wow everytime someone posts a video there are so many subject matter experts criticising them its sick ! wheres all your videos of you guys preforming the perfect flawless techs ! what ever happened to the part in martial arts about setting your ego aside and being humble simply striving to better ones self
A guy puts up a video everyone feels the need to criticise him out of some misplaced resentment. To accomplish anything means not far from this people will be there to debase a person's accomplishments. This is a nature of jealousy.
Hitting the makawari too hard results in injury, as master Nakahodo has said, a little bit everyday.
Been hitting makawari almost daily for 6 years and have gradually increased in force and power, but to start off from scratch hitting hard will only injure your joints and probably result in cuts and scars.
Yeah he was love tapping it and not even using a decent stance for Makiwara training. Though maybe he was just showing his Makiwara mostly like the title says...
@dejathorus You stick your arms out like a tea pot. That is not good Karate. Also you're putting too much shoulder into it. Training since 1972? Damn that's a long time to train the WRONG way. Oh yeah and your Shuto ukes are crap! Your thumbs sticking out in the air begging to be broken and your fingers aren't tight together. I really hope you don't have a black belt
@louisperkins No you're senselessly name-calling and the details I'm criticising are true to Karate - a loose shuto hand will not cause any damage, but it will to you. You cannot punch to the fullest and fastest if you're elbows are sticking out - like a teapot. I was wrong about the shoulders but your tetsui fist is not straight. Mate it's Karate, the devil's in the details
You stick your arms out like a tea pot. That is not good Karate. Also you're putting too much shoulder into it. Training since 1972? Damn that's a long time to train the WRONG way
I am a karateka of 6 years, however my dojo does not emphasize makiwara training, but I would like to, I have searched up a few sites to buy one, but I was just wondering have to had or heard of any serious injury or problems occuring from makiwara use while using good form?
@Ne3emA He's strengthening his hands, not fighting, there is an OBVIOUS and HUGE difference. Strengthening your hands takes years and years, it is a slow process, you have to strike at a moderate strength to avoid injury, thus obviously he is not pounding his fits away like you would strike in an actual fight.
@Ne3emA tells us all you have no idea what Makiwara is for,its to toughen up the tool (ie your hand ,foot etc),you dont hit the thing like you would a dumbarse like you!.....and Im telling ya bitch If I hit you you'd be in a coma for life...
Can anyone tell me how to make a makiwara plz? I train on my wall with a towel (not sure if its writen like that) but it makes a lot of noise and my neighbours complain :\ I need help plz. Thank you. Ossss
@kyuubifox66-- I made mine with an oak 2x4 about 6 feet tall and cut it down near my height, wrapped 1 full layer of hemp rope around a 6.5 inch section. If you want it outdoor, sink it down about 2.5+ feet to get some flex but not too much. For indoor purposes, mount it to a wall, on the bottom drill in a 8+ inch piece of the oak 2x4 to the wall and bolt it in to the wall thru the makiwara and extra piece, this allows some flex but again not too much. Good luck! Keep training the RIGHT way!
If you start hitting hard right away, you will hurt yourself. That's probably why he isn't hitting that hard, either to show you that or not to hurt himself.
nice keen strikes, ignore all the people trying to criticize you, you have good power strong focus, and as for your technique they don't know what you practice so they have no say in the matter, technique is only proper when you make it your own, good looking makiwara, question for ya, when did you start hitting makiwara?
Well, as much as I respect you as a fellow karateka, I feel I must agree with newlevel on your form. Yorur maki is too stiff. I'm not saying you need to make it 1/2 inch to the point where it breaks on you, but it needs to be able to flex. Also, your form should be worked on. Your punches loose a lot of power when you bring your elbow away from your body, and you use too much shoulder in your strikes. That is both unhealthy and bad form.
You might have been hitting makiwara since 1972 but sadly in the wrong way, this really is not how makiwara works and what it is really being used to. I dont know which "style" you belong to but thats just not the proper way - the punch you want to strenghten your seiken with is called kizami zuki and its not the kind of punch which should be trained with makiwara - its better to train it on a boxing bag or a bag with sand. The normal cuki is much better and you should punch THROUGH
how often should one practice on a makiwara if you train in karate heavily? like once a week to let the bone heal? or every other day or every day? thanks to everyone who gives their advice and knowledge.
i hit makiwara as much as i could, bloody, pain, i just pushed thru it all. eventually your skin will callous over and become hard. if you don't mind ugly, white cloouses on your hands, hit it everyday, as much as you can! good luck!
@dejathorus Good practice! Haha i'm too cheap to get a makiwara so I slip on gloves and drill on trees. Not sure if I get the same effectiveness, but my knuckles cant feel anything when I hit the bag now. I feel like after you do makiwara for a while, you should transition to a punching bag and having someone hold pads for you. After doing karate, TKD, Kung fu, and Kenpo, I found that boxing REALLY cleaned up my punching! Try it out man! Wish the best in your path of Karate! Respect
If you apply a good strong dit ja jow before and after each session, and don't overdue the training, you CAN prevent a lot of damage to your hand, so i'm sorry newlevel, but you are mistaken.
Dont worry about what other tell you. Keep practicing that's all with no goal. Me i like better to train in an internal way but i admire the way of other too.
Proper training with the maki will often not use hard strikes. It many times will be used to correct the form and correct transmission of power from the hips into the hands or feet. Many of the beginning exercises are only pushing against the maki.

His makiwara training is meant to train your focus on proper deliverance of techniques not just because of pressure , power , speed or whatever you believe is proper makiwara training.
Heck you all are just a bunch of sissies sitting and cowering behind your pc and notebooks typing out things which you do not even know.
This man's makiwara strikes are good.
So stop being an ignorant fool by trying to say his is wrong or right. Prove it!
MDIS - I understand your reasoning but the fact is these people are correct about the details of his arm positioning, etc. If you don't adhere to the rules of hitting a Machiwara properly, you are causing damage to yourself, injuring your wrist, elbow and shoulder, aside from not developing the punch correctly. He is not delivering the technique properly... no offense intended.
I totally 100% agree. Elbows are turned outward when striking. They should be close to the ribs when punching or striking. No offense to the practioner here in the clip...but realize we are warning you to be very careful and use proper technique when hitting a makiwara. The wrong way and you end up paying for it years later!
Another thing..the makiwara has too much pressure! It needs give and flexibility!
From one karateka to another...stop this while you can. It's damaging your body.

I'm sorry I don't have an ego...I'm just trying to help you out because the shock from those hits are damaging. That's the solid truth.
Yes...you do need flexibility, but not too much and not too less.
I'm sorry too...but your elbow positioning hitting the makiwara itself is not correct. Keep your elbows in close to your ribs for an effective strike.
