I remember Gil DeFerran in 2000 at California with the Reynard/Honda clocking in at 241.428mph. I was in Fontana for that race just a year after Moore's crash and these cars were absolutely flying.
If I remember correctly, nearly half of the engines detonated in a HUGE way but they sounded like music from the Gods just before the smoke :-)
@Lock007i I agree. While I remain optimistic about 2012 and the momentum toward new technologies, this Penske IndyCar epitomized what IndyCar was then: innovation, cutting edge technology, gutsy racing, ridiculous speed, and much more.
@captainjosue yes I totally agree, those Penske, Lola, Reynard CART days epitomized everything that was great about racing and competition. There was a great sense of urgency to follow CART then because it was so competitive and exciting. This current 'spec' Indycar racing has absolutely no urgency of following; it's dumbed down, completely lacking in innovation and desperately missing chassis competition. Indycar must morph into CART for open wheel racing to be great again!!
@Lock007i "Indycar must morph into CART for open wheel racing to be great again" In term's of Chassis and engine competition yes i agree but in this current economic climate and Sponsors not willing to fork over 10s of millions on just tech alone are long gone and may never come back. indycar will do what it must to survive (Semi-spec Racing) so it does not repeat the mistakes of the twice bankrupt CART.
@captainjosue I miss those day's as well,but i do look forward to Engine competition again in 2012 and the Chassis Aero kit competition in 2013,so it's not all doom and gloom;)
