most of the audience should watch more wkf kata. The "hits himself sometimes when he punches to create the snap sound lol!" is his hands and arms moving in the proper motion at such incredible speeds that impact is inevitable, I promise becuase I've done it. the theatrics are called "timing" kata doesnt have to show the audience what the movement really is, but the audience should be able to guess what the application could be. Luca Valdesi was world champion for a reason
From personal experience, those belts are used to differentiate between the two contestants. Both have black belts, but the red and blue are used only in tournaments to make it easier to judge. Hope it helps.
Hi. I just wanted to ask, if somebody knows, what´s the name of the belts that Luca wears(the red one and the blue one) on competitions. I know that´s Adidas but if I want to buy it I need to be more concrete ;-) Can somebody help me with that? Thanks.
Dramatic theater Karate. I wonder if his Kumite sucks. Remember, a real Karate-ka pursues excellence in both Kata AND Kumite, as well as understanding how to apply both in a real situation. Focusing on the excellence of only one facet is an example of poor Karate.
I enjoy watching Valdesi's performance, I like his rythms and I have learnt many of my kata by watching his videos, but I'm not sure how effective his karate would be in a real life situation
I love the way Luca Valdesi's Gankaku looks! He has very good form and balance. His moves snap as fast as the eye can see and his stances are sharp. Why is this form not good? I don't understand why uptight/ traditional practioners look down upon this. In my humble opinion, all forms should look as sharp as this.
@TheNinjaJeremy look up clay morton skif. He is using traditonal timing and is even sharper that valdesi. there is no reason not to uphold traditional values. its like taking a short cut
you mean that's not impressive? I thought speed and control was the goal of fighting arts. That man exerted impressive control and speed. It was not just "flashy" but it seemed well coordinated with lighting speed. I like to see more of this kata thing.
A slight wobble at the end there, but otherwise flawless. Does anyone know if he got the flags here? I know that the smallest wobble in Gankaku is fatal!
To "EatMyBible" easy to tlk like that when ur a thousand miles away and anonymous....so be it. It's not about being a "JKA kid." it's about what is right. Karate wasn't meant to be a show; it wasn't invented for that purpose, but if you're entertained by Luca, have fun hope u learn something from him that helps u in a real fight.
Luca performs the kata in such an impressive way that it turns entertaining to look at, whether you like it or not. If you're a JKA kid, go fuck yourself. JKA is like natives: they refuse to see the modern world as it is and civilize themselves.
@EatMyBible I'm a JKA kid, but I earned my 1st kyu in a non-JKA dojo, prior to joining. I disagree with you on the JKA comment. There are a few JKA reps on the JKF (Japan Team which competes in WKF), both on the kumite and kata teams. As I remember, while practicing in the Philippines in the early nineties (non-JKA), Yuki Mimura (JKA), the WKF champ at the time, did a seminar for the PKF (WKF org in Phil.) and her trademark Unsu was very good! BTW, Lyoto Machida was from JKA, Brazil.
@hiranom20 Whats wrong with Karateka like you? The level WKF brings to the Karate world is impressive. It brings it to such a competitive level. Not only to test you abilities but to see if they can be applied in combat. Sure you may argue "its not full contact..." But you step in the ring with these world class athletes and they would sweep the floor with you in a real fight. Your right Kata is not a show, he is presenting how KATA SHOULD BE PREFORMED WITH FULL SPEED POWER AND KIMAE.
@fuKdaKKKSnNIGGAS Look, Valdesi has speed ; I respect him for that. He has good stances, and generally good technique. Hwever, his showmanship is what annoys me...it's unnecessary because he's gud enuff to win if he did it the way it should be done. His timing is way off thus making the kata longer than it should , plus he hits himself sometimes when he punches to create the snap sound lol! But hey, I'll give cred where it's due cuz he & Aghayev have trained a way tht has exploited WKF rules lol
i agree man, this type of kata just ruins the concept of kata, and is only done to look flashy, but serves no purpose...hate how this way of kata has become accepted as the winning way. whoever does the kata in the most traditional way with the best technique and understanding should win, no who can make it look the "best"
@rinuchi With due respect. Just because Hes fast and sharp and his kicks are high that automatically makes him horrible? Hes Kata is athletic, and if you think for a second its incorrect well it sounds like you have a bitter concept of things. Valdesi knows his stuff and hes knows his Bunkai for all his Katas. He does it with full speed and power THE WAY IT SHOULD BE DONE WHEN PRACTIING or if you imagine fighting multiple opponents. Everyone moves differently, stop hating on someone who is good.
Ótimo Kata, realmente incrível, sou Karateka brasileiro e tenho uma admiração pelos espetaculos que Luka Valdesi faz. Parabéns, você sabe executar muito bem um Kata, tem velocidade, firmeza e vivencia-o.
in Nijushiho there is no yoko geri keagi, but you try telling that to Kanazawa!! Or how about there being no kicks in it like the original Niseishi? Or to put another spin on it... the original version of gankaku was done with a front kick but with time keage became accepted. Or to put ANOTHER spin on it, Yoko= Side, Ke= Kick, Age= Rising, either jodan side kick is technically "rising", therefore whether snap or thrust Valdesi's kicks are technically "KeAge". BUT I do it with a snap kick.
@DonLeone the people forgoten kanazawa sensei and yahara many times participad japanese championship considered best championship in your age and the karate comunity don´t liked, Now the same thing hapening.
@DonLeone I know Kanazawa, Were hosting him in our Dojo this summer! He actaully looks up to Valdesi and respects him as Karateka. Your an idiot. Sensei kanazawa is a cool guy and posting your traditional bullshit is annoying. Sure he is traditional but he understands Karate will change and he is happy it continues. Were under him in SKIF. The WKF is awesome, Kanazawa is awesome for respecting the man. You need to re check your Budo before insulting Karateka, you might know who you insult.
I don't like his style of competition-karate. the Yoko-Geri is wrong - it must be keage, not kekomi. And he punshes the Oi-Zuki in Jodan-height, which is also wrong. Sorry Luca, you didn't understand the kata
thats true. its supposted to be keage. but it is sport karate... it has to look dynamic and more acrobatic. thats why he probably changed it. still great kata though i would have liked a more traditional version of it with less showeffects...
@DonLeone Please tell me this post was a joke right? If your so great show your greatness in this Kata which is one of the hardest Katas to accomplish at this level. People like you that claim your Karateka are hyprocrits and are always downing those who accomplish great things. Go critique someone on YOUR LEVEL. haha.
I don't know where u train karate, but in germany under Hideo Ochi-Sensei, we practise traditional jka karate-do. Just try to compare valdesis katas with katas of japanese masters. U will realize that there's a big difference. Sure he's very fast, but there's no fighting spirit in his eyes and movements! In my opinion he moves like a robot with... valdesis karate is simply "tournament karate" - it looks great, but it's ineffective in reality.
@DonLeone What are you talking about? Everyone will practice Kata differently and naturally if Karate will be practiced all over the world differently due to each instructor. Just because the man is not Japanese makes him a bad Karateka? So it has to be a Japanese person to be effective? YOU POST A VIDEO OF YOURSELF THEN. Everyone moves differently period. I was trained by Japanese instructors and who were originally JKA, AAU, SKIF. Valdesi moves athletic and fast, strong the way is should be.
@shotojojo1986 I didn't say his karate is bad, because he's not japanese. but in my opinion his karate style tends heavily into competition karate which means:
- unneccessary breathing noises - in order to create a "cool" and fiting sound, that depicts the kata
- theatric running-in, bowing und very slow moving before starting kata
- fast but incomplete techniques
....
in my opinion his kata is more show than fighting...
This is an amazing performance! And dynamic21 shito-ryu can look sloppy. Anywat both forms of karate were influenced by each other, so in denouncing shotokan means yuo are denouncing yur own artform-loser!
@dynamic21 whaaaa you wish, with your short choppy movements. lol. (just so you know its a joke between the two styles, shotokan is big and heavy while shitoryu is choppy and too short...) Shotokan still rocks.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
What kind of competition is this anyway?!? where judges can't even distinguish between kiage (which is the REQUIRED technique) and kekomi (which is what he is doing... -badly, might I add, since he never retrieves his kicking leg fast enough). World champion my arse!!! Valdesi: you are rubbish!
