  • This song needs more cowbell! Oh wait...

  • the triplets on bass at 2:41...amazing

  • Is it me or does Wayne Shorter look mad/bored/indifferent or what? How 'bout a smile Wayne?

  • @drewper73 Here's a smile, although a shy one, but hey they are here to jam :D

  • When I hear that train, I know that funky bass line isn't far behind!

  • Where is the date?

  • Super - super- super- super- super- super- super- super- super- super !!!!!!!

  • my favorite song performed by Jaco

  • *gulp!*

  • 0 dislikes....that's fuckin' right. There IS hope for the world.

  • I just wish there was kind of apreciation of this music in my country...or should I say the world. I understand this type of music needs for comprehension, but it is like reading people rather watch some stupid lesbian show on MTV tahn reading a book because reading a book menas thinking, whie the other, well lets just say "blank" so thats why we have come to the time where real musicians have to degrade themselves while shitty, pathetic and nonmusicians are making fortunes out of music.

  • I've been jammin to Jaco and WR since right about the day I was born... I was lucky enough to have funky parents.

  • RIP Jozy, RIP Jaco. Weather Report was THE "drop everything, they're in town" band for us for years and years. I remember taking a buddy who was "folk-music is the only music" to a WR show at the Warner in DC. He said "it changed his life"

  • Jesus is future king of earth, repent for his judgement comes

  • 235 likes, 0 dislikes; that is what i would expect to see :)

  • Great masterpiece!!! The band sounds so tight, incredible it would be a shock listen to this back in 1976. Weather report still as fresh as a mermaids twat.

  • this fuckin master went to my school ^>^

  • @mukisito so wow

  • I had the luck to be there! A fantastic gig!

  • RIP Jaco

  • @9:10-9:20 bass line. perfect. jaco what more can you say

  • badrena is bad muthafucka...

  • Zawinul has a great humour feel. :D I like it. :D

  • the saxofonist is totally wet!

  • great clip

is it a mistake by Alex Acuna on 4:41 ?

  • @kolorolok

by golly... I think it is

  • @kolorolok No dummy ?? learn how to play drums

  • @Jmoscoso1985 : i don't play drums - thats why im asking ...

  • @Jmoscoso1985

Welcome to the world of Jazz percussion. Weird shit like that, off-beat hits and accents, are pretty common. It was on purpose, and it was executed perfectly. Acuna's a fantastic drummer.

  • @MrStrangeSensation I actually don't like his style, he overplays... it must be annoying for jaco.

  • brings me to life

  • OMG! I feel the ecstasy! :)

Joe, Jaco, Wayne - the best!

  • doe's any one know how that big pumpkin called??

    that samba instrument.....

  • It´s called Shekere!

  • @shokodada its an afro-cuban shekere

    brazil has its own

  • barbary coast is jaco's best work, in my opinion, just because it blends in so well with the rest of the band. it's so tonally complex as well, and it feels so mellow.

  • @29573428937 yew man have you checked out the Early Years by Jaco Pastorius?? they are the classics.

  • This is my Weather Report's all-time favorite!

  • man i wish i was born around to see these guys, just about to be 16

  • haha i would be your best friend :D :P

  • The album version always seemed too short. This is the real thing.

  • woww perfect. yhnx Joe and Jaco. and Wayne. and others.

  • el maestro J.P !!!!

  • I love this song and Jacoo!!!

  • my favourite weather report song. its even cooler live

  • So is mine!! Love it!

  • cpayton314: I could not agree more!

  • look at your kids there so evil now look at them all there all ASSHOLES TRUST ME!!!!!!!!!!!!! evil too :( peace and love

  • I'm just glad these guys got together and made this kind of music for us to enjoy. Definitely set the bar for everyone else.

  • I love the Montreaux show!

I aboslutely love Peter Erskine, but seriously, how about Alex Acuna's live chops? The man is a freakin' machine with Weather Report!

  • @tubricant same. Both are great but I like Alex a bit more because of his grooves.

  • @tubricant I commented on another Weather Report video about how Alex Acuna's playing on the drumset is unlike any other drummer that I know of. When u take a guy from Peru who usually plays Afro-Cuban style percussion & put him behind the drums you get something very unique in my opinion. As far as I know he doesn't play the kit much at all. On the other comment I mentioned his playing on the song Harlequin. From about 2:56 to the end it's drumming like I've never heard elsewhere. Luv Erskine 2

  • the bass line slightly resembles or REMINDS me of "Knock me out" a rare outtake of jimis stuff with the blue flames before he became the world reknown Jimi Hendrix. I'm just talking about the feel of the beining a the bass line. Song is awsome and multidimensional like all of Weather Reports stuff.

  • weather report is very very awesome and fantastic you love them or you hate them

    thank's god i love them since 1975

  • Thank you! Thank you for the vid! I have this always playing in my car. Dr Ruths Rifle

  • what a fucking bassline!!

  • Jaco Pastorius, is my favorite bassist of all time, and was light years ahead of his time, the whole "weather report" experience, helped shaped my appreciation for all forms of music.

  • I couldn't agree more, listening to his own music and that with Weather Report, it's only make me appreciate all music more!

  • Jaco had the grooviest bass licks for sure.

  • Big Jaco Pastorius

    I like

  • Alex fucks up like 3 times and Jaco is there, bouncing like a motherfucker!

  • yes yes yes yes yes yes

  • They break into "come on come over"

  • Groovy virtuosity, yes, but the main point might be that this sound is so full of life. Another reason why they became immortal.

Feel free to check out my jazz blog, if you like -- for link see my profile.

    Thanks so much. Cheers, Brewster

  • Anybody can tell that this guy Linley Marthe is just a Jaco copy . especially playing with zawinul, he even use the same looking bass that jaco used to play. come on now!

  • um, if you're referring to the bass player in this video - he looks like Jaco, because he IS Jaco

  • Lol, he didn't refer to this video. Take a closer look at who he replied to.

  • You'r an idiot - don't be that way your entire life

  • Last 3 mins was as good as it gets--legendary. They knew it, too.

  • Viva La Jaco !!!

  • Weather Report was such a wonderful group.

  • Still insanely awesome!

  • I think my face is going to break if I keep smiling so much. :-)

  • This is possibly the coolest bass line ever

  • Another good reason to keep breathing.

  • jaco,and joe, R.I.P , your music lives on!!!

  • wow, for about 3 minutes there they are as tight as a band can get...yikes...scary stuff.

  • I take that back. Acuna was great. I stand corrected.

  • This was the band that got me into Jazz. Now i'm hooked

  • They all kicks ass... Wonderful track!

  • I like when they bust into "come on come over" for a bit. FUNKY

  • is that a song and where is that?

  • are you fall down from mars:)

  • no, I've never heard of that song!

  • sorry, I miss understand your question.

Its like: of course that is a song, its not a ...

and it is live in Montreux!!!

    ..Barbary Coast from Black market(1976).

    Great album!!!

and for those dicks: in original this song is 3:10 long! And in this video, from 2:45 they improvise!!! And jaco is playing his style! I assume jaco is not the best of all,

just go and 'tube' Linley Marthe amazing bass solo!

jaco was the best in those days, not today!

    peace

  • if there was no jaco then there would be no Linley Marthe. its not just about technical abilty but soul and inovation. also im guessing from the way linley plays that he probably thinks jaco is the best bass player ever

  • are you saying that linley have no soul and inovation??or that he have it less than jaco:) you can't rank one by this, either he play with soul, or not!

so, you judge by technical abilty(I'm not saying speed), by harmony(like miles davis was the best), by creativity and inovation(did you saw this clip I'm talking about)!

of course jaco was the best in those days, he really did took bass to another level. As linley does it today!

  • im not saying that linley has no soul or inovation im just saying that jaco completly changed the way people play bass and im just trying to say that i think linley wouldnt be the bass player he is now if jaco wasnt around. and whoever zawinul thinks is the best bass player is a matter of opinion

  • so my opinion is that linley is the best bass player TODAY! And what you are saying is stupid, becouse there were musicians before jaco and you can hear the roots of jacos style in their playing.

yes, he was made a big jump, but music should evolve!

  • and the conclusion of our discussion is:

    god damn, they were good!:)

  • o, and also great master zawinul said that linley marthe is the best bass player!:)

  • Zawinul has often introduced his bassist like "the best bassist in th world":he did that for Jaco,Richard Bona,Linley. I've seen Bona,Marthe & M'Bappé Live several times & it's very hard to tell who's the best although on the technical side Linley seems to be stronger but if you also consider the similarities between those players,it becomes obvious they have been influenced by Jaco whereas there are no bassists YET influenced by Linley. We'll see in 10 years...

  • exactly, music evolves. and from time to time it came up with a great men who takes steps ahead(like the bend:) and we call him genius!

well, as long as there are musicians to play some good music, I'm satisfied!

    he he:) see you!

  • You're really splitting hairs when it comes to the quality of the bassists you named.

I still dig jaco best beacuse of his compositions...incredible composer

  • i don't mean to sound like a dick, but jaco was just using the bassline from that tune in a jam its not like they really played that tune especially since its in a different key

  • Your right, Jaco used that riff in many a jam, but it's not just Jaco playing it, Shorter and Zawinul are playing it too. Some people complain that they often "recycled" material, especially Jaco, But I really like this stuff, it makes for fantastic jams

  • no you sound like a dick

  • i suppose its a matter of perception

  • Joe the Pianist

  • There aren't enough stars to rate this clip!

  • fucking best track personally

  • I'm so happy to see Jaco at his best !

  • Alex Acuna is a kick ass drummer!

He's played on like 5000 records...

He thing is percussion. Probaly the best in the music bizness.

That conga guy is killer too.

I decided I wanna be a conga player, and a bookie. And a porno star. Wait a minute, I already am.

    Nevermind...

    taxiboysdrummer

  • but the band was out of his class.

  • Dnot get me wrong, Acuna was good.. but he was not at the level of Jaco or Zaniwul when it comes to music

  • You don't know what you say.

  • totally wrong dude.

  • you're right

  • yeah, I am a piano player so ive always ignored the percussion. After fiddling with some drums recently I have a new respect for percussion.. Its just that many great musicians are undervalued when you dont have a full grasp of their instrument. Take Jaco for instance. When you dont know the bass he doesnt sound like a virtuoso. But when you familiarize with the bass he becomes a god. Same thing with Manny. When I learned some percussion I have a new respect for him. Also, Zaniwul.

  • totally right dude.

  • yeah. sometimes its hard for a novice to really appreciate the skill of another musician. Everyone on the weather report is musically amazing. not just jaco

  • take this from a percussionist though. Keep in mind that percussion is my main instrument in technicality. i still find expression very limited and the things I express through percussion are much more an animalistic side of myself. btw as a bit of background I play tabla, drums, guitar, bass, keyboard, bansuri flute if that helps for credibility.

  • @pralibaba

If you mean this as a general statement about Jaco, then I totally disagree. Anyone with half an ear can hear that "Donna Lee", "Chromatic Fantasy", "Havona" etc. are performed by a virtuoso. However if you're referring to this video alone, then I agree. It takes great dexterity and sense of time to play what Jaco plays here. Not to mention that it was his lines and he put them into a context on the spot. Even to play a transcription of these lines would be challenging.

  • @pralibaba You're correct, About me not being up to the level of J and J. and Wayne. Why because it was only my second year in the USA, all of the sudden they wanted me to play drums on the WR band, so I said OK.

But now right now if you hear what i'm playing you, will be very impresed, Why because I have mature from a latino musician to a world musicians and even more a Worshiper who can almost play any thing any time, any genre, why because i'm practicing very seriously, how to worship GOD.

  • Absolutely amazing... funky to the very end!

  • i love the closeup on their faces. Jacos left hand had to be killing him after 9 minutes of that

  • @th1nk21 In the full video you can see him shake his hand between songs like he's having cramps or something, espicially after Portrait of Tracy

  • Got the water boiling.

  • This is super fantastic - truly funky. I loved every second of it.

  • weather's report masterpiece

  • Amazing Version!

  • Do not fucking question Zawinul.

  • Yeah, what is this thing about Jaco everytime I hear people talk about Weather Report? It's a BAND. And organic thing. And Zawinul is absolutely the greatest.

  • Although it often seems taboo to question Joe Zawinuls tone, I do know what you mean. I've only recentley come to enjoy what Zawinul did in Weather Report (being a huge Jaco fan I've been lstening to Weather Report for years now), give it some time and I'm sure you'll be able to appreciate the man.

  • It´s so groovy I wanna tare down a fucking brick wall with my bare hands. YEAH!!!

  • Hahhaha, that's such a cool association

  • Man, what a great song.

  • Fucking epic, so damn good.

  • EPIC

  • hahaha

  • I gave you thumbs because you need to get a life

  • EPIC!

  • BEST SONG EVER

  • Ahhhhhhhhhhh! Had to take a deep breath after THAT! Edgy...yet mysterious! Sound man did an awsome job, video guy too, he didn't know Jaco would be splittig so soon;-) you could hear each and every instrument! thank you thank. The rhythm section, hmmmmm! hmm! Can you imagine the band in heaven;-o with Jaco,

Marvin, Buddy, Billie, Ray etc??? whoo-hoo!

  • They show so little of Jaco, I guess the video crew didn't now that Jaco was more than just a passing bass player at the time, and would become a legend ...

  • oh he knew.... but it's not a jaco pastorius performance. its a weather report show at the montreux jazz festival. and weather report is a legendary band. plus you can find jaco's finger funk anywhere...

  • This the most important song of Jaco.

    This song IS Jaco.

    Rest in Peace, my friend.

  • Le daría un hijo a Jaco :$

  • Around the 2:00 mark the band goes into a groove very similar to "Come On , Come Over" from Jaco's 1976 solo album. Jaco is playing the bassline to that song at least at that mark.

  • he used that riff all over the place, it's on a stack of recordings,

    it's his bread and butter!! : )

  • when does alex use the double bass

  • what?

  • oh he has double bass drums, didn't see that, never mind

  • Damn he was sexy & groovy at that time!

  • who

  • probably jaco?

  • hey, it could be anybody

  • All of them

  • haha, true true

  • this song r00lz.

  • the breathtaking quality of the bass solos!

the benevolence of the lyrical complexities!

when does the Lord's hand stop raining gifts?

  • Wow!

  • INCREIBLE
