Golden Bear ammo is steel cased but brass coated. It runs like a champ and runs like brass ammo for just a little more than steel ammo's cost. That would work fine I'm sure ... so .. no excuse for bitching about these malfunctions. Spend a little more for Golden Bear or Silver Bear. You'll be fine then.
Wow looks like you guys know your range safety! You pointed the rifle at yourself with the selector on fire and holding the charging handle back. That’s smart! I will definitely follow your advice and review. I wouldn’t try and pass myself off as a professional doing all the unsafe actions I just witnessed you doing. You gentlemen are the consummate professionals.
@pasdabeer if you were to spend $1200 on a gun why would you run 20+ year old cheap ammo through it? That's like running unleaded gas in a Lamborghini.
First of all your using junk ammo. I wouldn't run wolf unless it was the last ammo on earth. Second the review would have been a bit more credible had it been done by a professional. At 1:00 in you never chambered a round after you cleared the malfunction, yet you tried to fire the weapon. Also before you clear the malfunction you should always place the weapon on safe. You should really invest in some decent firearms training.
@GodslilRedneck23 If you knew a damn thing about 762x39 rifles, you would know that steel cased Russian/Chinese ammo, along with the recent splurge of Yugo brass cased, is the STANDARD for 762x39 rifles. If it cant function with wolf/tula, uly, bear, or the tiger ammo, it shouldn't be on the market.
I DONT GET ALL THIS FANCY SHIT COMING OUT. WHY NOT JUST STICK TO A REGULAR AK47 THAT DOESNT HAVE A PROBLEM EATING UP ALL 7.62 AMMO, FIRES DRY, DIRTY? WE MIGHT AS WELL JUST START WEARING FLIP FLOPS WITH PEDICURED TOES WHEN WE GO OUT SHOOTING.
I have the Sig 556 Swat and use the Sig mag or Magpul, of which I prefer. Probably run close to 5000 rounds through it. Mostly Wolf or American Eagle. And have zero jams. Love the gun! You can run through a magazine as fast as you can pull the trigger. At least that has been my experience with my rifle. A friend has the patrol version, and had equally as good experiences with his. I don't know if you where shooting a factory dud or dud mag in it? maybe I got lucky with mine? Great Gun, though!
I have tried to hate my sig556 but it is stunningly accurate, fast into action, and smooth and precise. it has been 100% reliable and I am sad to say out of all my rifles I have ever had, it is the only on without even so much as a stovepipe, not even one time, with cheapest steel cased ammo I could find. The 556R here is upsetting, I, like so many others, was excited about this one!
It looks like if you actually pull the charging handle like your life is depending on it (or doing a malfunction drill) it will eject those misfires. Either way, shouldn't be that bad. Has Sig done anything about this?
Thank's. I do not like the feel of the Sig 556. Just feels clunky and not really a good rifle for my needs. Thank you. There is a company here in Oregon. From Toledo, I think. They offer an AR with a ceramic coating. Is this viable? Looks really good and the gun feels great. but I have no knowledge about it's dependability. Thank's and your vids rock.
I am curious what will feed 5.56x45 (.223) Wolf ammo? I have had a DPMS and Del-Ton AR-15 and they wouldn't feed it at all. Also, I had a Saiga in .223 which fed it without complaint, but wasn't too accurate out past 100 yards like the AR's are. I prefer the AR style assault rifles. Any suggestions?
@snowturbo911 First of all, avoid the Tula Wolf. Stick with Barnul or Vymperyl. Second, the DPMS has a tight .223 chamber, in spite of what its markings may say and .223 chambers and steel case ammo does not go well together. My Colt eats steel case like candy.
my Sig556 is 100% reliable even with wolf. Amazing to see how the same design chambered in a different round could be so bad. When I first read of this rifle,I wanted one, but I think I will stay away for now.
my son took me to his gun club to shoot his sig ,,,he had some wolf steel case rounds ,, malfunctioned every second or third round ,,, so ,, we started using remington brass ,,,,, about a thousand rounds later , not one malfunction
I’d like to see this same test repeated with other manufactures ammunition. If the issues disappear, then that would point to the ammunition. If they persist, then we know we have a blueprint that needs to be sent to engineering, Right? Lest we forget the issues the first M-16’s had simply because somebody not on the design team decided to change the powder in the cartridge supply.
I'm going to say to all those saying to buy "good ammo" ... the 7.62x39 was designed as a steel case round, whether polymer coated or copper washed. If you design a 7.62x39 weapons system you design it for the standard ammunition, not high price brass case light primer civilian ammo.
I have seen this vid on multiple forums, the gun has kinda gotten a bad rap. Possibly just a lemon that nearly all manufacturers put out. Are there any updates on it? Did Sig do anything to remedy the problems it had? I love the 7.62x39 cartridge, but just not the AK platform. I'm sure that after it being released now for nearly a year they have fixed the issues. Thanks!
I really REALLY want a Sig 556 Patrol, but all the issues people are having, is really scaring me away. Do you think maybe, your particular issues are confined to the 7.62 models? I heard somewhere that Sig USA stopped all production of the 556 for a bit to fix the problem and maybe by now, the issues are resolved, at least for the standard 5.56 models. What do you think?
The entire 556 line is sketchy at best.. For that money and if a piston system is that important I'd recommend just buying a piston driven AR. If the piston isn't a strong point for you the DI system works just fine, mine runs like a champ and you can mod an AR a hell of a lot more than any Sig 556 to suit your needs.
I hear ya lol. I never liked them at first and I just ran AK pattern rifles, a while back I found a M&P15 for a good price and figured hell why not. It'll run all day long with my SGL21, just gotta know how to maintain the weapon and keep it lubed properly where it needs to be and they'll run with the best of em. Plus the never ending amount of stuff you can add to them is fun as hell lol.
@echoside190 Yeah, if I get an AR I'll probably get a DI since AR's were designed around it and that's what makes it unique. I kind of don't like the idea of a piston slapped on top of an AR. If I wan't a piston rifle, I got my AK. It'll be nice to experience a whole new platform. I'm pretty much already warmed up to AR's. Just waiting for that gunshow later this month.lol
With my 556, it does not like the Wolf much because of the burn rate of the powder. I have to have it on the dirty setting to operate reliably. The Russians uses a pretty consistantly lousy powder. That could have something to do with part of your malfunctions.
As for the ejection problem, there must be some sort of bolt abnormality going on... All in all, this video will probably scare off any bug sales they hoped for.
@dogbert41 If it can't run on wolf, then there is no point for this rifle to exist. Wolf tends to be the "standard" in 7.62x39 and people shoot 7.62x39 because it's inexpensive, common and runs fine in their AKs. If I want a SIG that needs more expensive brass ammo I'd just buy one in 5.56.
I just bought a sig556r, and was a little bummed by your video. I immediately ran out purchased 90 rounds of yugos n went to range. Not one jam not one flaw!!!! I love my sig556r. It was extremely accurate when I dialed n my scope. I know yugos are corrosive ammo but clean ur guns after every shooting!!! Paid 1050.00 brand new out the box. I would choose it over my bushmaster xm15 ar5 every time. I guess u just got a bad one, it happens. I pray 10,000 rounds from now I feel the same. Take care
The SIG 556 ("optimized" for the american market) is total shit what I hear. But the Swiss Arms 550 and 551 are very reliable guns! They are manufactured in switzerland and used by the military there, and they never jam!!!
You guys said it! You paid over almost two grand, so why wouldn't you pay for good ammo. That is like buying a new Corvette with a high compression engine that needs premium gas and running the cheep stuff through it; It wont work right and will eventually damage the engine!
@willpmack Probably because brass cased ammo is a huge waste of money and the rifle was designed, so Sig claims, to be used by the military. Guess what the military uses in 90% of the countries using 7.62x39? Yup, you guessed it - Russian and Chinese steel cased ammo. It really show a lack of knowledge about the 7.62x39 when you say things like steel cased Russian ammo is "cheap stuff". It's a military standard.
If you have a 7.62x39 rifle that won't run Russian, ammo, it is an unmitigated piece of shit. It is just that simple. You said it, he paid two grand and got a turd that makes a $400 WASR look like a Rolls-Royce. SIG's QA/QC is pure garbage and they are quickly becoming a laughing stock. They need to pull their head out of their asses and deliver the goods.
@mdpuckett You have a valid point but, this gun was not designed to to use that ammo. Try running inexpensive ammo through a Glock 17 or 19 and see what happens; Give you a hint, stove pipes and, jams. Glock makes some of the best stuff you can get. Professionals know to buy the good stuff or reload their own ammo. If your life depended on your weapon functioning wouldn't you buy the best. You want to run Russian ammo buy a Russian gun and shoot all day for cheap and be happy.
@willpmack Just don't expect a weapon that is not designed to run that ammo to function flawlessly it is priced on the high side and marketed for the law enforcement and military people who run the high standard ammo. Not ammo that is left over from the cold war. That cheap ammo is not held to any QC standard aside from when it was originally manufactured 20 plus years ago.
@willpmack I will give you a hint what happens when I run cheap steel cased ammo in my Glock 17 and 19's....bang....bang..etc. I shoot cases and cases of cheap Russian Steel case ammo thru my Glocks, I attend multiple classes and practice at least 40 time a year. I go thru 9mm like water and Glocks eat steel cased ammo fine.
If Sig was dumb enough to design a rifle that cannot use 98% of the ammo on the market for it, including Russian steel case, they they deserve to choke on the rifle.
This may shock you but grown-ups with decent jobs can afford nice things like Glocks, spare magazines, lots of ammo and training classes. You do have something to look forward to if you can just stay in school and get a worthwhile degree. Five thousand rounds of Russian 9mm is like a thousand dollars. That's chump change.
Seriously, SPORTS Dude don't shoot yourself in the face!
Every time you you showed a malfunction a different type of ammo was produced. If you buy a 500 count box of 7.62 for for 99 bucks you get what you pay. That European style steel cased enameld ammo is not made for that Riffle. If you want to shoot the steel cased ammo use an SKS it will eat that stuff like candy. Did you bother to contact the manufacturer before you posted this hate fest?
@willpmack The overwhelming majority of 7.62x39mm ammo out there is steel cased. So if they designed a rifle chambered for that round that only feeds brass.. They fucked up & made a shitty design that isn't worth the damn near two grand. This thing is a failure, Sig fans can get butthurt & make excuses if they like. But this isn't a lemon, it is a shit design.
@willpmack So, he should buy $1 dollar per round brass cased ammo for this gun? That would be a waste. Other people who have this rifle had problems with brass ammo also. I owned a SIG 556 and it was total garbage, had to be send to SIG many times and still they never fixed it.
Does the 556R have a flat faced bolt with an extractor on it, or is it enclosed like an AR bolt? Also seems like they should have just made the charging handle a solid piece of plastic instead of some sort of rubberglove over a stick.
I was really excited to find Sig made this gun since it takes 7.62x39. I am looking for a great gun to take that load since it is cheaper than 7.62x51. But this video is disappointing. I want my guns to be able to shoot cheap ammo. My Glock shoots everything I put in it, reloaded or factory. I want my rifle to do the same. My search for an excellent 7.62x39 rifle continues.
damn shame! they had the idea right, but come on, quality is everything in the gun world! they should have delayed the release of this gun for testing.
On the plus side, I've put hundreds and hundreds of rounds through my Sig 522 and it is perhaps the most reliable .22 I've ever encountered. Zero failures, ever.
If you like the Sig pattern rifle and want to shoot cheaply, pick up a 522.
it seems the timing is off, or something...i have been looking at these and now i am just pissed..i would not spend a dime on this..you would think sig would look at these vids and get a clue..hey sig!!!!!! pull your collective heads out of your asses and fix these issues..whoever is in charge needs to be fired for letting this crap out on the market...your qc sucks... what a waste!!!!!
Hadn't seen this video yet. Wow, what a piece of junk. That or, their design extraction method is to have the operator extract every round and the times when the round flew out of the action is actually a malfunction (per the design). :)
They dont make the 556 like they used to... I have an older model ER with a side folder and it's an awesome gun. Recent Sigs have been a bit spotty tho it seems.
The SIG556R and SIG 556 series is an abomination. I'm sorry, but if you try to defend substandard quality and constant QC mistakes you're deluding yourself. If your rifle can't digest Wolf or other steel cased ammo, it's shit.
After your first case jammed, you dumped it out, pulled the clip out, closed the slide, reseated the first round in the mag, inserted the mag and then pulled the trigger. The gun is never going to fire without being cocked and chambered. Second, after it "misfired" you opened the slide and showed the camera how a round was half way in the mag and half out pointwd towards the chamber. You never tried to completely close the chamber again. The round will slip if you hold it open and tilt it.
I understand it's an issue but it's only an issue if you use that shitty wolf ammo. You get what you pay for in cheap ammo. I'm sure there weren't too many issues with good ammo. I didn't watch the previous video that you did on the sig 556, I'm just commenting on this video. I'm not trying to be an asshole.
@Shogun5561776 The only problem is that another owner on AR15.com posted his testing results with a number of different types of 7.62x39 ammo and half of them had the same failures. See my blog (link on my main page) for the details.
@Sturmgewehre I'll check it out. I'm not an owner of a sig 556 but I was interested in buying one. I'll have to do some more research. Thanks for the info.
@Sturmgewehre I remembered being extremely concerned because I had purchased the rifle, then saw this video. I have now shot around 300 rounds of Wolf and 500 rounds of the Yugo surplus brass without a glitch. Rifle is extremely accurate compared to my Romanian Ak-47. I did have a persistent ejection problem after cleaning it where I did not place the gas piston tube correctly. I have Bump fired several mags in a row without a jam.
@Shogun5561776 in my opinion and that just my opinion, reliability of a rifle should't be based on the "ammo quality" because if it comes to the real use of a weapon, u are not guaranteed to have the quality ammo. you shoot what u have, and weapon should function.
@414bushman True I agree, I don't shoot wolf because all I ever hear is that it sucks. I always think about buying it to try it but the guy I buy gun parts from always tells me that it will mess up my rifle. So I figure why would he not want me to spend more money at his shop so I figured he was telling the truth. Thats all I'm going by.
@Shogun5561776 Not sure what you consider good AK ammo? Wolf is made buy the same companys that supply the russian mil. with their ammo. New have had a problem out of an AK with it.
Sig advertises this rifle as an option for Special Operations Soldiers who have ready supplys of mil. 7'62x39 down range. Please tell me how many caves in ascrackastan are full with Fed. American Eagle ammo?
I had one of these rifles and it was a raving POS!
I'm not one for reading, so if I repeat someone sorry. I own a Sig 556 and so far no problems with about 2000rds through it so far. However I have seen another have problem and it was the 30rds mags. I only use 20's, I think the 30's are to long and hard to get to the ground. Again sorry if I repeated som, eone.
@DaytonaRoadster Where on the sig sauer website? Or was that just something else that somebody heard somebody put on their facebook? I don't know if Sig's facebook ever said it.....BUT I do know I own this rifle and that I spoke DIRECTLY WITH SIG SAUER CUSTOMER SERVICE, and it steel ammo was never an issue...So you can base decision on rumor or, get it from the source. There are some problems, but Sig will fix them. Most people prefer to get stuff right outta the box, and thats okay too!
Every mass produced product will have issues from time to time as production line go out of spec with time. Even LWRC has problems. From what I am able to gather, Sig CS has been able to fix rifles with problems. People who continue to complain either don't own one and are repeating things they've read online, or are owners who are too lazy to contact Sig to have the problems resolved.
@austincole14 Brass ammo like Winchester is close to $1 per round, who would fire a 7.62x39 rifle at $1 per round? Worthless if it can't fire steel cased ammo.
I got my 556R back from Sig and ran 120 rnds of the cheapest russian ammo I could find online ( the white box simply markd Hunting Cartirdges) Shot 120 rnds as fast the range would allow, and coulnd not replicate any of the previous faliures. Never had to change the gas setting or anything. They replaced the butsock clasp with an aluminum one, and no longer comes undone. Also they included an extra mag. AT NO POINT DID SIG EVER SAY ANYTHING ABOUT NOT USING STEEL AMMO, EVER IT'S NOT TRUE.
Ive been fantasizing about this rifle for quite awhile.. even put money aside during my deployment to purchase one. Seriously, thanks for saving me from dealing with this rifle.
So let me get this straight Sig...i get two spend three to four times as much on rifle that fires 7.62x39 than BOTH my current WASR-10 rifles, it cant use regular AK steel mags, like my WASR, it wont exject rounds correctly, like my WASR, AND you wont warranty it if you shoot 99.99% of the ammo made for AKs out there, which is steel cased (oh and i do have yugo brass ammo too Sig), even Century Warranties my rifles for 90 days..AND THEY DIDNT NEED IT! F U POST 2005 SIG SAUER
To update, I recently sent my 556R to Sig for warranty, after they had asked me to run 100 rnds of "high quality" ammo. I could only find 40rnds of Winchester @ $31, and 20rnds of HornetA @ $23...I whent with the Winchester, didn't find much diffrence in performance. I'm curious to see what they will do to resolve this. I'll let you know about the results, when i get it back.
@the1860s Kerbs Custom, Geweher Werks, Poly-Tech/Norincos (chinese pre-ban imports, damn nice AKs) are the top teir. Arensal comes a long second behind them.
I own this rifle. Bought it when it first came out. I've experienced the same malfucntions, but no where near this frequency, and only after i've spent about 80 rounds then i have to switch to postion too, then I'll get another 80 before it FTE about everyother shot. Also when first cleaned I have to run a few rounds on postion 2 before it'll cycle on 1.
Can it be the mag ? I have a Sig 556 and have had no problems using all types of 223 & 556 ammo. Real cheap crap and real good stuff no problems. HUM!! Let me know if you figure it out just in case.
I am of the opinion that the ONLY rifle in 7.62x39 I will own/shoot is a variant of the AK-47 or SKS. I've owned Chinese, Egyptian, Romanian, and Russian rifles in 7.62x39 that have been almost 100% reliable. I do not see the need for a Sig, AR, or other rifle in this caliber.... Sort of a "reinvention of the wheel" to me....
I bought the Sig 22 caliber version of this and it operates just like yours!
Very disappointing. I used three types of ammo including CCI and same old same old. Jam after jam. I sent it back for repairs and they told me to use the ammo that I already did. I haven't shot it since. I was considering buying the 556 version but not now.
Great Review, I was giving serious consideration to picking up this rifle, and now I will not do so.
I also would point out that this rifle is advertised as being designed for SPEC OPS operating in countries where they would want to use a rifle chambered for the 7.62x39. If this weapon won't shoot steel cased ammo I have to question the validity of their SPEC OPS design claims as well.
SIG.....really? really guys? I am kind of set aback that SIG would do this.
Dont anyone dare blame it on the ammo. my RRA has shot all types of .223/5.56 ammo. steel case...reloaded....green tip...HP...not one malfunction. same thing with my AK. not one malfunction.
SIG needs to do something. And they need to make this right. Beyond that they need to get back to their old quality control.
@snowsniper8 Over $1000, I paid $1799 for my SIG rifle and it was the worst thing I've ever bought, I will spend the rest of my life telling everyone to avoid buying a SIG product.
The issue of the charging handle rubber coming off is a known problem also to the Swiss made rifles, but it will start to fall off after long military use
(mine started to come off after 27 weeks of military service and more than 3000 rounds fired )
@Sturmgewehre I am completely aware that you have both tested and demonstrated the function and reliability of steel cased Russian ammo in a number of arms. Purely playing the devil's advocate here, have you tested the 556r with American made, or other brass cartridge ammo. I admit am very skeptical of this rifle, considering the large number of issues you experienced with 4 different specimens, but to be truly fair, I think you ought to try feeding something else.
@altegarden Back in those days a Mil spec. rifle was a Mil Spec. rifle, you would get the real thing. Now these days due to the laws and "dollars & sense" and more laws, very few Mil spec. firearms make it to the civilian market. Manufacturers have noticed a strong civilian market for these type of firearms so they started to make civilian versions of the real deal and they are milking it all the way to the bank. This 556R would of never made it past its demo stages in any military organization.
Hard to believe SIG would release this rifle. My SIG556 Classic (made here in the US) have cycled all types of 5.56 & .223 of all types, starting with steel cased surplus all the way to high end match grade ammo without a hiccup. I also own 2 P226 and a P228. One of the P226 and the P228 were made in Germany. The craftsmanship is quickly noticeable by shaking them, The slide of the US made unit (a SIG226-9-TAC) rattles while the older other 2 are completely silent.
I've noticed a difference in US made Sig handguns and German made Sig handguns too. The US made guns exhibit a worse fit and finish than the German made counterparts. I've also had two Sig US made pistols that were problematic and failed to properly function (P220 and GSR 1911). I've not had very good luck with Sig US products over the last few years.
Thanks for your reply. Although I have yet to encounter a malfunction on either my 556 Classic and the SIG P226-9-TAC I consider myself lucky and will pass on any US made SIG until Sigarms of US steps up to the plate revamping their Q.C. standards, procedures and start producing high end firearms which they were known for.
@Sturmgewehre I have two German 229 that work excellent , so i went but the 238 380 has pocket , conceal carry and its been just big disappointment. i paid with tax plus extr clip nearly $700 for it. I realize now after trying all sorts ammo that remington 88 jhps feeds well through it. It needs the extra pressure to feed properly. the standard ball 95 to 92 G just dosnt want it. Give it the high octane ammo.

@Sturmgewehre I have a German made 226 that's been used for over 25 years (mother carried with with a sheriff's office and now me)... only issue it has ever had was two missfires with 3,000+ rounds (in 25 years) put through it. The missfires were due to reloaded ammo at the range.
Very disappointing to see this type of performance out a name such as Sigarms.
I've been a true follower and believer of Sigarms for over a couple of decades now but since they started to fabricate here in the US, I've noticed that their quality have degraded. The 550 rifle's design came from the AKs, with its basic design making it reliable and practical and it is absurd to see it jam like this due to steel casings.
wooo good thing there's people out there like you who put this stuff out. I so wanted one of these. But the reliability and quality is pathetic. Can't use steel cased ammo? that is retarded. SIG might as well give up the rifle game and just concentrate on QC'ing their pistols. Their rifles are full of fail.
Thanks for the follow-up. It's worse than I originally thought, and it was bad to begin with... Do ya think Sig's secretely lowering their standards because of financial issues or anything like that? That's what I'm thinking... Just trying to find an explanation for this.
Sig customer service agents are now telling people calling in with problems firing Wolf ammo that Sig will void your warranty if you use steel cased ammo in the rifle. They claim it is not designed to be used with steel cased ammo. This was posted by a user on my Facebook page and confirmed by another poster on the sigarms556 forums.
@Sturmgewehre if Sig hopes to have any sales of this rifle, they better get the bugs worked out of it. With the cost of ammo, people are going to shoot what they can afford. Even Hornady is now manufacturing match grade steel cased ammunition. It is just cheaper to produce than the brass cases. A European arms maker should engineer their product to function with whatever ammunition is available as long as it is chambered for that round.
@Sturmgewehre you should have asked them if their product is suppose to be better than a AR-15 then mention AR-15s can shoot steel cased ammo. i could see any company sayin that for reloads but not for wolf ammo. sounds like they just shot themselfs in the foot.
stovepipes like a champ.

Seems to be a very defective bolt carrier group with your particular weapon. Has this issue been tested on more than one 556R rifle?

I have the Sig 556 Swat and use the Sig mag or Magpul, of which I prefer. Probably run close to 5000 rounds through it. Mostly Wolf or American Eagle. And have zero jams. Love the gun! You can run through a magazine as fast as you can pull the trigger. At least that has been my experience with my rifle. A friend has the patrol version, and had equally as good experiences with his. I don't know if you where shooting a factory dud or dud mag in it? maybe I got lucky with mine? Great Gun, though!

Did you ever try adjusting the gas block for that ammo you were using?
Try to see if that makes a difference?

Any suggestions?
snowturbo911 1 month ago
@snowturbo911 First of all, avoid the Tula Wolf. Stick with Barnul or Vymperyl. Second, the DPMS has a tight .223 chamber, in spite of what its markings may say and .223 chambers and steel case ammo does not go well together. My Colt eats steel case like candy.
mdpuckett 1 month ago
That jam at 4:16 was ugly. It looked like a triple feed: one in the chamber, one in the action, and one in the mag about to be stripped off. Nice.

BigJohn308 2 months ago

What do you think?
bigstabby 2 months ago
@bigstabby
The entire 556 line is sketchy at best.. For that money and if a piston system is that important I'd recommend just buying a piston driven AR. If the piston isn't a strong point for you the DI system works just fine, mine runs like a champ and you can mod an AR a hell of a lot more than any Sig 556 to suit your needs.
echoside190 2 months ago
@echoside190 That is a great point. I've been fighting the AR's for a long time, but I'm thinking about giving in.lol
bigstabby 2 months ago
@bigstabby
Plus the never ending amount of stuff you can add to them is fun as hell lol.
echoside190 2 months ago
@echoside190 Yeah, if I get an AR I'll probably get a DI since AR's were designed around it and that's what makes it unique. I kind of don't like the idea of a piston slapped on top of an AR. If I wan't a piston rifle, I got my AK. It'll be nice to experience a whole new platform. I'm pretty much already warmed up to AR's. Just waiting for that gunshow later this month.lol
bigstabby 2 months ago
With my 556, it does not like the Wolf much because of the burn rate of the powder. I have to have it on the dirty setting to operate reliably. The Russians uses a pretty consistantly lousy powder. That could have something to do with part of your malfunctions.
As for the ejection problem, there must be some sort of bolt abnormality going on... All in all, this video will probably scare off any bug sales they hoped for.
dogbert41 3 months ago
@dogbert41 If it can't run on wolf, then there is no point for this rifle to exist. Wolf tends to be the "standard" in 7.62x39 and people shoot 7.62x39 because it's inexpensive, common and runs fine in their AKs. If I want a SIG that needs more expensive brass ammo I'd just buy one in 5.56.

You guys said it! You paid over almost two grand, so why wouldn't you pay for good ammo. That is like buying a new Corvette with a high compression engine that needs premium gas and running the cheep stuff through it; It wont work right and will eventually damage the engine!
willpmack 3 months ago
@willpmack Probably because brass cased ammo is a huge waste of money and the rifle was designed, so Sig claims, to be used by the military. Guess what the military uses in 90% of the countries using 7.62x39? Yup, you guessed it - Russian and Chinese steel cased ammo. It really show a lack of knowledge about the 7.62x39 when you say things like steel cased Russian ammo is "cheap stuff". It's a military standard.

@willpmack
They need to pull their head out of their asses and deliver the goods.
mdpuckett 1 month ago
@mdpuckett You have a valid point but, this gun was not designed to to use that ammo. Try running inexpensive ammo through a Glock 17 or 19 and see what happens; Give you a hint, stove pipes and, jams. Glock makes some of the best stuff you can get. Professionals know to buy the good stuff or reload their own ammo. If your life depended on your weapon functioning wouldn't you buy the best. You want to run Russian ammo buy a Russian gun and shoot all day for cheap and be happy.
willpmack 1 month ago
@willpmack Just don't expect a weapon that is not designed to run that ammo to function flawlessly it is priced on the high side and marketed for the law enforcement and military people who run the high standard ammo. Not ammo that is left over from the cold war. That cheap ammo is not held to any QC standard aside from when it was originally manufactured 20 plus years ago.
willpmack 1 month ago
@willpmack I will give you a hint what happens when I run cheap steel cased ammo in my Glock 17 and 19's....bang....bang..etc. I shoot cases and cases of cheap Russian Steel case ammo thru my Glocks, I attend multiple classes and practice at least 40 time a year. I go thru 9mm like water and Glocks eat steel cased ammo fine.
If Sig was dumb enough to design a rifle that cannot use 98% of the ammo on the market for it, including Russian steel case, they they deserve to choke on the rifle.

Did you bother to contact the manufacturer before you posted this hate fest?
willpmack 3 months ago
@willpmack The overwhelming majority of 7.62x39mm ammo out there is steel cased. So if they designed a rifle chambered for that round that only feeds brass.. They fucked up & made a shitty design that isn't worth the damn near two grand. This thing is a failure, Sig fans can get butthurt & make excuses if they like. But this isn't a lemon, it is a shit design.
Friedstuffsable 3 months ago
@willpmack So, he should buy $1 dollar per round brass cased ammo for this gun? That would be a waste. Other people who have this rifle had problems with brass ammo also. I owned a SIG 556 and it was total garbage, had to be send to SIG many times and still they never fixed it.
semiautoriflelover1 3 months ago 2
Does the 556R have a flat faced bolt with an extractor on it, or is it enclosed like an AR bolt? Also seems like they should have just made the charging handle a solid piece of plastic instead of some sort of rubberglove over a stick.

I was really excited to find Sig made this gun since it takes 7.62x39. I am looking for a great gun to take that load since it is cheaper than 7.62x51. But this video is disappointing.

@Shogun5561776 in my opinion and that just my opinion, reliability of a rifle should't be based on the "ammo quality" because if it comes to the real use of a weapon, u are not guaranteed to have the quality ammo. you shoot what u have, and weapon should function.

I also would point out that this rifle is advertised as being designed for SPEC OPS operating in countries where they would want to use a rifle chambered for the 7.62x39. If this weapon won't shoot steel cased ammo I have to question the validity of their SPEC OPS design claims as well.

Dont anyone dare blame it on the ammo. my RRA has shot all types of .223/5.56 ammo. steel case...reloaded....green tip...HP...not one malfunction. same thing with my AK. not one malfunction.

Purely playing the devil's advocate here, have you tested the 556r with American made, or other brass cartridge ammo. I admit am very skeptical of this rifle, considering the large number of issues you experienced with 4 different specimens, but to be truly fair, I think you ought to try feeding something else.

Adding to my previous comment. Why purchase one of these when you can get a new Arsenal which is at least 200 dollars cheaper and obviously proven?

What a piece of shit.......

I bought an SKS for $180 and it never jams. Just goes to show the quality of make (or lack there of) in firearms made nowadays.
altegarden 11 months ago
@altegarden Back in those days a Mil spec. rifle was a Mil Spec. rifle, you would get the real thing. Now these days due to the laws and "dollars & sense" and more laws, very few Mil spec. firearms make it to the civilian market. Manufacturers have noticed a strong civilian market for these type of firearms so they started to make civilian versions of the real deal and they are milking it all the way to the bank. This 556R would of never made it past its demo stages in any military organization.

I guess your only option is brass cased 5.56 surplus ammo or Wolf Gold ammo that's $18-$20 a box of 20.
IMO, I would sell the gun to some idiot that hasn't caught on yet and take the loss.

@EmptyWalls100
FYI...
The SIG 556R (shown on this video) is not a 5.56 (.223). It is a 7.62X39mm (comm. block ammo) like the AK-47.
madmaxd1 11 months ago
@madmaxd1
Oh, in that case, there are some brass cased 7.62x39 rolling around.
EmptyWalls100 10 months ago
Hard to believe SIG would release this rifle. My SIG556 Classic (made here in the US) have cycled all types of 5.56 & .223 of all types, starting with steel cased surplus all the way to high end match grade ammo without a hiccup. I also own 2 P226 and a P228. One of the P226 and the P228 were made in Germany. The craftsmanship is quickly noticeable by shaking them, The slide of the US made unit (a SIG226-9-TAC) rattles while the older other 2 are completely silent.

@madmaxd1

@Sturmgewehre

@Sturmgewehre same here, i had a gsr that jammed once a mag it was ridiculous. sold that p.o.s and got a hk usp and couldn't be happier.

The 550 rifle's design came from the AKs, with its basic design making it reliable and practical and it is absurd to see it jam like this due to steel casings.
madmaxd1 11 months ago
All this proves is buy an AK if you want to shoot AK ammo. Specifically get an SGL-21 and 2,000 rounds of ammo for the same price as this gun....
reoiv 11 months ago
wooo good thing there's people out there like you who put this stuff out. I so wanted one of these. But the reliability and quality is pathetic. Can't use steel cased ammo? that is retarded. SIG might as well give up the rifle game and just concentrate on QC'ing their pistols. Their rifles are full of fail.
808Arsenal 11 months ago
Thanks for the follow-up. It's worse than I originally thought, and it was bad to begin with... Do ya think Sig's secretely lowering their standards because of financial issues or anything like that? That's what I'm thinking... Just trying to find an explanation for this.
DemonHide 11 months ago
well cross that off the list of shit to buy. I'll keep my ak and just put some more money into it lol

Sturmgewehre 11 months ago
@Sturmgewehre if Sig hopes to have any sales of this rifle, they better get the bugs worked out of it. With the cost of ammo, people are going to shoot what they can afford. Even Hornady is now manufacturing match grade steel cased ammunition. It is just cheaper to produce than the brass cases. A European arms maker should engineer their product to function with whatever ammunition is available as long as it is chambered for that round.
RanchoFiascoMike 11 months ago
@RanchoFiascoMike Currently, Yugo brass ammo is the same price as steel, so you wouldn't go broke shooting brass, but it SHOULD feed steel cases.
esh325 11 months ago
@Sturmgewehre Wow, that's so stupid of sig. Knowing that the majority of 7.62 out there is STEEL cases, why wouldn't they design it feed steel ammo?
esh325 11 months ago
@Sturmgewehre you should have asked them if their product is suppose to be better than a AR-15 then mention AR-15s can shoot steel cased ammo. i could see any company sayin that for reloads but not for wolf ammo. sounds like they just shot themselfs in the foot.
