In memory of Alejandro Maclean (1969-2010)

It is with great sadness that we share the loss of Red Bull Air Race pilot Alejandro (Alex) Maclean, who has died today at the age of 41 following a fatal accident in his native Spain while carrying out aerobatic training for an Air Show. Our thoughts are with his wife Emma and their two children aged 7 and 12.

At age 24, Canada's Pete McLeod will be the youngest ever pilot in the high-speed, precision flying race, while the three other rookies - Japan's Yoshihide Muroya (35), Australia's Matt Hall (37), Germany's Matthias Dolderer (38) - are all also younger than reigning World Champion Hannes Arch (41) who joined in 2007.

im paul bonhommes stepson, and most pilots do massive changes to airplanes such as longer/shorter wings, ect. also, one of the pilots even created a plane, MX2 for the air race's.

I heard that MX2 was engineered for faster straight way speeds & better turning maneuverability, however, all of the top 3 winners for May 2008 world series were flying Edge 540's

I personally don't know the specs for these aircraft - most of them are Edge 540's.

I don't believe they'd be able to stray too far in terms of modifications for competitions (unfair advantage).

Yes, that particular plane has a forward swept design. However, only the trailing edge is forward swept. Most of the pilots fly the Edge 540 like MariaGarcia said, but a few also fly the Extra 300 or the MXS.

It's  Bo-105.. no modifications, that's how they leave the factory.

Nope. The 105 is probabely the most manouvrable helicopter to date. there are some other pretty cool videos of this bird on youtube. do a search for "Bolkow BO-105"

RESULTS:

Paul Bonhomme (Great Britain) snatched 1st place; Kirby Chambliss (USA) 2nd place; Nigel Lamb (Great Britain) 3rd place; Steve Jones (GBR) 4th place; Mike Mangold (USA) 5th, and Peter Besenyei (Hungary) took 6th.

NEXT STOP: Perth, Australia as the battle for the coveted 2007 World Champion title continues!
