I just wish there was kind of apreciation of this music in my country...or should I say the world. I understand this type of music needs for comprehension, but it is like reading people rather watch some stupid lesbian show on MTV tahn reading a book because reading a book menas thinking, whie the other, well lets just say "blank" so thats why we have come to the time where real musicians have to degrade themselves while shitty, pathetic and nonmusicians are making fortunes out of music.
RIP Jozy, RIP Jaco. Weather Report was THE "drop everything, they're in town" band for us for years and years. I remember taking a buddy who was "folk-music is the only music" to a WR show at the Warner in DC. He said "it changed his life"
Great masterpiece!!! The band sounds so tight, incredible it would be a shock listen to this back in 1976. Weather report still as fresh as a mermaids twat.
Welcome to the world of Jazz percussion. Weird shit like that, off-beat hits and accents, are pretty common. It was on purpose, and it was executed perfectly. Acuna's a fantastic drummer.
barbary coast is jaco's best work, in my opinion, just because it blends in so well with the rest of the band. it's so tonally complex as well, and it feels so mellow.
@tubricant I commented on another Weather Report video about how Alex Acuna's playing on the drumset is unlike any other drummer that I know of. When u take a guy from Peru who usually plays Afro-Cuban style percussion & put him behind the drums you get something very unique in my opinion. As far as I know he doesn't play the kit much at all. On the other comment I mentioned his playing on the song Harlequin. From about 2:56 to the end it's drumming like I've never heard elsewhere. Luv Erskine 2
the bass line slightly resembles or REMINDS me of "Knock me out" a rare outtake of jimis stuff with the blue flames before he became the world reknown Jimi Hendrix. I'm just talking about the feel of the beining a the bass line. Song is awsome and multidimensional like all of Weather Reports stuff.
Jaco Pastorius, is my favorite bassist of all time, and was light years ahead of his time, the whole "weather report" experience, helped shaped my appreciation for all forms of music.
Anybody can tell that this guy Linley Marthe is just a Jaco copy . especially playing with zawinul, he even use the same looking bass that jaco used to play. come on now!
Its like: of course that is a song, its not a ...
and it is live in Montreux!!!
..Barbary Coast from Black market(1976).
Great album!!!
and for those dicks: in original this song is 3:10 long! And in this video, from 2:45 they improvise!!! And jaco is playing his style! I assume jaco is not the best of all,
just go and 'tube' Linley Marthe amazing bass solo!
if there was no jaco then there would be no Linley Marthe. its not just about technical abilty but soul and inovation. also im guessing from the way linley plays that he probably thinks jaco is the best bass player ever
are you saying that linley have no soul and inovation??or that he have it less than jaco:) you can't rank one by this, either he play with soul, or not!
so, you judge by technical abilty(I'm not saying speed), by harmony(like miles davis was the best), by creativity and inovation(did you saw this clip I'm talking about)!
of course jaco was the best in those days, he really did took bass to another level. As linley does it today!
im not saying that linley has no soul or inovation im just saying that jaco completly changed the way people play bass and im just trying to say that i think linley wouldnt be the bass player he is now if jaco wasnt around. and whoever zawinul thinks is the best bass player is a matter of opinion
so my opinion is that linley is the best bass player TODAY! And what you are saying is stupid, becouse there were musicians before jaco and you can hear the roots of jacos style in their playing.
yes, he was made a big jump, but music should evolve!
Zawinul has often introduced his bassist like "the best bassist in th world":he did that for Jaco,Richard Bona,Linley. I've seen Bona,Marthe & M'Bappé Live several times & it's very hard to tell who's the best although on the technical side Linley seems to be stronger but if you also consider the similarities between those players,it becomes obvious they have been influenced by Jaco whereas there are no bassists YET influenced by Linley. We'll see in 10 years...
i don't mean to sound like a dick, but jaco was just using the bassline from that tune in a jam its not like they really played that tune especially since its in a different key
Your right, Jaco used that riff in many a jam, but it's not just Jaco playing it, Shorter and Zawinul are playing it too. Some people complain that they often "recycled" material, especially Jaco, But I really like this stuff, it makes for fantastic jams
yeah, I am a piano player so ive always ignored the percussion. After fiddling with some drums recently I have a new respect for percussion.. Its just that many great musicians are undervalued when you dont have a full grasp of their instrument. Take Jaco for instance. When you dont know the bass he doesnt sound like a virtuoso. But when you familiarize with the bass he becomes a god. Same thing with Manny. When I learned some percussion I have a new respect for him. Also, Zaniwul.
yeah. sometimes its hard for a novice to really appreciate the skill of another musician. Everyone on the weather report is musically amazing. not just jaco
take this from a percussionist though. Keep in mind that percussion is my main instrument in technicality. i still find expression very limited and the things I express through percussion are much more an animalistic side of myself. btw as a bit of background I play tabla, drums, guitar, bass, keyboard, bansuri flute if that helps for credibility.
If you mean this as a general statement about Jaco, then I totally disagree. Anyone with half an ear can hear that "Donna Lee", "Chromatic Fantasy", "Havona" etc. are performed by a virtuoso. However if you're referring to this video alone, then I agree. It takes great dexterity and sense of time to play what Jaco plays here. Not to mention that it was his lines and he put them into a context on the spot. Even to play a transcription of these lines would be challenging.
@pralibaba You're correct, About me not being up to the level of J and J. and Wayne. Why because it was only my second year in the USA, all of the sudden they wanted me to play drums on the WR band, so I said OK.
But now right now if you hear what i'm playing you, will be very impresed, Why because I have mature from a latino musician to a world musicians and even more a Worshiper who can almost play any thing any time, any genre, why because i'm practicing very seriously, how to worship GOD.
