@Byron10301 color scheme is still acceptable. its the inflight service this is really bad. Have travelled on qatar and emirates many times, there service is a thousand times better then our saudia service.
@digitalwolves I flew with Gulf Air once, and I loved it also - I don't know why, but all these small Persian Gulf countries have come to own wonderful Air Lines.
@Byron10301 Qatar on november 22, 1993 started their service with a few leased planes from Srilanka imagine . Today they are the fastest growing airlines in the world. This year alone they put down an order for six 777. On June 22, 2011 Qatar Airways wins the coveted title as the World's Best Airline at the 2011 World Airline Awards.. After all this and despite being neighbors, ours airlines didn't learn anything from them.
B747-400 superseded SP overall but now B747-8IC. It's good to see the baby B747 though.
What's your opinion if Boeing shorten 747-8IC like the SP? I somewhat find that interesting but @ the same time pointless cause of B777-200LR and 300ER.
why Boeing can think of designing these 747-SP? I personally think that 747 symbolize 'giant in the skies' but what happen here with SP? in terms of market demand, A330 or Boeing 777 can replace 747-SP. (Special performance) is true performance when Boeing attach a Concorde Engines to it... That special.. Ohh man i can understand, please enlighten me why is Boeing make a Baby 747?
@peterFans This aircraft was for the really long haul routes the normal 747s couldn't reach. They were also useful for lower density routes, or routes with small runways. Qantas used them from Sydney to Wellington, which at the time couldn't fit a normal 747. Qantas retired theirs in 04
@peterFans Just to make sure you know. The Boeing 747SP was developed in the 70's and was put out of production in 1983. The 777 and a330 are plane first flown in the 90's.
@peterFans These shorten 747s were made in the mid 70s, they weren't high production units (40 something made). They were requested from some airlines as a longer range higher speed alternative to the full-size 747 of the era. Production ended in the mid-late 80's.
@QueBeta75 one of the main buyers were SAA who needed a really extreme long range machine to take them around the bulge of Africa in order to get to Europe. They were at that stage not allowed to fly over Africa. Johannesburg - Rome took something like 15 hrs on SAA
Actually SAA was not a major buyer. Pan Am was the major buyer (and with a little help from Iran Air) Pan Am basically told Boeing; you have to make a plane for us that can fly NY>Tokyo and San Francisco > Sydney and LAX > Hong Kong non-stop. Iran Air, SAA and TWA were all benficiaries of Pan Am's muscle back then. PAA saved Boeing from bankruptcy with the 747. (Do you really think Boeing would design a whole plane for SAA or Iran Air??? Please....) Know the facts jack.
@KSharp320 It was basically the same concept that demands planes like the A340-500 and the 777-200LR. Boeing shortened the 747 for two reasons...to increase range and to attempt to satisfy a much smaller demand that was just beginning to ask for non-stop round the world routes like JFK-HKG, etc. Less than 50 were built because the expected market didn't materialize. It really wasn't until recently that the market the SP was intended for materialized.
@jplemaf At the time in the late 70's through much of the 80's, it was the fastest sub-sonic long range commercial airliner in the world..It also had the longest range of any commercial airliner as well..SP stands for special performance.
Eine Boeing 747sp ist sehr selten. Du hattest echt sehr viel Glück dass du eine 747sp gesehen hast. Von diesen Exemplaren gibt es nur 45 Stück auf der ganzen Welt.
well most saudi pilots have beard which, doesn't look professional ,saudi govt claim 2 be moslims they r double face,i used 2 live there if u r a forign they treat u like shit but, united Emirates r much better by far they respect human rights!
You are very big liar, most immigrants who are working and live in Saudi Arabia, are treated with great respect by Saudi citizens. I lived there with my family in Riyadh for about 17 years. People are nice & kind.
@s5251 wallah i lived in Mecca 4 three years,u guys treat immigrants like shit, pakistania nd,yemeni and,Eygptian so who is the liar?what is the matter the truth heart so please don't bullshit beside uguys treat women like shit they can't drive why?ajneby tersh ba7r does that word sounds familiar 2 u?
It had to be in order to clear to FL420+ (42,000 or higher) - the 7471-2-3 and 400 cannot go that high (under normal circumstances). The rudder was large also allowing more manouverability. Also the wings on the SP (tip to tip) are longer than the fuselage (the only commercial plane that designed like this).
No, it's because the body is shorter than the regular 747 meaning the rudder is closer to the normal axis and it hence needs a stronger force to yaw the aircraft.
747SP (special performance) is the 'short version of a 'regular' 747 but with a longer flight range. Now with modern technology, 747-400 could easily go further than 747SP with greater payload and use less gas. This classic version was considered as obsolete years ago.
Lovely aircraft!
