I'm gunna be a freshman at this school but there is no way on earth that I'm living in that small thing for any amount of time. Thank God I don't have to, thank you GI Bill!
@nicelogin2 there are quite a few dormitories - some better than others. hedrick hall is, in my opinion, the worst set-up at ucla. i assure you, the other dorm rooms are quite larger. i lived in rieber terrace in a double the year after this, & it was amazing how much room we had. :)
i am considering to go to ucla and i wanna know how much tuition/room and board cost. i have some basics figured out but what do you think are some necessary items to bring to your dorms.
Microwaves / fridges... you can only bring one or the other, or rent the combo. We brought both, and hid the m-wave in a wooden box with a door. The RAs never figured it out.
Dining halls... they're buffet style, but you can take out anything you can hide under your sweatshirt. I have SO many plates and cups it's not even funny. Actually it is funny.
Classes... find people who took the classes in the past, get all the old tests, study them, then ace your own midterms and finals.
Some professors let you bring in 1 page of cheat sheets. Using a scanner, photoshop, and a photo printer, shrink old tests down to 3x2 inches and print entire old tests on your cheat sheets.
I hope my messages have been an inspiration to current and future UCLA students. Work the system and WIN.
It's the same in real life, as you'll soon find out.
it's not that the ras never "figured it out," it's that they aren't allowed to look through your stuff. they, frankly, don't care anyway. but there is a reason that free-standing microwaves are not allowed.
people have the choice to be resourceful & work the system, but actions are a show of character. it's about respecting one's school, respecting one's peers, & respecting oneself.
i guess that's why nice, honest guys often finish last...
the transition was rough, but i love it. most teachers are a bit distant - as can be expected in such a large university - & the walks can seem neverending on long days, but the campus is beautiful, the activities are many, & there are some teachers & leaders that can change your life. some courses, however, seem to have one goal in mind: to make life miserable & days even longer... but, there are always things going on & always people there to help.
as jpredsox said, it isn't included... but i ordered a microfridge both of my two years in the dorms & i found it worth it. i'm not one to break the rules, & i needed a microwave. the ONLY way to legally have a microwave in the dorms is to have a microfridge. plus, i didn't have to take home or sell a fridge in the end, i split the cost with my roommate, & my apartment now has a full-sized refrigerator & microwave. the company should send information before the term for you to decide.
there are both options. dining halls are a buffet and one cannot take anything out with them (except two cookies, ice cream, or a pastry)... but there are also quick-service restaurants where one buy specific meals to take back to their room.
meal plans differ in the amount of meals and the times in which someone can get that food per week. premier plans allow one to swipe whenever they want, while regular plans only allow one to swipe once per meal period.
Get Premiere. It is the only way to live. 19 or 14 is up to you, but having the luxury to get multiple items per trip or swipe in a friend is awesome to have!
i was a bit upset with it at first and i didn't exactly enjoy my living arrangement, but some people grow to love it... even miss it when they move on to less social places. i wouldn't be so quick to hate it - even though i did not have the greatest experience, i realize that i could have made a lot more of the situation. you'll definitely get used to the smaller space... & then you'll appreciate space that much more! haha.
OMG! I'll be a freshmen this upcoming fall (2009) and I got placed in Hedrick too. I haven't heard much good stuff about it so now I'm kind of nervous and trying to focus on the "rim of the world" view I might have. What was your experience like? Any suggestions/experiences worthwhile?
some people love hedrick. i am just in favour of space & living in a triple in hedrick doesn't really give that. my view had a little of the ocean in sight, but the view you'll have obviously depends on your placement. some dorms face other buildings & that can be awkward for some.
those who choose to live in a residential hall tend to be social, so you may enjoy that aspect. i met one of my best friends in hedrick - we were neighbors. so, bad came with good. anything can happen. good luck! :)
as you can see, i tripled in a residence hall my first year. personally, i would have picked a plaza if i had known. i avoided my room a bit - it was always hot, cramped, and/or loud. i'm a huge fan of personal space, and i'm not incredibly social... but, if you want a very social living arrangement, residence halls are your best bet. a triple in a plaza would definitely be more comfortable (space & bathroom set-up), but you're not forced into sociality.
it's definitely not easy, but i'm not associated with admissions.
there aren't specific tests specifically made to determine admittance to ucla, but all uc campuses require that applicants take the sat (the act & ap tests may help). one just has to do well enough in school, well enough on those tests, & show a personality &/or ability deemed "worthy" (through essays & such that are part of the application process). if you're really curious about it, i suggest you ask around & research. :)
we have room inspections, but we are notified of a timeframe. so basically, you have time to hide anything you're not supposed to have. other than that, i think rooms are only further inspected with evidence of foul play.
I stayed in Hedrick freshman year, best time ever. I was poor so I couldn't afford the suites. Second year I did Rieber but I still climbed the hill to Hedrick for the food, it was the best. Loved the Hawaiian nights.
well, this is the worst room set-up at ucla in one of the oldest buildings. the room i'm in now is twice the size, with one less person, & with a private restroom. my friends even have private living rooms in their living arrangements. so, it's definitely not enough to compare uci & ucla dorms with this video. besides, i stayed at uci for camp once & it made me appreciate air conditioning that much more. ;)
Hwy im tripling also and my room isnt that bg im mad w gotta share two closest its a bummer and i cant even sit up on my bed and i know you guys have snack for days you mom hookin them up lol
was the closet under the bed much smaller than the other two?

Is the microwave/fridge combo included in the room?

Nope. It is about $200 to rent. In my opinion, not worth it.

wat happens if u don't want to have a dorm u can have ur own apartment to sleep and study?
puffyhiyumi 3 years ago
yes, there are various apartments around campus. they tend to be cheaper than dorms because overpriced meal plans aren't included.

if you're curious about parking at ucla, permits are quite difficult to get.
