  • any one know the name of the second reel

  • Wonderful!! :D :D

  • Why is theres always a row going on in the comments to a lot of these traditional tunes - lads can't you just enjoy the music???

  • Great Music

  • American, Irish or whatever, you can't doubt the superbness of his playing

  • WOW it sounds like STRONGHOLD 2!!

  • penis

  • hmm, this makes me want to pick up the banjo again.

  • excellent! *****

  • MAGNIFICENT

cant spell but you know what i mean!!

  • Banjo Barney from Donnycarney, in full flight.

  • Barney plays a 4-string

  • McKenna plays the so called Irish Tenor Banjo, wich he truly self-invented.

He puts a GDAE tuning on an ordinary 19 or 17 frets 4 string banjo.

  • @spunnek75 Wait, so he tunes it like a violin? Odd. Cool, but still odd. Aren't banjos tuned usually in fourths instead of fifths?

  • @Epidemic52 the irish tenor banjo can be tuned the same as a fiddle, but an octave down.

  • I really hate to nit-pick about this...but Swallowtail is in 6/8 time so it would be a Jig, not a reel. Reels are in 4/4 time.

Only reason I know this is because I've recently started taking Violin lessons.

  • @PEIDanielScott

This song is in 4/4. Listen more closely. The lead is mostly in 16th notes, with some 32nd note embellishments, and the backup chords change every measure, each of which is 4 beats long.

I've danced many, many reels. This is most definitely a reel.

  • @Flatcap4

I stand corrected. Thanks much Flatcap.

  • @PEIDanielScott

I hope your lessons will devote a bit more time to recognizing key signatures -- this is most definitely in 4/4 time, not 6/8 time.

  • @Whistlecelt

I agree. I still have so much to learn. I admit I was wrong.

  • Don't worry- being relatively new to Irish traditional music myself, I know exactly how the confusion arose. There absolutely IS a jig in 6/8 also called the Swallowtail, and though it turns out to be an entirely different tune the identical titles cause them to be mixed up all the time. The further you get into this music the more you'll find that there are actually a lot of different Irish tunes that share names, and even more confusingly, many that have different names but identical melodies!

  • @PEIDanielScott An Irish reel would be played on a fiddle not a violin, theres a difference, don't come on here acting the expert. I bet your a feckin yank...

  • @Emmettdoyle1

Actually, if you look at my other comments it will state that I've only been playing for a few months, Never claimed to be an expert. Also, a Fiddle and a Violin are the exact same instrument.

    By the way, I'm Canadian.

  • @PEIDanielScott i apologise on behalf of that arsehole emmettdoyle1. we are not all like that..

  • @neilhosey I didnt think so, I cant wait to have the chance to visit ireland i can already hear her calling...

What would be a great place for an american to go over there? I would really like to go to the Jameson distillery

    my favorite whiskey ever ;)

  • @Drunkcox707 I'm with you on the Jameson :) However, don't forget the good old Bushmills distillery on the north coast of Ireland. A close second in my opinion!

  • @Emmettdoyle1 ... your an arsehole... and an incorrect arsehole. keep quiet, ur making the rest of the irish look like brainless cunts.

  • @Emmettdoyle1 Who give's a damn no one's an expect compared to barney so pay your respects and keep yer mouth shut. Ireland, american, russia there's no difference we're all human and your whinning won't change that

  • Comment removed

  • @Emmettdoyle1 Whats wrong with americans i don't understand why you hate us, we are the most diverse country, which means we definitly aren't all alike. Im as irish as they come here an im damn proud of it.

  • @Drunkcox707 you live in america, yet you're "as irish as they come"? righto mate. no issue with your sentiment, just think about what you're saying next time, or you'll make yourself look like an ass... again.

  • @MrThedalaillamaknows an how do i make myself look like an ass by being proud of where my blood comes from. YOU i believe look more of an ass. So what, am i not supposed to care the least bit about where my family came from? Well fuck you buddy. You may be fine an dandy growin up in ireland but here all we got to be proud of is where our blood came from because i dont agree with alot of what my country does. get off your high horse!

  • @Drunkcox707 You can be proud all you like, i have no objection to this, infact, i think it's great to be proud of your heritage. It is important now more than ever to keep in mind traditional cultures and heritage. But going around and saying "i'm as Irish as they come" when you're clearly not, will achieve one of two things, you'll either end up being laughed at, because you'll look like an arse or you'll get your teeth knocked out. Depends on who you say it to. So try "I have irish heritage".

  • @MrThedalaillamaknows im clearly not irish? lol Ive got a sliver of german an just bout completely irish i have close family who live in ireland in the county meeth you can kiss my ass an try to knock my teeth out but i highly doubt it.

  • @Drunkcox707 Were you born in Ireland? Were you raised in Ireland?

  • @Drunkcox707 Don't worry there's only one person looking like an ass on here and it's not you. Most of us really like Americans :)

  • Best reel!!

  • is the second tune Ivy leaf ???

In irish music i prefer mandolin but this video just might change my mind .... realy nicely played

  • Nope. 2nd tune is "The High Reel". It's fairly often played with "Ivy Leaf".

Barney still plays both tunes from that recording. I'll be seeing the lads on 16 March. Can't wait!

  • Baaaaaaaaarneeeeyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!

  • Wow, Thanks for posting this!

    Barney does it again! :-)

  • great stuff and you dont play superspeed like a lot of clowns.

  • pinacoladathe5th-

Thank you for sharing your opinion about mandolins and bozoukis. What exactly does this have to do with the banjo you're listening to?

  • 'traditional irish mandolin' always cracks me up, along with the traditional irish bazouki.. ah they make me giggle. (yeah yeah i know they really were re-made etc etc to become irish)

  • The5th- The mandolin and bazouki were picked-up on the shores of the mediterranean by the traditional irish people, who came out of africa about 80,ooo years ago, on their way to the Puck Fair. Barney McKenna was one of them!!!

  • @jimbutler1950 some crac too

  • Awesome! None better.

  • as clear and bright as raindrops in the sunlight. :)

  • the second tune here is "The High Reel"

  • great tune, Brilliant Barney.
