For some reason the displacements I have are... not working. Even though I haven't done anything odd to them, there is a broken piece of it which sort of hangs over the rest of the displacement, whenever I touch it while playtesting the map, it gets stuck and you cannot move without noclipping out. Any clue as to what I'm doing wrong?
@FaNTaSTiiKHD With SDK? Sure you can, but you can't do it alone you'd need an entire mod team to do it and even then it can take up to a year to make.
@FaNTaSTiiKHD You could use this to make the maps for an online game, but to get the game to work you would need some coders, texture makers(to prevent copyright issues), and who knows how many people to make the models and charecters. But for maps, yea this could work.
Hey, i have a question, i made a rocky underground and upground but i didnt build any walls around it, is this bad or can i leave it like it is?? it all works how it should be but i saw in your vid (almost at the end) that u make another block under it so the box is again closed.. that i didnt do so i wanna know if this causes really bad lag or errors (sorry bad english)
Finally, thanks for this video, it clarified the use of displacement, it was very frustrating. Also thank you for making me laugh my ass off when you threw your keyboard
I hate it how (nearly) every time I search for a tut for source sdk, i'd find something, and then realising a couple days later that you have a better version on the same topic........ Nice tuts, thanks again.
@SALMING789 The displacement is the actual ground itself. The power is the complexity of the displacement. It ranges from 2-4. If you want more than 4, you need to place more than one displacement in your level and place them next to each other, imitating a more detailed displacement.
i maked a map with only displacments on the wall and floor and a skybox around the map but then i was going to try the map it says it cant find the file
for some reason none of my displacements sew together they are perfectly aligned point to point and both were created with 4 power they are even the same size, is it because one is a "wall" (cliff wall) and one is the "floor" on top of the cliff or why
@Tman545380 I just assumed it was 6 sides because if you line them up, (even if they're not the same power) they should join together. Unless you're trying to join one whose side is already joined to another instead.
@Tman545380 Upload your map's vmf file to the internet somewhere (A site like mediafire is best) then PM me the link to it and I'll see what you're doing wrong.
@imp0ssiblew0rds Your map isn't compiling properly. When you compile your map, copy the text that appears in that pop-up box and send it to me on youtube in a private message.
@leetbh Try making a block, and making the top texture and two adjacent side textures displacements. Select all 3 at once and click 'subdivide'/ Should make a smooth curve. From there you can mess around with them.
3kliksphilip, i used one of my hl2 blend texture, then i dont know what i did, and some grass spawned randomly in the displacement... it looked really nice, but now i cant do it again i dont know why. Can u tut this?
Hey, I'm wondering... I want to make a ditch I know right click makes it go down not up. But when I go down I go into the ditch and I have a roof above me that is the same texture as the ditch... Any way I could get rid of that?
@RandomPieGuy Delete it and remake it, I guess. I've never had a problem with bad geometry so I don't know how other people manage it. When you make the displacement, do you make the displacement on all 6 sides, or just one?
@fleaSP The only reason I can think of for getting stuck is if they're more than 45 degrees steep. If you lower one point of a displacement then you can make a deadly pit that will trap players in, simply use a more detailed displacement or make sure you don't just raise / lower one point to prevent this from happening.
I am trying to blend two textures for a pond, but When I go to paint with the paint alpha tool makes vertical lines with the textures on the whole block.
@bwavo Either your grid size is too small (And it's still snapping to it, but at a smaller scale) or you've managed to disable the lock. I'm afraid I don't have Source SDK installed right now, but compare the icons at the top of your SDK to mine, and see which are selected and which are not.
For displacements,, when i want to sew the displacments mine will not work at times for some reason. for example, im making a cliff and i make the 2 displacments blocks and i want to sew them they won't sew one block is on the bottom and the other is on top, can you help?
@midgar8784 They must line up with each other, so that each of the displacement 'points' are aligned to the grid. Also, it helps if you only make one face of each brush a displacement, since they can't sew if there's, say, a flappy displacement bit in the middle.
@iszalgocomin I haven't ever made any myself, so I don't think I could give advice on the design of one. However, if you want to make the slopes, I suggest you mess around with the Vertex tool on the left hand side of the screen, it allows you to manually manipulate individual corners of blocks.
@wowaccpass You can't lower the level using that function, but there are so many ways to make the displacement lower you don't need the 'raise' function.
@3kliksphilip But i figured out i could use Right-click :) i meant lower the raised areas, but i didn't clear my self in a good way (sorry for my bad english, i'm to tired for this)
@3kliksphilip Usually when I do displacements I try to keep all of the edges seamless, however when you try to keep the edges together on a larger scale (mountains, pathways, troughs, etc.) the brushwork before converting to displacements is tough to get your head around. Especially if you're subdividing into quads, I was wondering if you had any displacement 'theory' you could provide.
@yadda101 Ah I see what you mean, I find the best results come from making the world out of big blocks that roughly represent the hills and dips in the level. Sounds obvious, I know, but it seems to work best. You've also got to be careful and ensure that all faces have only four corners, and that they're completely flat surfaces. Don't want any weird, twisted faces (Yes I've managed it occasionally). I can't really offer much advice on displacement placement since you get there through practice
@kingjulianhird123 I wouldn't say I'm the best map maker ever, thanks for thinking that but I only really make tutorials since I never have the time or patience to actually finish maps of my own :P
please i need your help and reply qick. you know the things at the left side (block tool ,clipping tool, entities tool etc...)there not there anymore i can't see them anymore. do you know how to make them appear again? please reply back i'm making a mod.
him for some reason the curve tool don't work for me. when i try to compile the map, it says ''system can't find selected file'' in other words, it cant make the map into a bsp. file... hope you can help me :)
@3kliksphilip I know that you tell us how to use the smooth button, but... it's kind a difficult to explain.

@imkindaDasH No, I believe this feature has always been around, it's just that they were probably trying to keep the frame rate high and neglected the displacement's detail at points. (So to speak)
"Never press ctrl-t when using displacements" FFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
@Rulictar Watch my new tutorials on it, it should answer every question you have on light_environment. Plus, I don't think that I can answer such a vague description of the problem.
Hello I have a question, please don't respond in mock sarcasm or suggestions on where to look because I for some reason can no figure it out while putting a lot of effort in.
:)
When I elevate (raise/lower) etc, like you said in your video it is quite sharp, however in the video ITSELF it is very smooth. How do I get it to be smooth. (The setting is set to smooth).
@3kliksphilip Thanks. When I raise it, it only raises a little, I can control quite comfortably, but it comes out blunt (hard) like imagine a pyramid rising out of the ground, I tried raising that value thing to 4, but it basically does the same thing but on a smaller scale.
@TheUberCayk Increase the radius of the geometry painting tool and it will cause more points of the displacement to rise at once, giving a smoother hill. If 4 isn't enough, watch the end of the tutorial where I say how to join multiple displacements together
The first thing I did was make a giant penis

imkindaDasH 1 year ago
@imkindaDasH No, I believe this feature has always been around, it's just that they were probably trying to keep the frame rate high and neglected the displacement's detail at points. (So to speak)

@iamstormtrooper Your map won't compile.
3kliksphilip 1 year ago
@3kliksphilip so? it still is supreme satisfaction.

How do I click on only 1 side of a wall at once. Because every time I click on a block it selects all the sides of a block instead of just 1 side.

@Rulictar Select the Toggle Texture Application Tool from the left hand side of the screen first
3kliksphilip 1 year ago
@3kliksphilip It doesn't matter, I figured it out. Hey, my environment light doesn't work correctly, why?
Rulictar 1 year ago
@Rulictar Watch my new tutorials on it, it should answer every question you have on light_environment. Plus, I don't think that I can answer such a vague description of the problem.

Hello I have a question, please don't respond in mock sarcasm or suggestions on where to look because I for some reason can no figure it out while putting a lot of effort in.
:)
When I elevate (raise/lower) etc, like you said in your video it is quite sharp, however in the video ITSELF it is very smooth. How do I get it to be smooth. (The setting is set to smooth).
TheUberCayk 1 year ago
@TheUberCayk What you're raising is like a sharp spike, or it's just raising an area too quickly? Which one?
3kliksphilip 1 year ago
@3kliksphilip Thanks. When I raise it, it only raises a little, I can control quite comfortably, but it comes out blunt (hard) like imagine a pyramid rising out of the ground, I tried raising that value thing to 4, but it basically does the same thing but on a smaller scale.
TheUberCayk 1 year ago
@TheUberCayk Increase the radius of the geometry painting tool and it will cause more points of the displacement to rise at once, giving a smoother hill. If 4 isn't enough, watch the end of the tutorial where I say how to join multiple displacements together
3kliksphilip 1 year ago
@3kliksphilip Ah yes it worked, thanks.
