  • Your videos are super helpful. I just started about two weeks ago, maybe three, and I've got down waist/hip/chest hooping, shimmying from waist to chest, the arm and shoulder duckouts so now I'm working on knees. I can keep it going around my knees when I give it a shove placed on my knees already, but I'm only successful at dropping it from my waist to my knees about 50% of the time. Any tips?

  • Sweet! I had trouble with this ALL day! I just couldn't get my hips to cooperate, but then all of a sudden...I did it! I think i let out a small squeal!!

    but i have a some problems :S!

    I have tried to maintain the hula hoop on my waist (I'm learning hardly) but i cant!

    the hoop falls and I can't maintain it long time, it is about the movement of hip or the weight of the hoop?

    I hope that you can help me :)

  • @StrawberryTix when I was learning to hoop at my waist I learned a valuable lesson. Size of the hoop is a major learning tool, the bigger the better(also heavier)! I used a HUGE hoop to start and downsized to about 11' I use a 3/4inch tube I can't remember the PSI tho. But that size and then the tape make it a good weight. once I master this size on my waist I'll try a little smaller! (bigger means slower! so it helps you practice instead of looking like you are having a seizure :P)

  • @StrawberryTix OH also The movement of your hips when learning should be front to back (if you prefer) Or Side to side! (some think its a circular motion which to be honest its more of a 2 contact point not 4)AND once you can keep it up practice moving around(its never to early, that way you don't become sooo used to standing still and focusing only on the hips)

  • Hi Safire! Your tutorials have helped me a lot! Thanks for being such a good teacher! I have a huge doubt, how do you keep the hoop spining at the middle of your legs using jeans or leggins? When Im using dresses or shorts I can leg hoop and shimmy up perfectly but when Im using jeans or leggins it just wont go up! Or it does but I look really funny... You lift it so gracefully while wearing jeans... Thanks for your amazing tutorials... ;)

  • I love your videos :D I think this was the first video i watched that got me into hoop dancing, i know i couldn't do the move but just seeing that you could do that with a hula hoop or really anything other than hooping around the waist inspired me to want to try it and It kinda just went from there and i finally got to where i am now so i want to thank you for that. Also i love your outfit, it's really cute.

  • hey I tried it ...two attempts and Vola Magic ...some key unlocked.....now I can even do it without the pop...U have to try with feet apart and side to side movement... THANK U SO MUCH ....ciao

  • Dude, I thought hooping was gonna be difficult, but I think you're going to be a great help once I start.

    Do you have any beginner hoop suggestions? (possibly cheap stuff?)

    PS, I suck at hula hooping normally. Any way I can work past that?

  • I'm having SO much trouble bringing the hoop back up to my waist! At 0:41 you say to give it a "good pop up" but whenever I do that, it just seems to go tripple speed in the same place... I'm not getting any leverage at all! I need some serious help.

  • Your a great teacher, very helpful! I was wondering what is the best material to wear while hooping? I am in the process of creating a hooping outfit and dont want it to be slippery.

  • Look for fabrics that are not slippery.  Cottons, jean material, etc. Usually more natural fibers have better grip than synthetics.

  • aww man, I looked all over your website for teh skirts, I was so excited! mirrors! tassels! yay! please let me know where to find the hoop skits when you have time ( I HEART poodle skirts! but prefer things that go down to the ankle, very elegant!)

  • @FireSandra Aaahhhh, Banyan pants are sadly NOT made for knee hooping :( Can't knee hoop to save my life with them! Thanks for this tutorial, been trying to get it from my knees to waist for a while, hopefully this will be the epiphany I needed!

I did not know how to even use a hula hoop last year, I built my first back in September and using your video tutorials (and smacking myself in the face a lot) I am now able to do almost all the tricks you show us.   • Here's a question. I get this sometimes and other times I just don't. I feel like soemtimes I have it too low and I get it stuck in the crook of the back of my knees. That makes it harder to bump up too. Bending both knees seems to help a little bit but still if I wear pants it falls easier. I am getting gaffers tape for a hoop. Will the gaffers tape help at all? I feel like I just need to get the feel of this down and it will click.

  • Gaffer tape will help A LOT! ; ) And bare skin too.

  • Thanks! I figured it might with clothing and would grip to it better. Mainly been able to get it to the waist those couple of times with shorts on so that has helped. You rock! Keep up the great work and thanks for sharing all of this...:)

  • SaFire, if you see this, you might have a video for it, but if I want to add fringe or something to my hoop for.. pizazz, since Im in a talent contest, and I usually hoop around my neck, should I go shorter fringe or longer fringe?

    Well you could always start with a long fringe and then shorten it if it's too long or you could vary the length and have it short then gradually increase in length to long and back again. That would be sweet. ; ) ~ SaFire ~

  • The Toys R Us ones are kind of cheap and not very heavy, and it makes them harder to use and easier to break. The best thing is to make your own - it's really easy; there are plenty of tutorials on the net, but all you really need is thin PVC pipe, glue, and pretty electrical tape.

  • yeh...hmm u make it look so easy! I'm rubbsih I'm getting frustrated. I hit up with my knee and thats the end, it all goes wrong. I think my hoops so heavy, it is pretty big, its good to learn but hard for tricks, could this be the problem?

  • I find a heavy hoop is a bit tricky for raising the hoop from the knees. It can also be pretty painful. Maybe try a friend's hoop. If you have no hooping friends then spread the good word and make newbie hoopers. ; )
