieu de la belle époque. Merci de l'envoi.
