  • its bananas enough to play this but to sing it at the same time.?!?!?!incredible

  • i wonder what punky meadows thinks of this song?

  • every time when someone tells me that he likes mr bungle i show them this video

  • I hate his kit,Wish he would bring back the baby snakes kit.

  • It is simply the BEST BAND WORLDWIDE ...

Thanks to Mr Zappa for resurrecting his father's repertoire with such talent and virtuosity.

    It's pure musical delight.

  • Youtube lets you upload past 10 minutes now...post it all!

  • terry bozzio is on drugs!!

  • @beanriffs

No he is not on drugs he is just gettin in touch with his inner self of 1977 when he was like 25 / 26 years old

  • @beanriffs probably not, zappa was extremely anti-drug so i doubt he would have let bozzio in the band if he was using, and if he wasnt using back then theres a good chance he isnt using now, and it would be an insult to be playing with dweezil while high knowing how anti drug his father was

  • @fishboy1111111

hey dude, it was a joke

  • Drugo Lebowski on Vibraphone :D

  • @Alex11710 His microphone certainly has a polar pattern that only catches his voice. As you can see, Bozzio is the only thing that the mic is pointed to, and the cymbals and the drums noise get in the back of the mic. Using the right polar pattern (e.g. supercardiod), you're able to capture only his voice.

  • zappa lite

  • Terry secretly dubs Stewie Griffin

  • He's Stewie Griffin

  • 昔の演奏より盛り上がってないけど、

    やっぱりBozzioはかっこいいです。

  • I hate his kit.Bring back the old one from baby snakes. His cymbols sound like garbage tops.

  • this is great. used to have a lof of fun playing this one....dweezil does a nice job, but not as funky on the solo as FZ...

  • This version sounds wretched. I can't tell if it's the mix, the intonation, the lack of musicians driving the beat - or a combination of the three... Love the version from Baby Snakes, but this will have to do for the 21st century.

  • How do they keep the noise from his cymbals out of his vocal mike?

  • @Alex11710 I'm thinking noise gate.

  • @wingnutofcoolness - I guess that would make sense, but it seems like the cymbals would be way louder than his voice, like a noise gate that could block out all that sound woud definitely block out his voice.

  • @Alex11710 well the mic he is using a Shure Beta56A. The Beta56 has an hypercardiod pattern, so it will repel any unwanted noise from de back! in the case of Terry the loud cymbals, also he is almost eating the mic so the proximity of his singing will make a prevalent "only" vocal take! but i do agreed that some kind of noise gate is also in place to avoid any unwanted sounds. Hope that helped! XD

  • Terry is still hilarious, and sings the song just the same as he did in the 83.

  • Absolutely brilliant. Bozzio is just phenominal. Man, i would loved to've seen this

  • i get no point in terry's set. its just a fuckload of chinas, whats the point in that?

  • @ringostarrkicksass im not a drummer but i found it funny your name was ringo kicks ass. haha. which he does! haha

  • intonation went out at 1:15...like 1/2 step off someone was.

  • @DruidTM I'm fairly sure that's intentional. Typical zappa kind of fill that catches you off guard but makes sense when you listen back

  • i didnt even know bozzio could sing! now he IS the beast

  • @xaxu1254 Terry used to sing backgrounds when he was with Frank Zappa, UK and Missing Persons.

  • ironic that bozzio recorded this with zappa the same year he turned into a punky whips with missing persons..

  • @zwartepiet412 - Zappa in NY came out before Missing Persons was formed.

  • @zwartepiet412

Erm Punky Whips was recorded in 1977 and the Missing Persons were founded in 1980

  • this is what frank zappa is all about. at first glance glance you'll see that's it's corky and funny but when you listen to it deeply it's very much damn complicated. harder than calculus i would say. haha

  • couldnt imagine how long it takes to put up and take apart bozzios set hahah

  • Man. You can see the difference between the other musicians and Bozzio - I hear some of the 1970s band in his playing. Hell, I can FEEL it - the drums just sound interesting, essential, important. Compared to the ZPZ percussionist, whose beats just can't make me care. It's weird. Thoughts?

  • a shame frank didn't live longer period and especially to see the evolution of Dwezzil

    Bozzio and Vai

Bozzio's timing is impeccable and love the melodic playing

  • steven tyler DID pay to see.

  • Wauw! Bozzio simply is *brilliant*. Why do I always come back to the Zappa-Bozzio-Holdsworth-Cobham-Metheny era? Anyone have a clue? The beauty of this piece (and lots of Zappa) is that humor is combined with a very complex rithmic and melodic 'enema', wauw, just great!

  • Bozzio is amazing

  • Dwezel is pretty damn good playing the SG like the old man

  • @hadd13 Dweezil transcends Frank as a player. All those little melodies (such as St Alphonso's Pancake breakfast) played on guitar, Dweezil can play it all. He may not be the composer his dad was, but he can pull off all his melodies. Dweezil is totally underrated as a guitar player

  • @b0b1919 he's the only person I've heard pull off Eddie's 'Eruption' anywhere near the original version. Dweezil just seems to be able to do it all. No wonder he ended up in Frank's band at the age of 16

  • I feel compelled to comment, but I don't any words that do justice to how good this is.

  • a little slower then the classic baby snakes version.

  • @fadethetrade but not as slow as the original Zappa in NY version ;]

  • @Squee36 god,that was a horrible version!!.As frank would say,"you're too adagio,I keep telling you"LOL!

usually,I prefer zappas original versions on all his songs like the bongo fury version of carolina, best guitar lead ever and the harmonics and everything was perfect and since that version ,his carolina versions,in my opinion got worse and worse.

  • @Squee36 I think in the live in ny version,he was experimenting with the tempo but he never played it that slow again so he realized it didnt work.

  • @Squee36 I dont like bozzios kit.Too overkill and the cymbols sound like garbage can tops.Clankity clank.I like his old set and cymbols better ,the one in the baby snakes era.

  • @fadethetrade As do I. :D

  • He's a little fond of chiffon in a wrist array-e-ay-e-ayyyyy!! love it.

  • Ha! Pouting for you, ha!

    Punky Meadows pouting for you?

  • Oh yessss ! That's what Terry is really made for !

  • Amazing indeed!!

  • the quality of this rock...for god sake! Zappa is a genius!

I've spent 20 years listening this music, from that remarkable show, in 1979. Absolutely classic, Punky's Whips is one of my favorites. Thanks, Bozzio, you're still amazing!!!

  • awesome!

  • Comment removed

  • I wonder what Frank would have to write about today to shock people?

Maybe it got easier idk, perhaps the truth would do lmao!

  • They're very brave to play this. Some things are of course impossible to reproduce from Zappa's performances. But some parts are even more interesting. Nice give and take.

  • A fine rendition indeed .

My absolute ultimate favourite is the original vinyl version, as the cd release is drowned in crappy overdubbed guitar.....probably seemed a good idea at the time

  • Bozzios actually quite funny

  • terry bozzio fucking rules

  • @dannyW900 No he doesn't. He's good and all, but he's not Vinnie

  • This guys need some caffeine or something... Compared to any of the original ones, this is kinda flat.

    Central Scrutinizer ftw. =P

  • a fine version of an intense musical piece.with little or no error.Critics of this vid are in need of a re-check.

  • The band sounds really DUMB. Not bad or anything, but just so tediously normal. They pull off the notes, but absolutely NOTHING beyond that

  • I love Bozzio.

I like the two versions, 1979 and this, the sounds of drums is very diferent.

The words are "fuck" for 1979 and "remember" for this, Two amazing!

    Thanks.

    Van Shake)))

  • Always fun but not my favourite version of this song.. Bozzio's sound is so dry and short.. not my cup of tea.. miss dynamics too.. but maybe that's just me.. Zappa forever!!

  • I do agree that the full dynamics of the Baby Snakes version really is going to trump a YouTube video, and Bozzio's really revamped his kit from the late 70's. On the other hand, seeing this live is still pretty amazing. He could have played it on cardboard boxes for all I cared. Huge thanks to Dweezil for allowing everyone to enjoy this live. Amazing stuff.

  • Was this song ever on an album?

  • Zappa in New York and the Baby Snakes DVD

  • I was not on the original Live in New York album but appeared on the CD version later.

It's performed on the Baby Snakes DVD.

  • Thank you, this is spectacular.

  • c'mon punky...get funky!!

  • he needs crash cymbals

  • He has them, but I don't know why he rarely uses them.

  • without the carefull guidance by mr. Zappa, the performance lack a bit of the feel that makes such tunes so great, although I have all the respect for Dweezil(met him, and he's an amazing musician)

    the Baby snakes version Kills.

  • Terry never fails to impress , but singing in the style of Frank AND playing too? fucking incredible!

  • PUNKYS WHIPS!

  • I don't like Bozzio's cymbals.

But he is a great drummer. "Zappa in New York" is a good example of his goodness!

  • sheila is cute

  • Sheila is smoking hot!!! being all that pretty and playing all those instruments!!

  • yes!

  • Bozzio is a genius!

  • Terry is the sex. He's the Bruce Lee of drumming >_> =^_^=

  • Bozzio is the shit. The 3 best drummers I've ever seen live....Bozzio with Jeff beck, Vinnie with FZ, and Dennis Chambers with Steely Dan.

  • It kills me how they make fun of Punky Meadows. How about years later Missing Persons.I thought Terry was a lady. But I guess because it was the eighties it was it was ok for him then.Ithought he was queer or gay.

  • I think terry is very fond of punky ;-) ... he promises not to cum in his mouth.

  • @ridingtheplastic He ain't really queer, but if he'd ever come near, Steven Tyler would pay, to see.

  • I dont get it...guess i dont know music

  • word.

  • You're right. You don't.

  • Comment removed

  • yes you could just listen to the live at new york cd which i agree is the best version but dweezil is trying to bring the experience of being at a zappa show to people who either never got to see him before he died or were just too young to enjoy zappa when he was around, spreading zappas music to a new audience/generation can only be a good thing even if it may be inferior to the original

  • Yank it ALL night long

  • let some1 tell me that terry bozzio isn't the best drummer int he world ill kick there azzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • 2 words

    Buddy Fucking Rich

  • They play different styles... Comparing Bozzio to Rich is like comparing Jimi Hendrix to Wes Montgomery. Plus, props to Bozzio for playing tight beats and singing at the same time.

  • I hate the way the female singer sings

  • Comment removed

  • me too

  • what did that guy say??

  • YANK IT PUNKY!

  • And they say that Terry Bozzio is over rated. :)))

  • I love Terry

    I Ain't gay, but uh...

  • awsome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • once again, i think i just shit myself !

  • My god, I love this song, hahahaha

    COME ON PUNKY

    GIVE ME YOUR LIPS

    RIGHT ON MY PENIS TIP

  • wonderful, but they could've played a little faster!

  • the saxophone player is hot.

  • TERRY BOZZIO WILL ROCK FOREVER! GENIUS!

Frank, We will miss you but always will have your presence in the Legacy of your Music!

  • agree with uploader, would be a total crime to split this. Cheers : )

  • I wish he had better stage pressence, he's soo stiff up there. Love how Bozzio still has it in him at his age haha, plays just like he did in Baby Snakes.

  • SKIN DOOM!!

  • Excellent! he does his father proud :)
