  • GERMANY HAS DESECRATED A GLORIOUS HYMN TO GOD ALMIGHTY AND ZION HIS CITY TO MAKE A NATIONAL ANTHEM. GERMANY SHOULD GIVE GOD THE GLORY IN THEIR ANTHEM.

  • @sutonchef Incorrect: Haydn wrote this music (with a partner writing the lyrics) as a birthday anthem for Kaiser Francis II. THEN the melody was adopted for use in a unifying, "German" anthem, calling all the various peoples of the region to join together as brothers. The CHRISTIAN CHURCH adopted the tune for their music, as is, of course, popular with the Church. So don't blame the Germans for using it; it was always theirs (or, properly, the AUSTRIANS').

  • @Toratchi888 yes, the original Austrian song was the Osterreichische Kaiserhymne while Germany adopted the melody for their Deutschland Lied.

  • @sutonchef

I don't think that them just not mentioning God in other lyrics to the tune desecrates the hymn. No one says AMERICA HAS DESECRATED A GLORIOUS BRITISH DRINKING SONG in videos of the Star Spangled banner simply because it doesn't mention Anacreon.

  • @sutonchef You do realize the tune was originally written to be a national anthem, except of the Austrian Empire. It went "Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser, unsern guten Kaiser Franz", meaning "God save Francis the Emperor, our good Emperor Francis".

  • ZION CITY OF OUR GOD GLORIOUS THINGS OF THEE ARE SPOKEN

  • I always utilize the words to the Deutschland Lied (in German) whenever they play this in church, just to make sure that people haven't fallen asleep.....haha.

  • One of my age old favourites. Reminds me of my school days, sung this lots in morning assenbly

  • I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (August 28), I played this for Sunday School assembly.

  • @mkl62 Just in case you weren't aware: The music was written by Joseph Haydn in 1796 and is also used as the current national anthem of Germany.

  • @Karash770 I was aware of that.
