  • 3m 44s - is that Jonathan Meades?

  • I don't think this song is really aimed as a criticism of America as a whole, but specifically at one particular US company: Capitol Records. Marillion fans will know what I mean by that...

  • Part Two:

Pretty soon, the people are odds...no trust...no faith...chaos.

While their pants are down fighting over nonsense...

Swoop in and take anything of real value away from them.

  • The wedge represents the age old concept of divide and conquer.

As a US citizen I can attest to the way divide and conquer politics work.

    1. Think of an offensive or divisive label or brand.

    2. Think of an offensive or divisive label or brand again that is a direct opposite philosophy.

    3. Market both brands aggressively and slap one label or the other on as many people as possible.

    4. Pit the two sides against each other and keep making links until everyone is everyone's enemy.

  • big wedge+money

  • Great song. It is amazing how when Fish started his solo career after his tremendous success with Marillion, that the record company put a lot of money promoting his debut with Their BIG WEDGE..and now he tour clubs on a shoe string budget..that is the music business...

  • OH BIG WEDGE!

  • @alexskerrycool Gimmie some of that BIG ol WEDGE!

  • big wedge is money. hence why some of the limited edition 7inch singles of this song were in a pack that looked like a wallet. big wedge = big money

  • The "Return To The Childhood" Tour track list began with this one. Great song, great souvenir! <3

  • I was clearing out some of my old video when I saw this song on one of them - good video, better song with awesome lyrics - but can someone explain the concept of the 'Big Wedge' as Fish describes it here? I know he's talking about America, and about how The UK is selling off all it's prime assets for the sake of profit to the detriment of the people - eventually, but in what context does the title of the song apply here?

  • @salimm The 'Big Wedge' is America because of it's shape.

  • @janhin345 I always thought of it as the big slice of the pie, both pie as food and pie graphs. Basically, big business and big greed. You could be right about the America shape though :)

  • @salimm "Wedge" is slang term for money. That's all.

  • @elainewithnail

    Thank you! Didn't know that!

  • @salimm The Big Wedge is a Big Wedge of Banknotes

  • @gsleith

Thanks! Your explanation was the best IMHO!

  • @salimm i actually think, in this case THE BIG WEDGE means the division between rich and poor...between the haves and have nots that greed and the pursuit of money is putting people and countries.

  • a bit phill collins kinda music, but than.. hmm.. better? yea...

  • The Big Wedge=USA....as of late that dream has been shattered for a lot of people unfortunately. Great Song for 89/90 which was appropo for the time...

  • a big hit and a great song!!!

  • what or who are the big wedge?

  • @skintrade Amerika

  • Eh...? 'proving that leaving Marillion was a tragedy.....' what total bobbins, this is BRILLIANT...!!!

I never liked Marillion (?!?) but so loved this album, & stumbled across this purely by chance 10 minutes ago, haven't heard or played it in at least 10 years......

I'm happy....& also love the TOTP performance.

  • A bloody prophetic song if there ever was one.

  • @silverhawks

Aye! The UK should have dumped Tory/Labor and voted for HIM instead!

  • I actually think it'll be a bigger hit NOW than it was in 1990 - seeing is how most of what he's singing about is slowly coming true ...

  • Great rock song. Great album. Great lyrics. Great vocalist. I like this side of Fish.

  • Proving that leaving Marillion was a tragedy, this is generic pop-rock at it's worst, he needed the musicians in Marillion to provide the music! No wonder his career went downhill fast!

  • Ehi.... this song remember the old Marillion!!! Great singer!

  • I think this is Fish's highest solo entry from 1990 got to Number 25, great song non the less.

  • very nice! and Fish is so good looking with the black hat and black clothes.

  • I'll have to order this DVD.

  • Thanks a lot.

  • Thanks for posting :D
