  • Dude, my German textbook STILL talks about disco-techs. Also, it makes me think that the people in Germany are stuck in the 80's. Way to go Marty McFly...

  • We ARE really good at entertaining ourselves (as you proved with the racecar thing)

  • A Jackalope.

  • It's true!!! We do so many aural exercises in French about going to a discothèques! Our teacher doesn't even really know what they are!

  • finally something I have done that Maureen Johnson hasn't! I figured since you were a traveler you would have been to Mexico, but maybe not. In Mexico last summer I went to the Jaguar Discoteca in Rivira Maya, Mexico. Just so you know, you aren't missing much Maureen. The only aloure of la Discoteca is the consumption of alcohol is aloud at age 18 (the age I happened to by last summer). But honestly how much booze can one 18 year old drink while chillin with her Madre at the Discoteca!

  • LMFAO I have taken 3 years of german and we had a chapter on entertainment and discotheks were all over it

  • We still learn about " Los Discoteques" in spanish! that was hilarious...

  • You're so adorable, MJ.

  • I'm reading that book now :D

  • Not Suite Scarlette, but Girl at Sea :)

  • my father went through a phase not so long ago when he thought it would be fun to open a discotheque.

  • foam peanuts! I choose the bermudez triangle! =D

  • late again, but just for the discoteque discussion it was worth it. so true... sad, but true.

  • 13 little blue envelopes was a great book.

    :]

  • Is the box full of Suite Scarlett related items?

  • trust me i know this is way late, but i just had to say this. if i was to guess what was in the box i would have to say....bubble wrap! haha!

  • If I could get the stupid sound on my camera to transfer onto my computer, I would gladly send you a video responce..but until i figure out which wire goes where, I cannot.

your very random by the way. thats pretty awesome..your videos are intertaining(for sick people too) and i think that is what sick people should do..

you could make a video just for sick people with nothing to do.

have fun with that haha ^_^

  • City Meals on Wheels is a great cause.

I went on a cruise once, and they had a discotheque. It was an old boat though. In fact, I think they retired it a week after that cruise.

  • A Book or a kitten?

  • Maureen, I have indeed been to a Discotheque. It was in La Havre, France and it was on a boat(In fact I believe that the name of it may have been The Boat). I meet a very nice boy there. He was in the UK Navy and had such a think Welsh accent that I never did figure out what his name was.

  • I know this is late.. I guess fruit!

  • I couldn't help but notice that the majority of your book covers feature girls with no heads... do you have a problem with heads?

  • That has more to do with what the publisher decides. Maureen (and most authors) have virtually no say in what their covers look like. Also, in her blog, Maureen has expressed her dislike of the covers featuring semi-headless girls. But that apparently was all the rage a while back. It seems to be changing now to showing the full body (or at least most of the body and including the full face). So yeah, it just all depends on the publisher and cover design artist.

  • Is it a box of Suite Scarlet holiday cards?

  • Yeah, we still learn that word in French, and my teachers, who have been to France several times in the last few years said that that's just what they call clubs and stuff.

  • when I went to Germany in '05 there was a discothek in the town we stayed in. and no joke, they didn't call it a club, they didn't speak of the establisment by it's name, they called it the disco. "hey, you want to be going to disco?"

  • Awesomeness has woven itself into the space-time continuum to the extent that when Maureen checked her calendar, she also appears to look through the YouTube at the 'Added' date.

  • When I was studying italian, discotech was one of the very first words on our list of nouns to memorize...

  • Cookies? Could it be a box of cookies?

  • and stuff on your head!!

  • very festive. i just demanded that my librarian order suite scarlett. :) can't wait!!

    go nerdfighters!

  • cool beans

  • Maureen, you and your books are made of awesome.

  • Seriously, what is it about la discothèque? You're right, every French class I took in high school had a segment on them. The students were always so carefree, with their sortir-ing and fete-ing.

  • Spanish and Polish, too!

  • YAY!!!!

    Maureen!!!!

    HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!!

    DFTBA

  • Thanks for the cheer. Loud noises scare me as well.

  • In the box: a WIG?! A wig in a box!

    ... nvm.

Um... I think in the box is ... a curious george fruit snack wrapper.... No. that's on my desk..

Lol. I got a box in the mail today and now I'm throwing random items in it...

My best guess is that the box actually contains the world's smallest discotheque.

  • Lol. Maureen! Maureen! Maureen!

... hey, have you ever heard the song Maureen by Fountains of Wayne...? Are you annoyed by the Tango:Maureen ala RENT?

    Anyways. DFTBA! Happy Nerdfighter Day!

  • this is hilarious.

  • In the box: bubble wrap?

  • Hmmm.... Maureen is teh hotness.

  • I went to a Disco Tech in Thailand it was awesome... though not sure how the "Disco" part of it was... the lights I suppose...

  • In the box - gift for your mom - maybe tinsel?

  • Maureen, you're hilarious!!

    What's in the box?? Ummm...books???

    :-]

  • MADE OF AWESOME!

  • I know! Clearly the box contains a possibly-alive, possibly-dead cat!

    ... Quantum physics jokes? Anyone?...

  • Excellent, Schroedinger! (sp?)

  • Awesome!

  • In the box: A ceramic Mr. T?

    P.S. Fabulous lipstick!

  • I would have to say that I think the box is filled with AWESOME. Now you just need to open the box and let it free! The world needs more awesome!

  • I can't wait for "suit Scarlett"! Who gave you that giant cardbord cover? Why? And where on earth did they get it made"

  • I can't wait to get my cheer card! :D

  • Thanks for the cheer card!! It's awesome! I want to know more about the Martin who signed it!

  • in the box: air! or Free Monkey

  • A camera, a rollerskate, a tape recorder, a box of chocolates, a book, a movie, a kazoo!

  • I would have to guess that in the box there is NOTHING. or, air. At least, it's something very light.

  • Oh yeah get ur nerd on!!! lol

  • Hahahaha, yous gorgeous an hilarious!!!

I think that on that box what you have its and advanced copy of Paper Towns by Hank Green

  • Let's see...Is what is in the box something to do with christmas? Like, Ornaments or a christmas card? I'm guessing...Ornaments/decorations.

  • Keep going Nerdfighters!

  • I'm just trying to do my part to help with the super awesome, and formerly super secret, nerdfighter project for awesome.... yay nerdfighters!!

  • Yay Nerdfighter Maureen!!

  • Does the box hold a gift?

    =).

Loved the attack of the awesome book poster, I I must admit.

  • sorry John, Maureen is officially the cutest vlogging YA author.

  • citymealing our way to awesomeness

  • Oh, Maureen, you need more comments! *does her part*

  • it's ARC's of Suite Scarlett!

  • i would take the Bermudez Triangle, remember that one from EARLY B2.0, and my guess would be that in the box is an advance copy of Paper Towns

  • commenting to decrease worldsuck <3's from nerdfighter nikki (dramatic nerdfighter)

  • hoo hah!

    awesome.

what's in the box? shoes to match your hat.

  • AAAHHHH!!! NErdfighter awesomenesss.... nice santa hat...

    debbi

  • A pink stun gun is in your box!

  • a box of chcolate?

  • a fruitcake?

  • We learned about discotechques in spanish class too...

  • picture frame?

  • in the box: a glass candy dish?

  • they call all clubs discotechs in Europe :)

  • your books are good but a bit too engrossing i always end up staying up way TOO LATE!

  • me too!

    what's your favorite?

  • Awesome video Maureen, you amuse me so much, I love watching your videos :D

My friend sent me a package the other day, and it had bubble wrap like that with the big bubbles and it was SO LOUD. Oh my gosh I didn't know it could be that loud...I had fun annoying my younger sister with it.

  • yay nerdfighting!

  • hmmmmmm............

Im going to guess that there is a Chistmas present in the magical box of mystery.

  • I quietly admire sedate looking discotechques on a daily basis. Doesn't everyone?

  • What's in the box...the next scavenger hunt clue?

  • What's in the box...your copy of Paper Towns?

  • Great video. There are Meals on Wheels in my town too. A tiny town in Missouri. We know everyone involved and everyone delivered too. Seriously, incredibly small town. Although, there are smaller.

    DFTBA!

  • where in missouri? i live in Kansas City

  • Actually, I'm on the other side of the state. A little town right between St. Louis and Hannibal.

  • kewl ^,^

  • I'm from the Kansas City area! Olathe, to be exact.

  • Great video Maureen... even with the bubble wrap and such.

    What's in the box?

I think it is more bubble wrap and perhaps a snowglobe...

  • I love you!...in the non creepy way! I promise.

  • Awesome video! As for what's in the box.. maybe a llama?

    DFTBA

  • I love your videos.

My guess is...a winter scarf. Whatever it was, it didn't sound like it was clunking around, but maybe that was because of bubble wrap.

  • This was the best video ever. Ily.

  • Great charity! I used to volunteer to make crafts for the meals!

  • I'm so glad you finally made a new video!

  • I totally agree on the whole discotheque issue. We had to learn about those when I was in high school 5 years ago, and that was always my question: Do discotheques even exist anymore? And why are we still learning about them, when learning how to order at a cafe or how to buy shoes is far more useful?

I think it's a record in the box. (That is the traditional holiday guess of what is inside packages at my house. Holiday traditions trump actual guesses every time.)

  • there are still 'discotecas' in spain...if you say you want to go to a club, you mean brothel...i guess it's an easy mistake to make...

  • Fair enough! My European knowledge is very-England centric since I lived there for a couple of months, and I still haven't been over to the continent yet. Someday I will go visit the discotecas in Spain (even though my Spanish is limited to "uno mas!" and my French isn't much better. That's what I get for studying Japanese.)

  • ahhh you NEED to visit spain, they really know how to get down at the disco...i've only lived here for three months but the nighgtlife is INCOMPARABLE - we don't go out to the discoteca till two and then stumble at at seven, whereby the bravest few (ie not me) go on to somewhere that's open till ten in the morning...

it's great but i do find i miss sunday.

  • youtube ate my comment!

  • You are hilarious! Great video....GREAT charity! I want a Bermuda's Triangle! I predict that, in the box, there is a........ present! WOOT! Do I win??? I would make a video response...If I knew how. LOL

    NERDFIGHTERS FTW!

  • You are made of awesome! I read Girl at Sea last week and I loved it. I've also read Devilish, Thirteen Little Blue Envelopes, and The Key to the Golden Firebird. I still need to read The Bermudez Triangle.

    p.s. make more videos!

  • Good morning Maureen! i am so very glad to see that you made a new video!

great charity! food is very important!

  • My guess: Is it a sweet present that had some thought put into it, but not as much as you could have had you not been rushed by the holiday chaos and shoppers, but you are proud of it anyway, but there could be so much more to it, so you wrote a nice note to go along with it, wrapped it all in bubble wrap and are mailing it to a friend or relative outside of the city that you will unfortunately not get to be with over the holidays?

  • pink converse sneaker music ftw, lol

  • Is it a Teddybear in the box?

  • That was so my idea, too! As soon as I saw the box, I was thinking - hmmm, must be a teddybear. A Teddybear named eric, perhaps?

  • Hey MJ,

Two slaps with a wet noodle on the center snap. Put it in at 3 minutes and 33 seconds.

    Your Brother,

    Tom

  • You can just see the thought process, can't you - hmmm, my video is 7:06, half of 7 is 3.5, so that must be 3 minutes and 53 seconds. It's a good thing she is so dang witty, hey?

  • Tom,

Does it help if I explain that I am sick, and it took just about all my thought power to work the camera?

    I hope it does.

  • It does explain it, but you fooled me with your elf hat and healthy good spirits.

My ability to write goes south on me when I'm sick. I hope you're feeling better soon.

PS Should we expect a John-is-sick video soon?

  • Is he sick? I thought he was sick recently. Or maybe I'm thinking of my actual brother...? It's sad that I honestly don't know.

  • Maureeen! Why don't you make more videos???

  • I agree!!!! Make more videos!!!!

  • Totally. I love being able to point kids towards writers who are real people.

  • Hey, robot writers are real people too!

  • free monkey? haha

  • Yay Maureen!

  • Discos are still around in Germany.

  • Really? When I was there, everything was called a Club. Very Americanized...

  • can't watch video yet cause my school comps suck, but commenting none the less. I'm sure the vid is amazing:)

  • It is. The scene where she parachutes out of the helicopter is particularly cool.

  • Oh, Maureen, oh.
