I think the drums in the original clashing with yours gave the chops a more raw feeling to them. It made them more apparent and tougher, imo.

Sounds like the drums in the sample are conflicting with the drums you laid down, you should try running the sample through a low pass filter to muffle the dum hits in the sample IMO.
