while underwater...blow out air until you can lay on the bottom of the pool. Position your head so your mouth is pointing directly up. Cover your nose if you want, but make sure your arm isn't blocking your mouth. Now, say POWP underwater, using your diaphragm instead of your vocals. Practice this, and you should get some really nice rings.

How to do em: take a deep breath, swim all the way to the bottom, and lay on your back. it helps to plug your nose, but grab it from up top, so your hand isn't in the way of your mouth. You have to exhale one big burst of breath all at once, going PWOOOSH!!! it'll make like a jelly fish shaped bubble of air, and turn into what you see in the vid as it gets to the top.

Both bubble and smoke rings function as a vortex ring, where a spherical mass of fast moving fluid A is pushed through stationary fluid B. Behind the fast moving fluid is a low pressure area, where the molecules have been pushed out of the way. This causes the layer of material peeled off of material A to recirculate back into the mass.

This circulation causes a hole to be formed in the center, giving its donut shape. Fluids A and B may be the same fluid on the chemical level, all that is required is for one to be faster than the other. This explains why vortex ring state around the rotor blades of a helicopter is so dangerous.
