Yeah, you tell it like it is guys. Sheppard was the second coming of Christ -- a saint, really -- and couldn't possibly have done a thing wrong. I mean, sure he was too pissed to ride and sure he'd be in a domestic dispute an hour earlier and sure he'd already accosted a homeless guy, but other than that he was just an innocent victim.
What has this city come to when you can't even beat the shit out of someone who knocks you off your bike without him trying to run away from the attack.

Just type in 'annotated' and 'cyclist' in youtube, and you'll find the damning evidence of the first collision. Darcy is knocked off his bike onto the ground, and Bryant backs up his car and drives around him. I think at this point Darcy pursued on foot, attempted to make a citizen's arrest. Taking the license number wouldn't have been an option, especially now we know it's Bryant. He hasn't been charged now with failing to remain, he wouldn't have then either. RIP Darcy.
For the spin doctors out there who want to insist that Sheppard was drunk when he was riding his bike, think about this. If you are drunk, you cannot walk a straight line. If you cannot walk straight line, then how can you keep a bike up? A person on a bike needs to be sober not just to avoid getting into an accident with another vehicle, but also just to keep from falling over. A drunk driver in a car doesn't need to balance on two wheels. Sorry to burst your bubbles, but Darcy was sober.
Hmm. I saw the beginning of the street footage. Looks like Sheppard pedals in front of Bryant and takes the pull position on the red light. lol I am so happy this fool was tossed around on his bike, it's about time....and for those thinking I'm being incredibly insensitive, all you have to do is drive anywhere in the 5 mile radius that is downtown Toronto (& other parts of the city as well) and see exactly just what I'm talking about. It's about time a high-profile case will set some precedence on how to ride a bike PROPERLY in the damn street..you know, like we learned way back in the 3rd grade.
nlovano : What you just said about cyclist's is stereotyping , and you just also agreed to the mantality of a truck driver who would very much like to crush your skull against the metal inside your car , just because they may not like something you did or the way you drive. If you can't handle a cyclist on the road with you , you shouldn't be driving at all. Get out and walk or take the bus. Painted lines make all of this understandable for you though.
We also learned compassion and empathy in third grade, we learned not to bully, and most of us already knew that we shouldn't KILL people.. "a high profile case" THIS WAS a MURDER and even if you don't agree with that statement show some respect and compassion... this is the Death of a human being, a father.. People are suffering terrible loss and pain.. get a freaking conscience you idiot!
I wish I had seen everything from start to finish, then I would know if I was being fed BS from the PR machine Bryant hired. You guys aren't working for them are you? I'm not spreading any rumors or innuendo, just regurgitating eyewitness accounts. It's called speculation. Why Mr Bryant wouldn't want to involve police in the initial collision with Mr Sheppard? Getting license numbers won't result in charges, and it still hasn't resulted in a charge of failing to remain, even with death.
bicycle couriers need to take a road test. They're a hazard to everyone and themselves. I'm glad I carry a handgun everytime I drive in toronto. I just point it at their faces everytime they cause trouble to me and my family.
He knew that Sheppard was off his car as soon as he pulled back into the Westbound lane because he was yelling at him the whole time to get off his car. He should have stopped then, especially after smashing Sheppard against trees and mailboxes. Bryant left the scene of a collision that resulted in Darcy chasing down his car by foot. I don't know anyone who would like 'uh, too bad'. And do you think the police have time to investigate? LOL. Only if someone dies. Sorry, but Bryant failed.
phillydisco : Obviously Bryant is guilty of vehicular manslaughter. Nobody , and I mean NOBODY who has driven for more than 10 years , would have intentionally expected to be allowed to run Darcy down or run him into anything with their car and get away with it. The problem is we don't know why it was such a serious situation , that murder was a consideration. The only thing that could account for this would be if Darcy had a gun and was going to use it on Bryant.
If Darcy had any kind of weapon, they would have said it by now. Bryant didn't have a single scratch on his face, so there wasn't any physical contact. If he feared for the safety of his blonde passenger, she could have sought shelter in a nearby store or subway entrance.Michael Bryant is a trained boxer, so he knows self defense. If you were allowed to drive away every time you feared the anger of the other person in an accident, the law of failing to remain would not be on the books.
He's also a practicing lawyer and is well versed in the law. If you say he 'panicked', that can also imply that he was worried he'd be caught with something. The problem is that he drove around the corner and parked. Never returned to see if Darcy was okay. When people do that, you have to suspect that they might be doing something, like getting rid of evidence in the car, or wiping off the car, because you're out of sight of witnesses to the crash. Bryant as a lawyer should know better.
"I think he's not going to do any jail time because of what they didn't charge him with: Failing to remain at the scene of the accident, failing to stop (he kept on driving); and Obstruction of justice (getting rid of a witness: his passenger). It may or may not have been his wife. The fact is, they weren't around when the police showed up. As a lawyer he should know that's a no-no." Bryant is as guilty as sin. Shame on him.
Obstruction isn't clear since I'm not sure if the passenger came back sooner, or later. They say it was his wife, but I don't see her anywhere in the footage of him in the car, and she's thin with dark brown hair. Failing to remain at the scene of two accidents, they definitely should have charged him with those accounts. If he left because he felt 'threatened', that should have been up to the courts to decide, since he may not have been competent enough to judge a real threat.
If you go to CTV's website, they show footage of the incident AFTER Sheppard has been knocked off. Bryant is seen changing lanes preparing to make a right turn onto Avenue Rd. At that point, it seems like he knew Darcy was off the car, so he should have stopped. But he kept going. Failing to remain at the scene of the accident is a serious charge, yet he didn't get booked on that because it's too obvious that he fled two accident scenes. Darcy was no longer a 'danger'. He's going to walk.
I really find it strange that in light of this incident, they're talking more about cyclists who should be licensed. I agree there are bad cyclists out there, but you can't compare the damage a bike does to what a car does. I think drivers need to take road tests every 5 or 10 years. I'd be a millionaire if I had a dime each time I saw drivers who don't signal intent, make turns when prohibited, fail to yield to pedestrians on sidewalks, block intersections, stop past stop positions...
It's not about the damage a bike does compared to a motor vehicle. It's about making sure each cyclist goes through a training course and is aware of their obligations and not just their rights, and being accountable when they are not taking measures to fully ensure their own safety. Which is a moot point in this case as the cyclist was experienced but drunk and acting crazy.
It wasn't just the scene of an accident it was also the scene of an attempted assault. And by law no one is required to remain at the scene of an accident if their safety is still at risk. And I already know people are going to say "NO HE WAS OFF THE CAR THEN SO NO YOU'RE DUMB" well no. No one after that would now stop the car, get out and run to aid some who was just attempting to cause bodily harm to himself and his wife, potentially.
I myself saw the video tape of the entire accident...all i will say is Bryant's vehicle bumped,on purpose, the drunken cyclist's bike...it seemed provoked...although both men were intoxicated,as afr as we know right now, neither performed like a rational, resonable human being.
Bryant will walk without time. That I already heard and know.
Allan Sheppard was wanted on 61 criminal warrants. That evening he was drunk, had an altercation with his GF and a homeless man and was cautioned by police to go home. To expect Bryant to sit in a vehicle and take a beating is folly; it is a very vulnerable position.
This story could easily have read- " Former AG, beaten to death after minor rim bender with cyclist".
But it didn't read that way. I could postulate all sorts of hypothetical outcomes too, but I won't. There is getting away from danger and then there is accelerating into objects in order to batter a human body off the side of one's car. The latter case is no longer a matter of self defense - it's reckless driving without due care or regard for the safety of others.
The media can put what ever spin on it they want. The fact is we have a DEAD man here that can't come back and a former Ontario AG that broke several laws while taking the man's life and running away leaving the scene while the guy lays on the road HOPING he would be alright and not giving a crap if he died until he was cuffed and arrested. Now all of a sudden this prick is remorseful. Put his own rules against him and crush him in his car.
They've showed some really grainy, and altered, footage of what may have happened. The problem is, you can't tell who it is in the video. There should be clearer footage out there so we can make out who was in the car, and if a collision did occur prior to the final incident.
CTV's story says that a collision occurred, and Darcy had chased down Bryant's car by foot. If that is the case, then Bryant fled the scenes of two accidents: the one with the bike; the one with Darcy getting slammed against the trees and possibly run over by Bryant's car. If those two obvious events aren't enough to charge him there, then something is up.
If the guy was really grabbing for the steering wheel, why in hell would Bryant gun the throttle, and blast 150 yards,on down the road, on the sidewalk, in an out-of-control expensive automobile? Did they get Bryant to blow in the tube or piss in a bottle after?
The police said alcohol was not a factor in Bryant's case. There was nothing said if they tested him for other substances.
If you look at the photos of him sitting in the police car, he looks pretty angry rather than upset at what just happened. For someone who was supposedly celebrating an anniversary with his wife, and is known to wear nice clothing in public, he sure was dressed down. Did the police take his clothes before putting him in the car?
I didn't comment on the video yet. It's actually in the very middle of the distance that was traveled, assuming that Sheppard had grabbed on at Bay, which is the orange yellow traffic lights when you pan to the right. Sheppard was knocked off across the street from the next building beyond Winners, if I'm not mistaken. He wasn't dragged for a few feet, it was half a kilometer. One witness said there were sparks coming from Sheppard's shoes. Letting go wasn't an option.
If Michael Bryant wanted to be a stunt car driver, he should have moved to Hollywood. I can assure you he will be acting when in court & will shed some CROCODILE TEARS. Douchebag
For all you non-cyclists out there: if a car starts moving and you are knocked off your feet while standing next to it - no matter what the circumstances - the situation changes. At that point you are hanging on for your life, trying not to get run over by the rear wheels. You aren't capable of threatening anything at that point and as the car goes faster your odds for survival diminish.
Yeah, pity the poor car driver who was so threatened. He's not the one dead.
So if Bryant was NOT reckless, the Antonym of reckless would apply in this case. Antonyms of reckless: TIMID & CAREFUL. Who thinks Bryant was timid and careful when he mowed down a poor cyclist & pinned him against a mailbox, crushed his head with his rear tire, then DROVE away?
Why should he get jill time? For some crazy guy attacking you in your car and would not let go of it. He got what he was looking for death! Thank god another fucked up crazy cycles is off the street
Sheppard had been hit before and was unable to ride for a long time. I don't know if justice was served in that case, but I have a feeling that he wanted Bryant to pull over and he wouldn't co-operate. Three times they interacted. By the third time, Sheppard probably hoped that by hanging on, Bryant couldn't get away again. I don't think he expected him to drive like John Connors trying to knock of a Terminator. It's sickening that someone drove like that in a busy downtown street.
"So if Bryant was NOT reckless, the Antonym of reckless would apply in this case. Antonyms of reckless: TIMID & CAREFUL. Who thinks Bryant was timid and careful when he mowed down a poor cyclist & pinned him against a mailbox, crushed his head with his rear tire, then ran away?"
This is a damn interesting interview on Steve Paikin's Agenda (available online) wherein a commenter makes a suggestion that it appears as though Bryant is on some kind of drug, possibly 'cocaine.' I'm not necessarily convinced, but it is an interesting remark, and well, rich people doing coke; not exactly rare. Coke-heads doing crazy shit while on coke - happens all the time. (Though I'm hoping that they were both clean, it would be interesting to know for sure)
If someone starts trying to attack me or my wife when I'm in my car, one of two things is going to happen. I'm either going to grab my tire iron and start swinging, or I'm going to drive away.
Don't blame Bryant that this guy wouldn't let go of the car.
Accidents happen, but attacking the driver, then not letting go when the car is moving away is suicide.
Apparently the cyclist had an altercation with his girlfriend earlier in the day and the police were called...and we ALL KNOW that means that he deserved to have a drunken, over-priviledged and rich politician murder him in the street like a gutter dog. Right???
No one said he deserved to die retard!! We're saying wait for all the facts, and right now facts are coming out that Sheppard had a history of being an angry drunk, and WAS drunk at the time. And stop saying "cyclist" as if that matters. If Sheppard was on a motorcycle would people be less sympathetic to his death?
And Farawayreacharound, where is the info that Bryant was drunk? And if he was an "underpriveledged poor cab driver" that would mean you are more sympathetic to him?
and if the toxicology report shows that Allen was wasted and then what? Can you cyclist supporting retards even consider the possibility that Bryant was reacting to some drunken lunatic jumping on his car, and might not have freaked out? Don't get me wrong, FUCK Bryant for his public service record (I always vote PC) but really you should wait for all the facts to come out.
Michael Bryant is a #1 douchebag. No mater what the circumstances of the cyclist holding on to his SAAB! You don't kill a man for your expensive car! Bryant is a BASTERD!
Michael did what any reasonable person would do. He was being attacked by a mad cyclist and was in fear for his personal safety and his wife's safety. I hope I am a juror on this one
Sympathies are wasted on this drunken loogan. He only has himself to blame that he ended up with his head squashed like a grape. The only people that will miss him are the city's meth dealers

The cyclists are getting out of control in this countries. They think that they own the roads or something. Can't they stick to the countryside or the parks?
I am ashamed at Canadians being so unsympathic to a cyclist whose was killed by a driver, not negligently, but recklessly and this is in law manslaughter, no matter how bad he did; taking the law into his own hand with excessive force is manslaughter
Witnesses said he was with a blonde. His wife is a brunette. If his wife was with him, why did he drop her off at the hotel down the street? As far as I know, the passenger was gone when the police caught up with Bryant. He left the scene of the accident, and he's obstructing justice by sending off his passenger, a participant in the crash. He's a lawyer and he knew better. Maybe he was under some influence. Alcohol isn't the only thing that can affect judgment or cause rage to that level.
That's what was put out into the media a day or two after the incident. But we don't know if she was with him because the passenger didn't stick around to talk to the police.
Are you sure that's her? You're talking about the woman with blonde highlights wearing a red top and talking on the phone? If you look on the internet, you can find pictures of Bryant's wife. She's a thin woman with dark brown hair. That person may or may not have been the passenger. Witnesses said that the 'blonde' in the car had fled and that a woman came forward some time later to talk to the police. Nothing was said about them being there the whole time.
If you are hit by a car, and the driver insists on driving away and not sticking around to have it dealt with by the police, what would you do? It sounds like this cyclist was trying to get him to stop. He didn't know the driver was crazy and would drive up onto the curb and use him as a human battering ram. Add to that obstruction of justice because the passenger in the car was sent away before the police could question her.
To me it sounds the saab cut him off. The drunk cyclist was fine but upset and chased him down to do whatever to him. Then we all know what happend next. Cyclist should have not tried to continue this fight.
If that's the case...then yes he participated in his death.
If the details are much more sinister and Bryant went on a mad killing spree....then no. It's more likely the former though.
Bryant should have slowed/stopped his vehicle. It is inexcusable to keep driving - even if a psycho has attatched to his door - unless the guy had like a gun or knife.
Hilarious! So if a maniac is hanging onto the side of your convertible, waving his fist at you and screaming obscenities, you think you would calmly pull your car to the side of the road (keep in mind this is a CONVERTIBLE) and allow your face to be bludgeoned? Oh, you ARE a phenomenal human being with a very fanciful opinion of himself.
If I were in the same situation I may have very well done the same thing Bryant did - I would be panicked and probably not think straight. That still doesn't make it the right thing to do. I don't subscribe to moral relativism.
I never said that what Bryant did was justified. But I do have the ability to imagine myself doing the same thing. They teach people to "stop, drop and roll" if they're on fire because the FIRST instinct is to start running. You need to be TAUGHT to do the correct thing. When unexpected and scary things happen to us, we often react in panic. Too bad so many people have no ability to imagine themselves in a situation.
I love Michael Bryant, All you morons who think Darcy was a victim, go fuck yourselves, oh and by the way,I don't like Pitbulls either.

If you can't handle a cyclist on the road with you , you shouldn't be driving at all. Get out and walk or take the bus. Painted lines make all of this understandable for you though.

The only thing that could account for this would be if Darcy had a gun and was going to use it on Bryant.
fthrcast 2 years ago
If Darcy had any kind of weapon, they would have said it by now. Bryant didn't have a single scratch on his face, so there wasn't any physical contact. If he feared for the safety of his blonde passenger, she could have sought shelter in a nearby store or subway entrance.Michael Bryant is a trained boxer, so he knows self defense. If you were allowed to drive away every time you feared the anger of the other person in an accident, the law of failing to remain would not be on the books.

Bryant did the right thing....try to drive away the crazed animal (Darcy) but like and an animal he jumped on the car.
digyabatty 2 years ago
He's also a practicing lawyer and is well versed in the law. If you say he 'panicked', that can also imply that he was worried he'd be caught with something. The problem is that he drove around the corner and parked. Never returned to see if Darcy was okay. When people do that, you have to suspect that they might be doing something, like getting rid of evidence in the car, or wiping off the car, because you're out of sight of witnesses to the crash. Bryant as a lawyer should know better.
phillydisco 2 years ago 3
No. I'm not implying he's worried about being caught with something.
You are very good at spreading misinformation and innuendo.

phillydisco YOU MADE EXCELLENT POINTS
"I think he's not going to do any jail time because of what they didn't charge him with: Failing to remain at the scene of the accident, failing to stop (he kept on driving); and Obstruction of justice (getting rid of a witness: his passenger). It may or may not have been his wife. The fact is, they weren't around when the police showed up. As a lawyer he should know that's a no-no." Bryant is as guilty as sin. Shame on him.
ralph0865 2 years ago 3
Obstruction isn't clear since I'm not sure if the passenger came back sooner, or later. They say it was his wife, but I don't see her anywhere in the footage of him in the car, and she's thin with dark brown hair. Failing to remain at the scene of two accidents, they definitely should have charged him with those accounts. If he left because he felt 'threatened', that should have been up to the courts to decide, since he may not have been competent enough to judge a real threat.
phillydisco 2 years ago
Has any surveillance footage of this incident been shown on TV yet? Or maybe online.
xdrcft56 2 years ago
If you go to CTV's website, they show footage of the incident AFTER Sheppard has been knocked off. Bryant is seen changing lanes preparing to make a right turn onto Avenue Rd. At that point, it seems like he knew Darcy was off the car, so he should have stopped. But he kept going. Failing to remain at the scene of the accident is a serious charge, yet he didn't get booked on that because it's too obvious that he fled two accident scenes. Darcy was no longer a 'danger'. He's going to walk.
phillydisco 2 years ago
Thanks phillydisco.
xdrcft56 2 years ago
Sure!
I really find it strange that in light of this incident, they're talking more about cyclists who should be licensed. I agree there are bad cyclists out there, but you can't compare the damage a bike does to what a car does. I think drivers need to take road tests every 5 or 10 years. I'd be a millionaire if I had a dime each time I saw drivers who don't signal intent, make turns when prohibited, fail to yield to pedestrians on sidewalks, block intersections, stop past stop positions...
phillydisco 2 years ago
It's not about the damage a bike does compared to a motor vehicle. It's about making sure each cyclist goes through a training course and is aware of their obligations and not just their rights, and being accountable when they are not taking measures to fully ensure their own safety. Which is a moot point in this case as the cyclist was experienced but drunk and acting crazy.
Jontoronto27 2 years ago
It wasn't just the scene of an accident it was also the scene of an attempted assault. And by law no one is required to remain at the scene of an accident if their safety is still at risk. And I already know people are going to say "NO HE WAS OFF THE CAR THEN SO NO YOU'RE DUMB" well no. No one after that would now stop the car, get out and run to aid some who was just attempting to cause bodily harm to himself and his wife, potentially.
Jontoronto27 2 years ago
> it was also the scene of an attempted assault.
By assault, I assume you're talking about Bryant ramming Sheppard while Sheppard is on his bike.
awesley1 2 years ago

This story could easily have read- " Former AG, beaten to death after minor rim bender with cyclist".
ronaldmac 2 years ago
But it didn't read that way. I could postulate all sorts of hypothetical outcomes too, but I won't. There is getting away from danger and then there is accelerating into objects in order to batter a human body off the side of one's car. The latter case is no longer a matter of self defense - it's reckless driving without due care or regard for the safety of others.
iTripped 2 years ago 2
Bad things happen to pedestrians who attack people in cars.
Looks to me like Allan lost his biscuit when he was hit by Bryant's car and tried to attack him.
Bryant panicked when confronted and took off, trying to get Allen off his car anyway possible.
It's a tragedy, but it's not rich vs poor, or bikes vs cars.

They've showed some really grainy, and altered, footage of what may have happened. The problem is, you can't tell who it is in the video. There should be clearer footage out there so we can make out who was in the car, and if a collision did occur prior to the final incident.
phillydisco 2 years ago

FeldwebelWolfenstool 2 years ago
The police said alcohol was not a factor in Bryant's case. There was nothing said if they tested him for other substances.
If you look at the photos of him sitting in the police car, he looks pretty angry rather than upset at what just happened. For someone who was supposedly celebrating an anniversary with his wife, and is known to wear nice clothing in public, he sure was dressed down. Did the police take his clothes before putting him in the car?
phillydisco 2 years ago 2

ronaldmac 2 years ago 3
I didn't comment on the video yet. It's actually in the very middle of the distance that was traveled, assuming that Sheppard had grabbed on at Bay, which is the orange yellow traffic lights when you pan to the right. Sheppard was knocked off across the street from the next building beyond Winners, if I'm not mistaken. He wasn't dragged for a few feet, it was half a kilometer. One witness said there were sparks coming from Sheppard's shoes. Letting go wasn't an option.

ralph0865 2 years ago 4
For all you non-cyclists out there: if a car starts moving and you are knocked off your feet while standing next to it - no matter what the circumstances - the situation changes. At that point you are hanging on for your life, trying not to get run over by the rear wheels. You aren't capable of threatening anything at that point and as the car goes faster your odds for survival diminish.
Yeah, pity the poor car driver who was so threatened. He's not the one dead.
iTripped 2 years ago 4
So if Bryant was NOT reckless, the Antonym of reckless would apply in this case. Antonyms of reckless: TIMID & CAREFUL. Who thinks Bryant was timid and careful when he mowed down a poor cyclist & pinned him against a mailbox, crushed his head with his rear tire, then DROVE away?
ralph0865 2 years ago 4
Why should he get jill time? For some crazy guy attacking you in your car and would not let go of it. He got what he was looking for death! Thank god another fucked up crazy cycles is off the street
niccrant 2 years ago
Sheppard had been hit before and was unable to ride for a long time. I don't know if justice was served in that case, but I have a feeling that he wanted Bryant to pull over and he wouldn't co-operate. Three times they interacted. By the third time, Sheppard probably hoped that by hanging on, Bryant couldn't get away again. I don't think he expected him to drive like John Connors trying to knock of a Terminator. It's sickening that someone drove like that in a busy downtown street.

If you are hit by a car, and the driver insists on driving away and not sticking around to have it dealt with by the police, what would you do? It sounds like this cyclist was trying to get him to stop. He didn't know the driver was crazy and would drive up onto the curb and use him as a human battering ram. Add to that obstruction of justice because the passenger in the car was sent away before the police could question her.
phillydisco 2 years ago 5

I don't subscribe to moral relativism.
shonester 2 years ago 2
I never said that what Bryant did was justified. But I do have the ability to imagine myself doing the same thing. They teach people to "stop, drop and roll" if they're on fire because the FIRST instinct is to start running. You need to be TAUGHT to do the correct thing. When unexpected and scary things happen to us, we often react in panic. Too bad so many people have no ability to imagine themselves in a situation.
