Can someone explain this for me? Does John become a neo-nazi because he really is on the 'Job' undercover or because he really believes in those ideas as a result of his actions in the film? Or are we meant to make our own minds up?

I think that he's neither a nazi, nor he was working under cover, he just joined that nazi gang to be part of something, after he was exposed as a cop with the hooligans and his casual lover and he was despised with his wife and family.

Sad ending. I think this could happen to many people and therefore it explains why many people join extremist groups.

@Nemesis2459 I saw the movie a long time ago, but if I'm not mistaken, he ditched his friends when they left the investigation and he decided to remain with the hooligans, not to mention that he kicked one of them.

@Dorinus2 I explained it through my comment, but it's pretty clear that he is not working any more, he sadly lost the two lives he had, as a hooligan and as a cop-family man and he just pretends to be working under cover in front of his former colleague, but he is just hanging out with the nazis to be part of something.

Sad ending, no doubt.

I remember Reece Dinsdale in "Threads" the nuclear war shocker, depicting a 1+ megaton strike on Sheffield , nasty stuff , pulled no punches...then again for real would have been worse!!!

Totally agree. Great ending to a brilliant film. Really surprised nobody picked up that Reece was such a good actor. He was Oldman/ Day-Lewis-esque in this film. A brilliant performance and a real quality film.

I thought the exact same thing, like he just completely gave up his life as a cop and headed deeper into the belly of the beast until he ended up as the baddest of the bad, and how much more hardcore can you get than a neo-nazi. Fantastic ending, the credit music is really the cherry on top.
