I was a guitar player. It took me a year to get comfortable with the instrument. I now play it exclusively. There is real cool jazz stuff you can do with the instrument that is not as transparent on guitar. I love it.

I am a big George Formby fan! There are a lot of your country men that have groups that would be a hoot to be involved with. This is where I would concentrate on learning and getting exposure to the instrument.
