Just one more redundant overpriced echo foot pedal. Most of this stuff gets lost on lower bass frequencies anyway, pretty much a worthless toy for bass guitar. Even for electric guitar it seems like more of the same old thing. There is such a ridiculous proliferation of effects devices on the market that it is starting to become numbing to the point of total boredom. Don't get me wrong I love a good effect chain but it really has gotten way out of control over the last several years especially.
I don't know who the guy on the video pitching Echolution to Lesh is on the video but he's definitely the best booth responsable that I saw on any NAMM video and I hope that Pigtronix hung on to him tight ;-|
What's hard for some people to understand is that, while Phil doesn't sound that great solo, he's an absolutely fantastic bassist in context. I realize that people will point to 8.13.75, but, generally, Phil's solos are unremarkable. What IS ABSOLUTELY remarkable is his sense of counterpoint. He has one of the weirdest, and most interesting, approaches to the bass. I'd compare his greatness to Tony Levin, Bootsy Collins, Scott LaFaro or any other great innovator in the instrument.
I've yet to meet anybody who has experienced 'Phil' live say anything other than that he's an amazing bass player and more importantly, amazing musician. Phil is a classically trained musician who from day one never approached his instrument like his peers. He was inspired by symphonic and jazz music, rather than by other bass players. He provides melodic counterpoints to the other lead musicians that he plays with, and is one of the most adept improvisers i've ever seen. Phil rules!!!!!!!!
I love his use of syncopations. I love how sometimes he will play a line that is so unique it makes your ears light up thinking "wow that was a neat little funky line!" His style fits in so well with the lazy, funky GD sound. Phil is a musical hero to me.
poor lesh man, one of the most underrated bassists here, just checkin out the NAMM show, and out of nowhere, he's attacked by some dude trying to score some airtime with the lesh meister....
Also: who gives a shit. His style of playing suits his style of music. Music is judged by how good it sounds, not by technical prowess. This is not a sport. Anyone who tries to say otherwise is an idiot, and if they are a musician they most likely lack any true sense of music.
"World class" confuses music with competitive sports. Folks like music not because it's "good" but because it recycles their own emotions back to them. I went through my bass superchops phase w/Stanley Clarke parts (on upright) back before Return To Forever went electric, and I still love McLaughlin, but nowadays I'd rather listen to Phil. He brings sensibility from late 50's - early 60's jazz, as well as classical generally and J.S. Bach specifically, to nominally rock music.
Phil, easily one of the most recognizable, un-imitatable, and original bass players in the world. As for Oneness100 and his willful ignorance, haven't the rest of you learned not to feed the trolls ? Phil can drop some sick bombs. My buddy and I were on our way to the opening Dead show in Greensboro and listening to some epic Dark Star from back in '73... He doesn't play like anyone else, in that he's a very melodic player, but when it's time to kick ass, he does it and does it royally.

craigdamage, what are you a pot smoking, LSD taking, alcohol drinking burnout like a lot of other deadheads? Give me a break. Phil was never a master bass player, the only reason why he got the gig is because Jerry Garcia couldn't get anyone else. I know there are plenty of teen agers that can play as good as Phil can. The guy has no skills to play a masterful solo. Oh, I don't collect gay porn, you must be confused. I don't play bass, but I know what one sounds like.
I am not even a Dead fan. I found this vid looking for "pigtronix"
I am however a professional bassist. You made a stupid and amateurish comment and I simply handed your ass to you for it. He is playing bass EXACTLY how I would through thick delay.
Slowly and with plenty decay. Do you think the bassline to Pink Floyd "One of these Days" lacks skills too? You are a stupid drooling mongoloid.
Did Phil play the bass line for the Pink Floyd song? I like Pink Floyd. I am not exactly a groupie, but at least their bass player had some skills.... If one knows how to use effects, I appreciate that, but when someone like Phil plays it, it just sounds like an amateur. Sorry, I am not into Phil. i think the guy hasn't really learned how to play the thing and he hasn't played anything that I can drool over. Sorry for having an opinion.
You said: "Go take some lessons Phil, it sounds like a bunch of bull$hit" This was your original idiotic comment which is an affront to those of us who don't have our heads lodged in our asses.
The very definition of "amateur" amongst real musicians is dumb kids who stupidly think that being able to "shred" is what makes a pro.
Craigdamage, I am older than you are and what makes a great player is someone that has good technique, plays solid bass lines, and when soloing they actually say something when they solo. Someone that holds down the bottom end and plays a deep groove. Phil doesn't hold down the bottom end, doesn't know how to groove that well, his technique is not that good. To me, Phil Lesh sounds like an amateur.

Yeah, I grew up in their home town area 30+ years ago. I used to practice to the Europe 70 album when it came out when I was 13. i got bored playing to it after a couple of months. It was easy to learn how to play. it wasn't challenging for me. Some of the melodies are cool, but the musicianship was never really inspiring. Most of the players in the band, to me, are mediocre players. Sorry, but that's my opinion. I just think that Phil is completely overrated as a bassist.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Plus, i am just not into their whole drug thing. I think it is a waste of time to get involved with drugs and I think that people need to get into higher quality musicianship if they want to learn their instrument. There are tons of players out there that aren't famous that are worth listening to, regardless of what instrument they play. Just because someone has sold millions of albums doesn't mean that they are great musicians. I think too many people drank or are drinking the wrong kool aid.
There are plenty of guys that know how to shred, but playing fast is not everything either, but "shredding" just shows technique. Some shredders don't say anything when they "shred", but the players I listed know how to play fast, but they actually say something when they solo. Look at Paul McCartney, he plays bass, but he plays fairly simple stuff. I wouldn't categorize him as a expert bass player, but more of songwriter/singer/artist that plays bass. Get over it.
@craigdamage I don't really care what you think, he was never trained to play the bass properly, he was told by Jerry Garcia, whom is a guitar player. I don't take Phil seriously. Go smoke some more weed, or better yet maybe you should stop and take some time listening to world class players rather than drug infused music.
@Oneness100 what the fuck is your problem you retarded child? I handed your ignorant ass to you two years ago! It has taken you two years to come up with this?
You have got to stop embarrassing yourself. You want so badly to assume that I am a drug fueled hippy--I fucking explained to you in clear detail that I don't even like Lesh or the Dead two years ago. I am smart enough to know that by definition anyone who has appeared on 100+ recordings and toured is "world class"
@craigdamage You seem to like to swear in public forums. Boy, someone pissed on your Cheerios. Ring
World Class means something different to me than it does to you. Phil Lesh has not played on any albums for which is deemed a album with world class bass playing, at let not in my book. Phil. was taught by a guitar player and the only reason why he was in the band is no one else wanted to play with Jerry Garcia.
@craigdamage Since you mentioned what it takes to be world class, the I guess you think Gene Simmons is also world class. I think KISS has sold more albums and have played in front of more people and KISS still tours. Album sales does NOT quantify someone as a world class player. let me know when Phil gets a call from a jazz legend to play on THEIR album. I don't dimeola, McLaughlin, Corea, McCoy Tyner, or even Scofield is going to give Phil a call to play on THEIR albums, he isn't good enough
Whomever the Pigrtonix guy doing the demo is better player than Phil is. Phil is just a famous, rich guy that made it famous because Jerry Garcia couldn't get anyone else to play with the Dead. They were just a bunch of drug addicts with cool gear. Garcia could play, but the others were mediocre players as far as I am concerned. :-)
know what man it kills me to agree with you. not quite as harshley as you put it phill certainly could keep a groove but how come after 40 years of jamming hes not doing way better stuff and i fuckin love the dead...like religiously, but ive only been playing bass a little over a year and im starting to think technically i am betetr. im not half the song writer or creative mind he is but i have never seen him do anything as you put it"that i can drool over"
I know. How many songs did Phil write by himself. Most of the melodies were written by Jerry and Bob and lyrics by Hunter. I think Phil was just part of the process and only got partial songwriting credit. I am not 100% familiar with every song, I just think Phil really didn't have that much to do with the songwriting, only at a minimalist level. A keyboard player knew one of the Dead's earlier keyboard players and he said his chops got worse AFTER he started to play with the Dead.
If you play with better players, and you focus, your chops get better. Everyone goes up or down to the level of the group as a whole over time. The unfortunate thing about players that don't always learn new things will eventually stay at one level and then start to degrade. This phenomenon happens with a lot of rock players, since they limit their musical growth. Jazz, classical, indian classical are three areas where the musicians usually get better over time and they keep their chops.
You're really not listening the right way if thats the way you feel. The beauty of Phil is his complete unpredictability. Sure, he doesn't demonstrate raw chops too often, but in a song context, I don't know of many bass players who have a more precises ear for changing harmony and spontaneous melodies. His role is not to hold down the groove, there are two drummers for that, Phil has complete control over the mood and feel of a song.
@philsteakfreeman And how can you validate your statement? Is that your opinion or is it fact? I can't stand Phil Lesh's playing. I think the guy is not a REAL bass player. he can't play outside the Grateful Dead drug invested BS playing... I wouldn't buy a Grateful Dead album because of Phil Lesh's playing and I don't think many bass are doing the same thing.
@Oneness100 u ignorant motherfucker! Infested is spelled w/ an f not a v! U r obviously a cop or a Republican! Real musicians know Phil could easily "play" in any band he wants 2!
@ellyk82791 Cop? No, not a cop, nor am I republican. I am actually a registered democrat, but I am choosing not to vote for either party anymore. Let me know when Phil is hired by a world class jazz player to play on THEIR album that doesn't include GD music. Whatever band Phil plays in, they eventually play old dead songs because that's all he really knows how to play. Sorry if I peed in your cheerios. Maybe you should spark up a joint and get high, that might calm you down.
He is playing slow and modestly so he can hear the effect. A dumb spastic fag-tard like you would jack off all over the fretboard and thus ruin the sound just like the drooling amateur loser you are. Phil has been a world touring professional musician for 40+ years and recorded more records than are in your gay-porn dvd collection.
@craigdamage Wow, how much weed have you smoked? It certainly is affecting your thought process. Go listen to a bass payer that takes their instrument seriously and can actually play the thing. Phil is a joke. Some people realize this when they stop smoking weed and listen to others that can play.
Just one more redundant overpriced echo foot pedal. Most of this stuff gets lost on lower bass frequencies anyway, pretty much a worthless toy for bass guitar.

I am smart enough to know that by definition anyone who has appeared on 100+ recordings and toured is "world class"
craigdamage 1 year ago
@craigdamage You seem to like to swear in public forums. Boy, someone pissed on your Cheerios. Ring
World Class means something different to me than it does to you. Phil Lesh has not played on any albums for which is deemed a album with world class bass playing, at let not in my book. Phil. was taught by a guitar player and the only reason why he was in the band is no one else wanted to play with Jerry Garcia.
Oneness100 1 year ago

Oneness100 3 years ago
If you play with better players, and you focus, your chops get better. Everyone goes up or down to the level of the group as a whole over time. The unfortunate thing about players that don't always learn new things will eventually stay at one level and then start to degrade. This phenomenon happens with a lot of rock players, since they limit their musical growth. Jazz, classical, indian classical are three areas where the musicians usually get better over time and they keep their chops.
Oneness100 3 years ago
You're really not listening the right way if thats the way you feel. The beauty of Phil is his complete unpredictability. Sure, he doesn't demonstrate raw chops too often, but in a song context, I don't know of many bass players who have a more precises ear for changing harmony and spontaneous melodies. His role is not to hold down the groove, there are two drummers for that, Phil has complete control over the mood and feel of a song.

@Oneness100
This ranks as THE #1 most ignorant comment I've ever read on the Internet.
philsteakfreeman 1 year ago
@philsteakfreeman And how can you validate your statement? Is that your opinion or is it fact? I can't stand Phil Lesh's playing. I think the guy is not a REAL bass player. he can't play outside the Grateful Dead drug invested BS playing... I wouldn't buy a Grateful Dead album because of Phil Lesh's playing and I don't think many bass are doing the same thing.
Oneness100 1 year ago
@Oneness100 u ignorant motherfucker! Infested is spelled w/ an f not a v! U r obviously a cop or a Republican! Real musicians know Phil could easily "play" in any band he wants 2!
ellyk82791 1 year ago
@ellyk82791 Cop? No, not a cop, nor am I republican. I am actually a registered democrat, but I am choosing not to vote for either party anymore. Let me know when Phil is hired by a world class jazz player to play on THEIR album that doesn't include GD music. Whatever band Phil plays in, they eventually play old dead songs because that's all he really knows how to play. Sorry if I peed in your cheerios. Maybe you should spark up a joint and get high, that might calm you down.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Go take some lessons Phil, it sounds like a bunch of bull$hit.
Oneness100 3 years ago
You are a fucking clueless imbecile.

Reeeetard. Go get a life. So little you understand. You're like a pimple on a gnat's ass.
