Some American jokes are based on colloquialisms, and the various American subcultures which wouldn't have any meaning what so ever to someone who has a limited knowledge of American culture. (IE the Waterboy which did great in the US , but bombed in Europe)

While on the other hand some movies and jokes are pretty much international. Which is why some American humor is seen as funny while other aspects of it are not.
