Rostand was believed to be the greatest author that had ever lived on this planet during his own lifetime. And I know of no work in any language that was praised as Cyrano was. It is plain genius, in every word, sentence, scene or act. Not a single coma would require adjusting!
@arham06 The actors name is Gerard Depardieu, he's a very successful actor in France, he crops up now and again in Hollywood films he was in the Man in the Iron Mask a few years agb. You should definately check him out, and no it's not his real nose
Uma das grades cenas, e um dos grandes filmes, da história do cinema! (vai com legendas em inglês porque o francês...está guardado para alguns, velhos, priveligiados!)
The translation isn't perfectly accurate because it's done so as to rhyme, like the original French. There are other translations that focus on accuracy, over the rhyming.
There's no way you can translate in english a masterpiece like this one without losing half the charisma and grace of such a chef-d'œuvre. The only way to apreciate it at it's fullest would be to learn french.
True, I am learning french for that reason. Just at the beginning, but I can feel it's equally good and strong as Shakespeare. Is there a book like "Frequency dictionary of French"?;
Something like ISBN 3-484-24008-3 , but for French, not for German?
without even a pair of gloves, let alone ribbons and lace
theres a soft and sensitive quality to despadieu's voice that suits the cyarano's vulnerable side of cyrano when he talks to roxane and when he said "je ne vous aime pas " just before he dies
I love this scene, but the subtitles of this version don't say anything about a scissors-box! It doesn't translate "boite de ciseaux" at all. It's supposed to ask whether it is a pencil-case or a scissors-box.
Could somebody please tell me or send me a link to a video where brings food to the soldiers Roxane says that she does not care about the beauty of Christian? She says that she wouldlove him even if he was ugly and Cyrano is about to confess that it is him that has been writing those letters but Christian dies. Which Acte and scene is it please?

Having since seeing this, seen the Jose
Ferrer version, this to me really stinks. Depardieu is wrong for the part for what Cyrano was in the play. Having also just read the play, both movies are their own screenplay. Jose makes so much of the sword fight, and so masterfully, but at expense of the ballade. Depardieu cannot do either. How he would have even been mentioned for an award, much less win any, is beyond me to guess.
The man who plays Cyrano... Isn't that the same man who plays Columbus in that one movie??? (wats it called?) 1492 Conquest or something??? I LOVE this play!!!

Merembor, you're right of course, you can't fully appreciate it. But I've gotta say, Brian Hooker's translation does a dang fine job.

I would like to add to what Cyrano said about his nose-
Literature: How many times did you have to lie to get a nose that big?
Sexual: Hey, when you lose your penis, you can always use your nose!
Tool: Dude, I need to make an ice sculpture for my art class, can I use that chisel on your face?
Now if you excuse me, I'll be in hiding.

And I would add:
Historical: Oh ! So that's where the Sphinxs' nose has been gone !

I'd be sad that the subtitles aren't literal, but they were done by Anthony Burgess (who wrote A Clockwork Orange) and read incredibly well.

That's Gerard Depardieu, he's an amazing actor.
This is, I think, the 2nd best Cyrano out there, but I'm really partial to the 1985 version with Derek Jacobi, and Burgess' translation.
