  • overkill hope you are creating IMAX videos of the moon!

  • what type of raid card did you use?

  • Samsung harddisks? :( I had a lot of bad experience with them, not very silent a lot of the time too.....

  • windows server sucks!!!! FreeNAS FTW!!!!!!!!!!!

  • does a server need much processor power?

  • @duluxdoggy Not one like this, no. This is just a personal storage server.

  • Hi, I'm a new subscriber, in need of some advice on how to protect my home server, home computers and external hard drives from power cuts, I've been looking into back-up generators but I'm due to move home early next year.

I've had two 2TB external hard drives fail due to multiple (3) power outages already.

  • @1990banks Look up UPS devices.

  • Dude make a linux server, not a windows server.... if you wan't learn someting go linux and virtualization.

  • 12 terabytes? Are you running a corporate it enterprise from your basement?

  • windows sucks -.-

  • I am wondering when will you come back to Server 2008, TTL. I love your hardware reviews but I have not seen a follow up since you created this.

  • nice

  • are all english peoples on high?:D

  • Just curious as to why you chose Windows Server? :)

  • Next Video: How long does it take to copy 12 tb of data from point a to point b

  • lol 12tb is nothing :) I got 31tb at the moment :D!

  • very nice work,, i have a smaller version server , running the win server 2008 r2 x64,, it a NAS and backup server on the home network.. i really would like to see what type of features and roles you have found to be optimal for this job , i wanna be like you at least in my server os, just not as much hardware,, thanks alot!! links are cool too ;)

  • Very impressive. Looking forward to see how you sort it all out.

  • You will NEVER use all 12 TB. Why would anybody need that much space or redundancy unless you are an artist or engineer?

  • That is a really awesome NAS/Storage server mate. Atm I'm just running a Synology ds210j. At one point I had two servers with a buddy but we decided that It was pretty much overkill in Power and maintenance was pretty pricey for us aswell :/

    But seriously! AWESOME SETUP

  • i think you meant 2gb through the network card, not 2mb :P

  • from which website do you purchase your goods ??? :D

  • Thats a really nice build. I just built a Linux atom server with 3 x 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F3 in a raid 5, its only a month or so old and one of the F3's has died already! Looking forward to the rest of the videos on the server build :)

  • Sounds like a nice setup!

    Great vid

  • What network card are you using?

  • you should get a really flat monitor and take it out of it's casing and mount it to on to one of the sides of your server so you can dedicate it to monitoring the server usage and proformance levels while saving tons of space.

  • Looks good. You could, however get more RAM, try ESXi 4.1, and make it into a big virtual machine. You can then stick Windows Server 2008 RC 2 on one of the VMs and then setup other machine setup's on it doing different roles. I've just done this to one of my rigs. The rig was running Windows 7 with VMWare Workstation 7 with loads of VMs. I took aware the resource hog of Windows 7 (although I love Win7) and installed ESXi 4.1, on a SD card :) works great.

  • hey bro ? for im doin a920 build today my ? is i currently have a corsairhx620 powering my a9400 rig thats goin to the wife and im getting a hx650 for free but not sure if i should keep the 620 in her rig and use the hx650 for mine or keep the 620im thinking take the 650 for myself and give her the 620 what ya think brother

  • @asus3571 keep the hx650 for you :)

  • @asus3571 alright bro i noticed in the specs at newegg that the hx650 had a ix8pin eps12v connector but upon closer inspection today i noticed no single 8pin there were 2x4pin eps12v's am i missing something why in the hell would they do that

  • Thanks for the video. I liked the one about the Intel I5 760 Quad Core as well. It help me decide which processor to buy.

I have a question and I really need your help.

I'm building a new system and I chose the same MOBO here, the Asus P7H57D-V Evo, and the Intel I5-760. My problem is that the G.SKILL Dual Channel Kits (Part No.: F3-12800CL7D-4GBECO, 1.35 v, 7- 8-7-24) are not listed as "qualified" or compatible to work with the P7H57D-V Evo.

Have you ever had any problem with it?

  • @Batavo666 no mate no problems at all. I manually set everything up in the bios anyways. But it wont stop it from working ;)

  • hx60w is a bad choice for a system which will be on 24/7... only 80+ bronze, a 460w fan less or the newer 520 or something watt Seasonic GOLD psu's would be way better value.

  • hi question

abiyt the evo motherboard, is it possialbe to have a duel screen output both at 1080p with out using a graphics card.

and can the hdmi port on the evo motherboard also support sound to the monitor used with a hdmi input with internat speakers.

    thanx

  • @17sTHEM17 The audio bit yes, but Im unsure about dual screens tbh, if I get the chance I will try and get another screen on mine.

  • Thanks for the informative video...I'm trying to put together a Server 2008 R2 build myself. Can anyone tell me how I can tell what motherboards work with R2? I'm eyeing the MSI 890GXM-G65, but I don't see any R2 drivers on the site - same with the Asus boards I'm considering (like the M4A785TD-V EVO). Can I just use Windows 7 drivers, or what?

  • @porkstamina Just use the windows 7 drivers for the motherboard dude ;)

  • @TimeToLiveCustoms Hey, thanks a lot for the fast reply :) I was reading that the 7 drivers worked but sometimes you needed to "trick" R2 into taking them.

  • Pause exactly at 0:09 . Tom you look pretty happy about that server!

  • What version of Windows server 08 you have?

  • позер

  • What antivirus software do you use? have you set up a client/server system like Symantec Endpoint Protection?

  • 12TB; I love it. The RAM? CPU? Overkill if I may say. I would of went with an atom and bought even more hard drives.

  • My feedback? 12TB is really insane ;-).

  • Have you considered using Windows Home Server instead? it may fit your needs better than a full server operating system.

  • @gamerguy12345 WHS is 32bit only so no good for me fella.

  • @TimeToLiveCustoms ahh, i see.

  • @TimeToLiveCustoms

WHS will be updated later this year.

The working name for it right now is "Vail"

It is built on Win Server 2008 R2 and it is 64-bit only.

But the "full version" of Win 2008 Server R2 has a lot more functionality, of course.

  • @The64BitGeek If that does get released then Ill build a mini server just for videos on that ;)

  • 12TB wholey shit

  • Great build, 12TB is a whole lot of hd porn, lol

    Great Job

  • Dude, you should def do a overview on how to set all these up on a thread, or a video. It'll help us networking dummy's :D

  • seven or windows sever ?

  • HaHA dude your bare happpy !!!!

  • 12tb, blooming hell!!!

big thanks to noctua eh, thoughs fans are quite expensive but damn good.

haha silly storage server, S3 ;D

  • awesome, server looks great. really glad to see your getting back into builds.

  • #FTW Build Some RIGS #OMG Tiny Tom #LOL

  • cant wait for your rig mate

  • looks awesome but I have trouble filling up my 1.5 TB. I don't know what you're gonna do with 12. Might as well get 12 2TB drives. That's what I call future proof lol

  • u seem much happier in this video, i think its because ur doing ur own personal work, good for you TTL

  • Sick project! Always wanted to do something like this myself.

  • why u need 12tb?

  • lookin good :) thanks for the vid man!

  • I will be really intrestedto see how this comes out :) BTW how much was the RAID card?

  • @TheLittleWorldofGaz I didnt pay for it but they retail from £700 - £800

  • @TimeToLiveCustoms

Do you know how much power the raid controller consumes? I am building

    I3 530

    4 gb DDR3 Corsair 1333 mhz ram

    LG Blu ray drive

    GIGABYTE GA-H55N-USB3 H55 S-1156 MINI-ITX

Some SEAGATE BARRACUDA 5900.12 LP 1.5TB drives

Intel X25-V 40 gb ssd (for OS - Ubuntu Server 10.4)

As the MB only have 4 ports, i was thinking about getting a raid controller when i want to exceed 4 HDD's. Any thoughts if i can use PicoPsu?

  • @Anima87 Pico wont power all those HDD's dude.

  • Kinda overkill for a NAS don't you think?

  • @Delus1on77 It's good for backing up all the videos he does I guess.

  • hehe "Look at tht lot" classic

  • If you rly need to have win on the box..try running XPs on it. I found it much more stabile (uptime).

  • Bloody hell tom, all that storage!!O.o i like it:-D

  • fucking hell tom all that storage!!O.o

  • Shoulda just got 6 2TB hdds ;) Much simpler

  • @RyanADillon Less bandwith

  • @insanegammer109 If you use that argument then 12 x 2TB hdds... Twice the capacity and same bandwidth.

  • @RyanADillon

you mean 12 2TB SAS drives

  • @svndgrs The HDDs he used here are only SATA2. Not SAS.

  • @RyanADillon

SAS drives have better error correction, and a lot of other nice features that lend them to large raid arrays and server use; hence the 1up style suggestion

  • @svndgrs 12,12 tb actually! :D

  • I don't understand servers at all. What exactly is your server used for? ( in english)

  • thats brutal...nice going

  • Have Fun.

  • Amazing video man. Im very happy I subed to you :)

  • looks good :) would like to see the case with all them icy box in :)

  • great vid ttl - in subsequent videos could you cover the cabling system for this raid card - looks like there are fan out cables and extenders. I'd like to see how that will work with 12 drives. thanks!

  • Hi like your channel some very good info on hardware my self just in the middle of building storage server I am looking to build on FreeNAS server software using ZFS file system which has some great reviews also using GB switch & cards supporting jumbo frame. Using cat6 cabling through out my home network Them using the same file system ZFS file system using open Solaris as dedicated mysql server. Gateway firewall box with pfSense and using simple load balancing across 3 Ubuntu Apache servers.

  • I wish Noctua sorted me out with those fans too xD ,that shit is expensive, 20 quid just for a single 120mm fan oO

  • Wow nice im actually going to be building my own server when i get some bits nowhere near this though 2 x 2.6ghz p4 xeons

Enough for a file server for me :) and pretty decent seeming i got 6 xeons for £2 :P thats a shitload of drives how much did they cost i bet over £800 thats about the money i would spend on my main system

  • Badass chair! Looks comfy. Oh yeah, nice server too;)

  • 12TB .. Sweet!

    Beats my 3.75TB xP

  • lol i was planning on getting a 4tb home server for the new windows vail but this rapes that

  • I like i like lol after all of the vids you still get excited about parts.I like that.

  • You should look into Unix especially if your planning for this server to be your firewall, dhcp server, and fileserver...

Unix will blitz through all these tasks with no problems! As well Linux is so stable, with a distribution like Debian, FreeBSD or Ubuntu you won't have any problems! Specially from data corruption caused by the operating system. I know its a massive learning curve but its well worth it and experience with Unix is very useful!

  • @aran384 Once 2008R2 is set up and working I can always do a Linux VM, but I think I need to get my head round this one first!

  • love your vids mate

  • @canvoodoo cheers fella :D

  • will the i3 withstand all those HDD?????

  • @H3lloSE Yeah windows will only see 1 massive drive, and the dual core should be able to hadle the data transfers.

  • @TimeToLiveCustoms it sucks :/ i prefer having every drive for itself. But if youre on sata, how come its gonna look like 1 big drive?

  • @H3lloSE Because of the raid. Also because of raid 6 if a HDD dies I can just replace it and the raid card will rebuild the lost data.

  • We have just installed Sever 2008 R2 on the new server at work, going from are old server the performance was unbelievable, network has almost doubled in size as well (added 300 Pc's) so we have 1 server for all out user accounts and shizz, and the new one transferring files over the Intranet.

  • Why didn't you just go with a Drobo Elite as a Server from Data Robotics 16TB and up to 32TB. best redundancy protection on the market, 2 drives can fail simultaneously and you still won't lose your data.

If you get a chance check out the Drobo Line...I have the Drobo FS and I have to admit it is the best external drive I have ever used.

    Cheers

    LazyMan :-)

  • @WestCoastMods Ill be running Raid6 anyways so Ill also have 2 drives in parity. I can loose 2 drives and just remove the faulty drive and the raid will rebuild all the data.

  • @Merts478 Yeah I know fella, it was late too. I will look into getting one.

  • Loool look at that hard drive box :D !

great video Tom , really needed a few ideas for building up my own nas storage using a pc.

  • @b0ss6769 Be plenty more Videos, Ill try and explain as much as I can.

  • would that cooler get an ok overclock with 1090T?

  • @utubeb14 have a look on overclock3d Ive just done a full review.

  • Insane

  • i have the same asus monitor- lasted for over 4 years now

  • @oldmanwhithers Ive had it ages too, literally dug it out the garage to set the server up!

  • May I ask sumthing, wat are these massive storage setups for? obviously for storing shit but how does it work :(

  • hello i have been looking for a good raid card for a 2 raids one raid 1 and raid (0+1)raid or do i have it backwards ? (1+0)raid

  • @ezone50 Proper raid cards are not cheap. How many drives do you need because Windows has its own raid for basic set ups without too many drives.

  • @TimeToLiveCustoms im going to have a total of 8 hard-drives 4 500GB in a raid (1+0)

and 4 or 5 1.5TB in a raid 5 (for back up{cloned-drives} ) but i can buy more than one cards if it will be cheaper :P

    thank you

  • call the sever. HURR I EAT MONEY!

  • that's my dream file server

  • wow would love a run-through on how your going to setup dhcp and a firewall on that. would be great experience for me as im learning about networking through cisco courses.

  • @CrossTechTips I will be going through it soon, I just need to get my head round it first :D

  • @TimeToLiveCustoms lol your telling me! i wouldn't know where to begin.

  • Holy Crap 12TB, nice system, awesome raid card to ! good vid Tom looking forward to the new videos coming.

  • Just found your channel, very much looking forward to this project. I've been using Windows Home Server, and I like it very much, looking forward to seeing what Windows Server 2008 RC2 can do.

  • I have build a Windows Home server and I have been very happy with it so far. I have 7 TB of storage on it. Hardware is nothing special just an asrock mobo with on board video and 4GB of OCZ ram. 3 2TB WD Green storage drives and a 1TB WD Green OS drive. It looks after pretty much anything that I need including back ups daily.

  • absolutely epic :3

  • *drool*

  • Well done, as soon as i get my new gaming rig i am turning my old one into a server setup.

  • Jesus that's one hell of a steering wheel in your front room, Why didn't you put 6 2tb drives in the server

  • I always laugh when say "Hi Guys" ;)

    Nice video .
