I'm a graphic designer. You don't need all that education. Just a portfolio. I'm still in school and have been doing it for a while.

Sadly though I'm freakin' sick of it. I'm approaching the point where I hate graphic design mainly because I hate clients.

You wont get 100k cuz you have cool designs in your book. You need real experience. Web success is more than just design. You'll need a proven aptitude for meeting DEADLINES and budget, teamwork, understanding client needs, and a strong grasp of web marketing/problem solving. Learn the biz, not just design and you'll grow into a good career. Lose any ego and you'll go further. That said,a good action scripter NOT designer can move up fast if they can take direction, meet deadlines, and are nice.

Learn how to design websites and you won't have trouble finding a job. There's more demand then there are people to fill the positions, and the internet isn't going away anytime soon. Learn flash, Good flash developers are making 65-90k. I have a nine to 5 as a web producer (web equivalent of art director) I make 68k doing that, and I freelance on the side and make another 35k on average, it's alot of work though, but is it really work if you like doing it?

Man, I totally know what your going through. I graduated in May with a bachelors in Design and I've been sending out resumes, emails, PDF's, cover letters, and links to my site everyday.

It's really frustrating. I feel like a fishermen that's been fishing all day but catches nothing. There were some good comments on here though. Some really encouraging ones.

I know what your going through, I graduated a week ago from AIPH with a graphic design degree and now I am making calls every day like crazy trying to get an interview. Im applying in NY and PA. It was very very hard for me to get my first design job. Use every connection you have, don't be shy and don't doubt yourself. Don't be afraid to take the plunge and move to where the good firms are.

Doubt is your most dangerous enemy. Good luck!!

If you haven't found a Graphic Design job yet just keep trying -- trust me it took me a long time to fall into my career. Don't give up and keep on trying -- I didn't get the perfect job the first time and had to take whatever I could (even secretarial -- *shudder*) just to pay the bills.

You're welcome. By the way I'm in Toronto. Make sure you're not just applying to graphic art studios. Most companies have in house graphic designers so apply everywhere. Also make sure you know web stuff as that will definitely get you in the door. Hoever you might consider moving out this way or even more west as it's booming.Cheers!

Did you ever get a job? you should never just have your portfolio online, employers want to see real world experience and actually printed pieces unless you're a web designer, then its totally different

I have a B.F.A. in graphic design and I think that sending your resumes via email would save some fossil fuels and time. Also you should consider making an interactive pdf of your portfolio in Indesign. That has landed me plenty of interviews.

Oh Lindsay....I think my favourite thing about this video is that I don't really remember you filming most of it. I think I realized that you would be filming at some points but I just ignored it and answered you when you asked questions. It is a great (the best!!) representation of that day.
