Loyalist mobs used to attack nationalists and catholics and the police werent interested in stopping them, so the IRA was set up to protect the people. Yes they did commit some attrocities, but these were always direct responses to what Republicans done to us as the UK Governement were often to scared to stand up against these people.

Loyalist Paramillitaries used acts of terrorism, but it was more a case of terrorising the Terrorist (IRA/Sinn Fein) than terrorising innocent people, and the troubles were nothing to do with religion, it just happened that the majority of RC's were Nationalist/Republican and the majority of Protestant's were Loyalist/Unionist.
I was meaning the events in our histsory that the Orange Order and the other Loyal orders celebrate and commemorate.

It was actually the other way around in reality! Loyalist mobs used to attack nationalists and catholics and the police werent interested in stopping them, so the IRA was set up to protect the people. Britain never got involved as doing so would expose how bad the loyalist opression was to the Irish-American lobby who held a lot of sway in the US govt

Great Britain moved the native catholic Irish off their land in the early 1600s. It took care of two problems for them. It took the Scottish Presbyterians off the border of Scotland and England and placed them in the North of Ireland to make trouble for Ulster catholics. Did a fine job of it, too. Hopefully, things will be better going forward.
