@beanriffs probably not, zappa was extremely anti-drug so i doubt he would have let bozzio in the band if he was using, and if he wasnt using back then theres a good chance he isnt using now, and it would be an insult to be playing with dweezil while high knowing how anti drug his father was
@Alex11710 His microphone certainly has a polar pattern that only catches his voice. As you can see, Bozzio is the only thing that the mic is pointed to, and the cymbals and the drums noise get in the back of the mic. Using the right polar pattern (e.g. supercardiod), you're able to capture only his voice.
This version sounds wretched. I can't tell if it's the mix, the intonation, the lack of musicians driving the beat - or a combination of the three... Love the version from Baby Snakes, but this will have to do for the 21st century.
@wingnutofcoolness - I guess that would make sense, but it seems like the cymbals would be way louder than his voice, like a noise gate that could block out all that sound woud definitely block out his voice.
@Alex11710 well the mic he is using a Shure Beta56A. The Beta56 has an hypercardiod pattern, so it will repel any unwanted noise from de back! in the case of Terry the loud cymbals, also he is almost eating the mic so the proximity of his singing will make a prevalent "only" vocal take! but i do agreed that some kind of noise gate is also in place to avoid any unwanted sounds. Hope that helped! XD
this is what frank zappa is all about. at first glance glance you'll see that's it's corky and funny but when you listen to it deeply it's very much damn complicated. harder than calculus i would say. haha
Man. You can see the difference between the other musicians and Bozzio - I hear some of the 1970s band in his playing. Hell, I can FEEL it - the drums just sound interesting, essential, important. Compared to the ZPZ percussionist, whose beats just can't make me care. It's weird. Thoughts?
Wauw! Bozzio simply is *brilliant*. Why do I always come back to the Zappa-Bozzio-Holdsworth-Cobham-Metheny era? Anyone have a clue? The beauty of this piece (and lots of Zappa) is that humor is combined with a very complex rithmic and melodic 'enema', wauw, just great!
@hadd13 Dweezil transcends Frank as a player. All those little melodies (such as St Alphonso's Pancake breakfast) played on guitar, Dweezil can play it all. He may not be the composer his dad was, but he can pull off all his melodies. Dweezil is totally underrated as a guitar player
@b0b1919 he's the only person I've heard pull off Eddie's 'Eruption' anywhere near the original version. Dweezil just seems to be able to do it all. No wonder he ended up in Frank's band at the age of 16
@Squee36 god,that was a horrible version!!.As frank would say,"you're too adagio,I keep telling you"LOL!
usually,I prefer zappas original versions on all his songs like the bongo fury version of carolina, best guitar lead ever and the harmonics and everything was perfect and since that version ,his carolina versions,in my opinion got worse and worse.
@Squee36 I dont like bozzios kit.Too overkill and the cymbols sound like garbage can tops.Clankity clank.I like his old set and cymbols better ,the one in the baby snakes era.
the quality of this rock...for god sake! Zappa is a genius!
I've spent 20 years listening this music, from that remarkable show, in 1979. Absolutely classic, Punky's Whips is one of my favorites. Thanks, Bozzio, you're still amazing!!!
They're very brave to play this. Some things are of course impossible to reproduce from Zappa's performances. But some parts are even more interesting. Nice give and take.
At the expense of getting my ass flamed, I have to say this.....Barry Brandt, you know the drummer in Punky's band (Angel), plays w/ more feeling than the elitist Bozzio...and he never played in his underwear like Bozzio did....
My absolute ultimate favourite is the original vinyl version, as the cd release is drowned in crappy overdubbed guitar.....probably seemed a good idea at the time
Always fun but not my favourite version of this song.. Bozzio's sound is so dry and short.. not my cup of tea.. miss dynamics too.. but maybe that's just me.. Zappa forever!!
I do agree that the full dynamics of the Baby Snakes version really is going to trump a YouTube video, and Bozzio's really revamped his kit from the late 70's. On the other hand, seeing this live is still pretty amazing. He could have played it on cardboard boxes for all I cared. Huge thanks to Dweezil for allowing everyone to enjoy this live. Amazing stuff.
without the carefull guidance by mr. Zappa, the performance lack a bit of the feel that makes such tunes so great, although I have all the respect for Dweezil(met him, and he's an amazing musician)
It kills me how they make fun of Punky Meadows. How about years later Missing Persons.I thought Terry was a lady. But I guess because it was the eighties it was it was ok for him then.Ithought he was queer or gay.
yes you could just listen to the live at new york cd which i agree is the best version but dweezil is trying to bring the experience of being at a zappa show to people who either never got to see him before he died or were just too young to enjoy zappa when he was around, spreading zappas music to a new audience/generation can only be a good thing even if it may be inferior to the original
They play different styles... Comparing Bozzio to Rich is like comparing Jimi Hendrix to Wes Montgomery. Plus, props to Bozzio for playing tight beats and singing at the same time.
I wish he had better stage pressence, he's soo stiff up there. Love how Bozzio still has it in him at his age haha, plays just like he did in Baby Snakes.
its bananas enough to play this but to sing it at the same time.?!?!?!incredible
