They just put up tax on purchases by 2.5%, the government is making cuts in lots of important areas such as healthcare (which is tax funded) and the Armed forces. I'm paying out of my fucking arse for petrol (gasoline) because the government TAX it so much. And now they want to PAY fat people (of which there are a lot less relatively in the UK) to get thin??? I think the reason why the British government is entertaining this is because healthcare is paid for by the government and they are trying to cut down medical care costs. If person A never loses weight he/she will likely end up in the OR for artery bypass surgery. So, ultimately it does save money as crazy as it sounds. The United States government has little incentive to do this because healthcare is largely paid for by private insurance.
@bigchunk1 Not that I'm questioning your theory, but I should point out health care in the UK is not paid for by the Government, it's paid for by people who work. It's called National Insurance, and deducted from your salary. However the Government does decide how that money is allocated within the health service. I just want to point that out because it seems in the US people think we all get 'free' health care in the UK paid for by 'the government'. Though I know you didn't mean it like that.
i agree this is a flawed idea financially but after two years of good behaviour, these behaviours will be habits and it would b easy to keep doin them without even struggling
How about instead of the government paying people to lose weight, the government lowers the price of organic and healthier foods through subsidies? The reason why so many lower income and poor people are overweight in America is because the food they can afford is extremely unhealthy and chuck full of fat. I do not believe in the government telling people what they can eat or how to live, but if it is going to do that anyway do it in a way that works.
662 dollars isn't anything, losing 30+ pounds and keeping it off for two years is worth many thousands to some because it's difficult to do. How about just offering those that stay at or under their "ideal" weight and have other healthy habits that exceed the norm a discount on their health insurance, if they have any? One should not need a reason other than being healthy to lose weight and keep it off. But look at our society, fast-food everywhere, no time to workout, expensive healthy foods.
If people wont lose weight with the sole intention of losing weight and becoming healthier, then of course once the superficial incentive is gone they'll be right back where they started. That's why in the long term, programs such as these will have very little positive benefit. Better to promote and incorporate healthy living than spend taxes on something that logically speaking, wont work.

Poor fat people are fat because healthy food is much more expensive and going to the gym also costs money. So I think that in stead of giving people money, maybe a good idea is if they (partly) pay for the gym membership. Which health insurances could do with people who weigh over a certain amount, which makes them more likely to get illnesses. Also what the government could do is subsidize the healthy food to make that more accessible. Although this might be a more realistic point in EU than US

Sugar was rationed until my Mother was ten and she has never had a sweet tooth. British food can be great, hearty and flavourful.The money for weight loss has presedence in the UK so medical authorites used money or vouchers as incentives to help people quit smoking and drugs, which some success.

Actually DigitalDistribution was right on the money, though I would disagree that this is what TYT does best. They make a lot of excellent political observations, but their track record on looking at scientific studies is apalling.
If the war on smoking told us anything, it's that financial incentives or de-incentives mean nothing. We taxed the f out of cigarettes, but it did nothing to reduce smoking. Insurance companies hiked their rates for smokers, but it did nothing.
The only thing that seemed to help is making it inconvenient. The number of smokers overall only went down a little, but the number of chain smokers dropped off dramatically. Let's make life hard on us fatties and see what happens.

@gigantniki I wouldn't touch some B&B food with gloves. You no doubt got the 29p store-brand beans packed with sugar, they'll have a cellar with said tins lining the walls and dust lining said tins. Don't get me wrong, it won't make you ill, though if you leave beans long enough the sugar settles, half of it tastes far too sweet, the other half tastes, just, off.
If you want real British food eat in a high class pub, Gaelic themed restaurant or visit a small village, warning can easily go wrong.

@ihaterobbie123 Fish and chips is litterally that cheap frozen fish sticks you can get at walmart for about 3 bucks. They charge about $20 a meal when normally eatting out is about $6-10.

I know this because i grew up eatting the stuff, A pack of fish sticks dipped in fry sauce, about a 1 dollar meal for my oh so rich parents at the time. Maby the British have better fish but i could not tell the difference between them. I prefer to spend about $18 less and have 2x as much to eat than eat at Fish and Chips. Maby the resturaunt is different also, i don't know.

@Phoboskomboa I eat liver and onions sometimes, tuna casserole without crisps is fine and fry the onions yourself and again I have no problems stomaching that.
I don't eat chitterlings because my dad thought pork and intestines are just a dangerous way to eat. He has no problems with haggis, but that's probably because it's easier to under-cook something if you boil it. I have no idea what it tastes like but food interests me so I'll put my penny on finding some.

paying people can actually cause poorer performance in some cases. you can repeatedly offer $X to do such and such extra task. But if its something that requires creativity or special thinking to really get through the problem they may not do it by being so worried on the money if they will achieve it or not. but if its a straight forward task that can be done with obviously amount of effort and time, they may get it done. step back and help them want to do it on their own.
If you paid me, I'd use the money for healthier more organic food... so yes, if you paid me, I would absolutely be more healthy. Not because I'd be more willing, but because I could afford it. Yes.

They just put up tax on purchases by 2.5%, the government is making cuts in lots of important areas such as healthcare (which is tax funded) and the Armed forces. I'm paying out of my fucking arse for petrol (gasoline) because the government TAX it so much. And now they want to PAY fat people (of which there are a lot less relatively in the UK) to get thin??? I think the reason why the British government is entertaining this is because healthcare is paid for by the government and they are trying to cut down medical care costs. If person A never loses weight he/she will likely end up in the OR for artery bypass surgery. So, ultimately it does save money as crazy as it sounds. The United States government has little incentive to do this because healthcare is largely paid for by private insurance.

@bigchunk1 Not that I'm questioning your theory, but I should point out health care in the UK is not paid for by the Government, it's paid for by people who work. It's called National Insurance, and deducted from your salary. However the Government does decide how that money is allocated within the health service. I just want to point that out because it seems in the US people think we all get 'free' health care in the UK paid for by 'the government'. Though I know you didn't mean it like that.

How about instead of the government paying people to lose weight, the government lowers the price of organic and healthier foods through subsidies? The reason why so many lower income and poor people are overweight in America is because the food they can afford is extremely unhealthy and chuck full of fat. I do not believe in the government telling people what they can eat or how to live, but if it is going to do that anyway do it in a way that works.

662 dollars isn't anything, losing 30+ pounds and keeping it off for two years is worth many thousands to some because it's difficult to do. How about just offering those that stay at or under their "ideal" weight and have other healthy habits that exceed the norm a discount on their health insurance, if they have any? One should not need a reason other than being healthy to lose weight and keep it off. But look at our society, fast-food everywhere, no time to workout, expensive healthy foods.

If people wont lose weight with the sole intention of losing weight and becoming healthier, then of course once the superficial incentive is gone they'll be right back where they started. That's why in the long term, programs such as these will have very little positive benefit. Better to promote and incorporate healthy living than spend taxes on something that logically speaking, wont work.

Interesting that Cenk doesn't think it's worthwhile to spend tax $s on paying people to lose weight. But might he agree it's worthwhile to spend money on educating people about nutrition and persuading them to eat healthy diets? I think he might. Public health is important and money spent on preventing people becoming obese is better than money spent treating their diabetes and money lost to fat-related illness, early death etc.

Cenk, I like most of your points, but you've obviously not ever had real British food. As a Brit, I can't stand a great deal of American food (fatty burgers, etc...) so each to their own, but don't be dismissive as others can be dismissive to you.
The chance of this happening now is zero with Cameron's savage cuts to everywhere (including the NHS) we will barely have enough money to keep help for children with learning issues on the go. Most of the think tank crap never actually happens anyway

Poor fat people are fat because healthy food is much more expensive and going to the gym also costs money. So I think that in stead of giving people money, maybe a good idea is if they (partly) pay for the gym membership. Which health insurances could do with people who weigh over a certain amount, which makes them more likely to get illnesses. Also what the government could do is subsidize the healthy food to make that more accessible. Although this might be a more realistic point in EU than US

Cenk people in the UK eat from cuisines from around the world, including pizza which is hugely fattening. British food used to suck because there was rationing which limited our grandparents diet. Sugar was rationed until my Mother was ten and she has never had a sweet tooth. British food can be great, hearty and flavourful.The money for weight loss has presedence in the UK so medical authorites used money or vouchers as incentives to help people quit smoking and drugs, which some success.

If the war on smoking told us anything, it's that financial incentives or de-incentives mean nothing. We taxed the f out of cigarettes, but it did nothing to reduce smoking. Insurance companies hiked their rates for smokers, but it did nothing.
The only thing that seemed to help is making it inconvenient. The number of smokers overall only went down a little, but the number of chain smokers dropped off dramatically. Let's make life hard on us fatties and see what happens.

Cenk forgot that the UK has universal healthcare. They save money if people are not fat any they don't have to spend tons of money on the long term effects of obesity and related loss of productivity.

When you said British food sucks you ignore traditional home cooking, a few of those can't be found in supermarkets and some not at all unless cooked at home. They're all iconic dishes that you would have enjoyed if you bothered to acquaint culturally.

@gigantniki I wouldn't touch some B&B food with gloves. You no doubt got the 29p store-brand beans packed with sugar, they'll have a cellar with said tins lining the walls and dust lining said tins. Don't get me wrong, it won't make you ill, though if you leave beans long enough the sugar settles, half of it tastes far too sweet, the other half tastes, just, off.
If you want real British food eat in a high class pub, Gaelic themed restaurant or visit a small village, warning can easily go wrong.

I know this because i grew up eatting the stuff, A pack of fish sticks dipped in fry sauce, about a 1 dollar meal for my oh so rich parents at the time. Maby the British have better fish but i could not tell the difference between them. I prefer to spend about $18 less and have 2x as much to eat than eat at Fish and Chips. Maby the resturaunt is different also, i don't know.

@ihaterobbie123 Most of that sounds disgusting to me. It's all the sort of thing that you either have to be raised on or it's not going to be appetizing. I doubt liver and onions, tuna casserole, or chitlins sound very good to you.

@Phoboskomboa I eat liver and onions sometimes, tuna casserole without crisps is fine and fry the onions yourself and again I have no problems stomaching that.
I don't eat chitterlings because my dad thought pork and intestines are just a dangerous way to eat. He has no problems with haggis, but that's probably because it's easier to under-cook something if you boil it. I have no idea what it tastes like but food interests me so I'll put my penny on finding some.

paying people can actually cause poorer performance in some cases. you can repeatedly offer $X to do such and such extra task. But if its something that requires creativity or special thinking to really get through the problem they may not do it by being so worried on the money if they will achieve it or not. but if its a straight forward task that can be done with obviously amount of effort and time, they may get it done. step back and help them want to do it on their own.
