Oh wow, this is absolutely incredible......I love storytelling songs, and your performance is just wonderful. :) Your voice has a lot of authencity to it.
Yvonne,Bob and Kazandra, you have been so uniquely gracious with your very warm and heartfelt comments! Please accept my humble appreciation! Thank you. Such warmth!
Very good writing Shirley. I'm primarily on this tube for exactly this kind of entertainment. Very deserving of all 5 stars and a new sub for me. I look forward to sharing some of my tunes with you. Mark
Dan, you have really made me smile inside...I shall be beaming all day. Thank you so much! Your comment is very special to me! So you like it! Great...I like it too. Its my first stab at venturing into a story.
interesting...similar melody yet different! what does brap mean? I went to your site and listened to the feature video that I think you are talking about.
This is fantastic, Shirley. My favorite of yours. This is a damn fine piece of songwriting. I love that you used such concrete imagery. Five stars and favorited.
Seeso, thank you for the comments. It's the first time that I used a newspaper article, which was very interesting, and turned it into a story with fable-like character like dark raven. Number 10 is a real person...that I changed his prisoner number and made him spirit form, imprisoned in his coffin, on Boot Hill...also true. Very exciting. Thanks for the lovely comments again. It warms my heart. Shirley
Raymondcrooke, this is quite an honour considering the strength of your song library, which I think may only be a sliver of what you know! Thank you again.
Wow!!! What an absolutely amazing song. Lyrically, it is simply amazing to me.
What powerful imagery it invokes.
And some of your lines, "Pine Tree Root, Iron Bars, never have their fill" and well, actually I just can't say this about only a few lines, this whole song is just chock full of brilliant prose.
Have you written any books Shirley? If so I sure would love to read them.
MonkeylessJohn, thank you so much for your generous words. No books, but I used to love to write as a teenager. I am so glad you enjoyed the song's lyrics. It means a lot when you hear this from peers, if I may.
Hi Shirley, you certainly may, and in fact it is my honour that you would consider me your peer.
Again let me say hoe wonderful this song is.
I read constantly, and am always looking for gifted authors to read, and have been so fortunate to have found many, and I truly think you have "the gift"
well i was just thinking the other day that i hadnt heard one from you in awhile!!! great job Shirley!!! love listening to your soft gentle sweet mellow voice & strumming!
This is a beautifully written dark ballad, Shirley... one of the best I've heard! Storyteller songs have fallen out of fashion in the past few years and I do love them so much. Your images are masterful, and I can feel every lonely last breath of all 47 prisoners in this amazing song. I agree with you and UncleVRoy...Boot Hill Raven would be a very commanding title. I can see your video now... sort of a "Delia" setting... :) Your voice is perfect for this song.
That is a very dark one for sure. I grew up in Bisbee, Arizona which is about 25 miles from Tombstone where the most famous "Boot Hill" is. Great saysing on the Tombstones like: "Here Lies Lester Moore, 4 shots from a 44, no Les no more." You have written quite a song.
Thank you flatted5th! Glad you liked the imagery and the lyrics. Boot Hill was where the last of the cons were buried before the prison closed around 1968. Boot Hill does have 47 stones marked only by prisoner's numbers. The switch to Boot Hill was due to pine tree roots being to hard to dig a hole, it took them 2-3days before they relocated the grave to Boot Hill.
UncleVRoy, thanks. Boot Hill Raven perhaps should be the title of this. By the time I had uploaded this video, I had forgotten the melody, and I don't know the lyrics just yet. ha ha. Good thing for technology...my video can help me learn the song! ha ha. Thanks again for you great comment. Shirley
