Yes, I tend to think music competitions can take the spontaneity out of a performance. Because of the enthusiasm of the children, we have often been accused of playing "not to the markings" on a printed sheet of music. I have heard Rondo all Turca played at tempi between 120 and 145 bpm. I guess it is the mood one needs to capture. What I like about Mozart is that he allowed interpretations and cadenzas to be freely invented etc.You did a very good job and I admire anyone who can play instruments
I wasn't trying to be negative. The version on YOUTUBE is played in Gm which I admit is difficult. The children play it in Em which uses natural notes more and is therefore easier. However, in the spirit of things, the piece is a gypsy dance, and if one can play in the correct key, then the interpretation should be achievable. This is a gypsy dance and should do justice to the culture and not be an examination piece. accompanied by piano. Be adventurous and play outside the square.
@veryfussy Also, people put up their music on YOUTUBE to be positively evaluated and some like you, take offence. That is the risk one takes. Myself: I can barely play HOT CROSS BUNS but I do motivate my students to feel the music. BTW, did you look at the site I mentioned? You'll hear a lot of passion that only uninhibited kids can display, or alternatively, only the finest accomplished musicians can muster.
@veryfussy I'm not taking offence, this was for a solo competition and therefore I performed the piece the way the music was arranged. In this particular arrangement, it was in GM and was to be played with a piano accompaniment. I understand what you are saying in that I should be more adventurous with the piece and agree with you that normally it would be better to be outside the box with it. However, since the standards I was being rated on were based on specifically how I performed it
@RoKhazTV based on how it was written, not based on any interpretation that I could've taken on it. I do tend to take "musical liberty" or whatever one may call it when I'm playing a piece just for playing it, but since this competition was judged on how well I was able to perform what the arranger intended, I stuck to following what was on the page rather than focusing on doing justice to the culture. I appreciated your critique though.
Where is the fiery gypsy temperament. It's supposed to be exciting? My 10 year old girls duo play this with conviction and can be heard on showcaseyourmusic and artist name "the marimba belles" They don't hit wrong notes either.
